I'd say 80% classic, maybe a bit more. Some duff tracks on the early albums but the last 2-3 are fantastic prog-new wave goodness. Any other fans?

is there a particular reason that this 1977 single has not appeared on any BBD reissues or compilations? I wondered if Nelson thought the orientalism sounded a bit dubious nowadays, or was embarrassed that it's so obviously inspired by YMO? I like it though, sounds a bit like Tin Drum era Japan, but 4 years earlier

'not appeared on any BBD reissues or compilations'- aside from that 1981 singles comp directly above, but I don't think is has been on any of the numerous comps and reissues since then

It's on the excellent everrything-they-did box set "Futurist Manifesto" which came out a few years ago. I had a single disc best-of for years but I got that box for cheap and hearing everything in context really opened my ears!

don't care if it's the RADIO FRIENDLY UNIT SHIFTERâ„¢, i'm planting my flag: "ships in the night" is an essential classic and absolutely stunning jam.

I like it, but the synth bass doubling the bass guitar is kind of corny, and the sax solo has always sounded out of tune to me.

kind of corny
indeed (raisy eyebrows)

the sax solo is my favourite bit, I always assumed it was intentionally out of tune
