Anyone know if they have more than just the EP "Heads UP"? I can't seem to find anything on AMG.

I know they're playing here in like a week and a bit.

Are they any good?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 15:07 (twenty years ago) link

I know I enjoy them. Highlight tracks: "Death Womb" and "Do It"

my crappy ancient computer can't load their webpage, what can you tell me about them?

dfa is a jesse f. keeler production. he used to be in pickering, ontario's most famous bands -- standing 8 and blackcat#13 with mark and lindsay who are now in the sick lipstick. femme fatale is jfk's other project. dfa/ff/tsl are all based in toronto now.

Is it ok if the water balloons say "Happy Birthday" on them?

Hmmm. Well, it would be better if they said something like "Death from above"...

three months pass...
Good lord, but "Dead Womb" rocks my world. They don't have anything to do with DFA (the production team behind "Losing My Edge", etc.) who acronymize the same moniker?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 18:06 (twenty years ago) link

seven months pass...
They just changed their name because of DFA; they're now known as Death From Above 1979. I'm actually off to check them out now...

alex in montreal, Saturday, 21 August 2004 00:38 (nineteen years ago) link

They fuckin' rock.

OMG... I just heard Death From Above 1979's "Little Girl" from "You're a Woman, I'm a Machine". Best conservative-metal geetar riffing in years!

"Romantic Rights" is awesome.

abegrand, Wednesday, 29 September 2004 09:09 (nineteen years ago) link

What's the album like overall? We don't get it until about February over here

more ripping-off of bass blues-funk riffs?
it's like rage against the machine all over again.
not that i have any objections (i'm too busy rockin')

Did the DFA sue noisey Candian duo Death from Above?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 12 November 2004 01:40 (nineteen years ago) link

twelve years pass...

asking here because of the number of music writers on this site -
why is there not one story calling out DFA on their alt right connections? all i see are puff pieces on the new album. what gives?

bump

sleeve, Wednesday, 18 October 2017 16:21 (six years ago) link

I'd wager it's because

1. No one really cares about them anymore
2. No one left who cares is even remotely surprised

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 18 October 2017 16:22 (six years ago) link

What are the connections? I don't think I even know what this band sounds like - guitars? - but I think all I've seen is one picture of one (masked?) dude from this group hanging with a bunch of alleged assholes in a bar. Is there more?

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 18 October 2017 16:23 (six years ago) link

ironically, no lead guitar at all

dreadful band

imago, Wednesday, 18 October 2017 16:27 (six years ago) link

noisey has run two articles on them in the last two weeks

so much for doing the work and fighting like fuck

the late great, Wednesday, 18 October 2017 17:13 (six years ago) link

Does this mean we should no longer make love and listen to Death From Above?

how's life, Wednesday, 18 October 2017 17:20 (six years ago) link

the dude is on Gavin's show all the time and Gavin has claimed JK as a Proud Boy. cmon do better, music writers.

kurt schwitterz, Wednesday, 18 October 2017 17:30 (six years ago) link

What the fuck is a Proud Boy?

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 18 October 2017 17:40 (six years ago) link

let me google that for you

kurt schwitterz, Wednesday, 18 October 2017 17:43 (six years ago) link

I think that name is super, super dumb because it sounds so much like a regional name for a sandwich (hoagie, hero, sub, proud boy, grinder, etc)

Marcus Hiles Remains Steadfast About Planting Trees.jpg (DJP), Wednesday, 18 October 2017 17:45 (six years ago) link

I like that it's diminuitive, they should go all the way and change it to Little Proud Boys

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 18 October 2017 17:46 (six years ago) link

ya but like it's supposed to be "silly and jokey" which is like one of their main defenses

kurt schwitterz, Wednesday, 18 October 2017 17:47 (six years ago) link

If I have to google what a Proud Boy is (I don't know what it is) because JK (I don't know who that is, but I assume a DFA guy?) is a friend of Gavin (I think I know who that is?) to learn whether a dude from a band I don't think I've ever heard is some alt-right asshole, I'm not sure it's worth a story for the general public. But maybe?

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 18 October 2017 17:48 (six years ago) link

chaki's point is that they are in the middle of a PR push so there are already stories being written about them. none of which mention the alt-right connection.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 18 October 2017 17:49 (six years ago) link

Aha. Yeah, that's weird. Does the band affiliate alt-right, or just this one guy?

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 18 October 2017 17:50 (six years ago) link

who... cares?

"the fgti incident?" (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 18 October 2017 17:51 (six years ago) link

Josh -not trying to get down on you, but also not trying to hold your hand on this stuff either. Proud Boys have been in the news a lot lately.

This is a good start: https://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/626/white-haze

kurt schwitterz, Wednesday, 18 October 2017 17:51 (six years ago) link

Whiney I care that indie rock media gives a pass to Gavin and his buddies. Aren't you the one always clowning on Noisey and talking shit on people giving a pass to Terry Richardson? What's the diff?

kurt schwitterz, Wednesday, 18 October 2017 17:53 (six years ago) link

Does the band affiliate alt-right, or just this one guy?

half the band, ie one guy, does

other half guilty by association imo

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 18 October 2017 17:53 (six years ago) link

Like you just gave shit to John Maus for being on MDE in the AP thread.. if THAT get's a story why wouldn't this popular band person being associated with the pbs get a story

kurt schwitterz, Wednesday, 18 October 2017 17:54 (six years ago) link

hoping that Whiney was responding to Josh there

sleeve, Wednesday, 18 October 2017 17:56 (six years ago) link

I assume he meant "who cares if it is the band or one guy," per my comment.

Googled "Proud Boys," what a bunch of stupid dickholes, but yeah, not ringing a bell. Weird.

Hadn't heard of the Proud Boys until some people I know from the vintage scooter (and associated mod/soul) scene started complaining that the group had adopted a particular Fred Perry shirt as their uniform.

brimstead, Wednesday, 18 October 2017 18:37 (six years ago) link

I didn't know that Kurt Schwitterz posted here, in fact over a week before he published the Medium article.

I post on Ned Raggett's Facebook page alerted me to the story. I was supposed to review the DFA show in Philly the same day that Keller wrote his not particularly contrite mea culpa.

I didn't review the show. I did, however, explain why I didn't.

I do want to thank Kurt and Ned for signal boosting this (I believe that's what the kids call it). It reminded me that even us lowly internet bloggers and writers of music can at least try and do better.

Huge respect to you for your piece. And that’s fine and good except that it’s not good enough for me - I 100% agree with this. His statement was BS and absolves him of nothing.

akm, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 12:59 (six years ago) link

oh I found it. so you buy that apology? do we really excuse this because the guy is an idiot?

akm, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 13:11 (six years ago) link

here's one webpage that will give you all the evidence you need to say fuck this moron and his shitty excuse forever
https://www.compoundmedia.com/shows/the-gavin-mcinnes-show-133/5718dfe9fde84536fd013f57/

the only reason he's 'apologised' is that he doesn't want to lose the income from his shitty bands shows

I don't buy the apology nor do I think it's good enough.

SUMMARY
Today on TGMS, Gavin covers the Muslim takeover of Britain, but first, Bobby Henline and Gavin rate the top 10 hottest chicks. Jesse Keeler tells Gavin how Britain is losing it's identity. Tommy Robinson describes his recent problems with Muslims in his hometown of Luton. Jack Buckby ends the show giving an overall view of Muslim's effect on Britain.
