Went to a big estate sale today. The guy was a big music/broadway/movie buff and his house was absolutely filled to the brim with his collection. One room was just lps, 45s and stereo equipment, including three working jukeboxes. The records weren't super cheap, but among the bargains I did take home were:

4 late 70s issues of Circus for a buck apiece.
2 issues of Creem (Nov. 75 & Jan. 76) ''.
2 issues of Discotheque ''.
1 sealed copy of ABBA: Thank You For The Music on cd for a tenner.

Never got anything for a buck, but I got Royal Trux's Thank You for $2 and Carl Craig's Onsumothasheeit for $3 from seperate shops

I think I payed 60p for Irmin Scmidt's Filmusik 3lp set without a cover way way back. There was some great stuff in that shop, sounds Familiar on Wood st Walthamstow. I bought hundreds in there and would normally go through every rack right to the back. some great great stuff found in the Miscellaneous section, especially Greek film music (that I didn't get to replace once lost until finding bits of it on Demonoid last year).
& I think most of that was between 1quid & 3.

The best under-$1 purchase ever has to be that guy in New York who paid 75 cents at a yard sale for an item he found buried in a box of LPs - a 1966 acetate of an early version of The Velvet Underground and Nico, the only one known to still exist! It included three songs that were entirely different recordings than the official release, and the rest were alternate mixes - all previously believed to be lost. After making an archival recording of it, he auctioned it off on eBay - for over $25,000!

A bargain at twice the price (or more).

$2, total, at an Austin garage sale today for 40 78-RPM records -- mostly looks like square dance music on local Texas labels like Blue Star and Longhorn, but one is Red Foley "Milk Bucket Boogie"/"Salty Dog Rag" on Decca; another (sadly slightly chipped -- the only one I've seen that is) is unfortunately named Western Swing guy Adolph Hofner and the San Antonians "Cotton Eyed Joe"/"Put Your Little Foot" on Columbia. There's also a "Cotton Pickin' Polka" by Lester Woytek, and at least one other version of "Cotton Eyed Joe." There seem to be a few each by the Sundowners and by Red Warrick, whoever they are. Also included in the box were file dividers for all the records, and -- weirder -- lots and lots of lyric (square dance call) sheets and/or dance instructions for individual songs, some of which look like they were officially issued by the record companies with the records, but others of which are either typed out or written out longhand. Also, an 80-page pamphlet/mini-book called It's Fun To Square Dance: Six Easy Lessons By Louie Ratliff, one Elks Club card, and two cards apparently allowing dancers free "goofs". All for $2.

Now all I need is to get a 78 needle.

But maybe I'm wrong about that (or maybe they kept you longer than you'd expected?) Anyway, if the you-know-what is what I think, you're actually mentioned in the intro to the first chapter.

The Adams BDP LP has two naked women on the back, with appropriate body parts hidden behind musical instruments. Totally remember seeing it at the time, but I have no idea whether I ever owned a copy then (presumably as a record company promo), much less listened to it.

Yes way. Anyway, just figured out via googling that the one album I got isn't by the Sequence Angie B (aka Stone), but by B Angie B who recorded with Hammer's girl-rap group Oaktown 3-5-7. Even more confusing, the name of the first song is "I Am Angie B"! And the actual label on the record says the LP title is Bust It, but those words are nowhere on the cover or spine.

Lots of corny biography written just as they were breaking big. Probably the Uriah Heep album I've played the most ever since it clocked a lot of mileage on the turntable when I was a kid. Good version of "Gypsy" -- long sledgehammering, idiotically funny lyrics about being whipped by girlfriend's gypsy dad and getting strong enough to fight and win, too short version of "Love Machine," hilarious sock-hop rock and roll medley.
