Diana Ross - 'Diana'

Specifically, the recent reissue, with Chic's original mix running straight after the regularly-released remix. I don't think Chic's mix brings much to the table, and that, indeed, Russ Terrana's remix shapes something charming and vivid from the raw materials. Interesting that Niles Rodgers seemingly doesn't harbour much in the way of bitterness or regret about the project. Really loved the 10 minute 'Love Hangover', too...

Any other responses?

the mega-mix of baby love/stop !/you keep me hanging on/ etc
is a bit much, mainly because it sounds all mid-late 70's and ridiculous but also because jeez those holland-dozier-holland songs were meant 2 b heard one after another *in full* not just the choruses !

personally i thought that the 'upside down' that was chic's was better than the released one, but i dont think there's a lot in it
to be fair. what a great idea it is to have put all those disco-ish b sides and 12s on the 2nd disc.
'your love is so good for me' is ace !!

when i went into HMV manchester to buy it, after it had been out for just 4 days, they had sold out of all their copies.
the bloke said 'we've had loads of people in asking for it'. fantastic.

Diva Diana will be under the impression that the big sales are mainly because of her. But, in reality, CHIC was the shit.

Can't wait to hear this CD,bought the original LP when it came out in'80.Also wish they'd re-release the rare CHIC produced Sheila B Devotion LP 'King of the World'.

yes, the second CD of rare trax and extended single mixes is absolutely fantastic. This is based on one listen on a listening post in HMV. Not heard first disc yet.

i also NEED that deluxe ed. of donna summer's 'Bad Girls' if only (again) for the second disc of 12" mixes.

£19.99 is a bit steep tho' for both of these - anyone in the UK seen them (in a shop I mean, not online) for less?

not much beyond classified ads posted by mail order record stores in the back of the latest Mojo - anyone have any further details?

Got the following from fleetwoodmac-uk.com:

Hot on the heel of their latest albums for years comes a dusting off and expanding of the 'Rumours' - era Fleetwood Mac back-catalogue. Both 'Rumours' and 'Tusk' are remastered and expanded to two-disc sets with loads of unreleased for £12.99 (approx), while The 'Fleetwood Mac' album gets the same treatment over one CD for £8.99. Meanwhile the 'Buckingham Nicks' album is set for its first release on CD, again remastered and expanded, this time for £11.99.More news on the bonus tracks when we get it.

They're on Rhino (yay!) and the release date is listed as September 8th, so the schedule seems to have slipped unfortunately.

Still, great news.

The Chic mix does indeed sound more like a Chic album w/ Diana on vocals, and I do like the Motown version better for most tracks (Russ Terrana did amazing things with the first minute of "I'm Coming Out"). But fascinating. And the 12"s are fab.

i actually don't know the difference between mixes, &c, but the first minute of this is such a teasing triumph, and the moment it kicks in as satisfying as most anything

This album might just be my favourite thing that Chic were ever involved with, which is quite something given that their original mixes weren't used. Talking strictly in terms of material, though, I think this is far more consistent than any Chic album, and I love those Chic records as much as anyone.

I was in B & Q the other day and a song was playing and I had to Shazam it and it was "I'm Coming Out".

Even though I know 'Upside Down' from the same record I'd never heard this! The only other possibility is that I had heard it previously but that it didn't register but that doesn't seem likely either

It is pure gold

I've been teaching myself to play bass again (something I had put down for a long time) and spent this weekend playing along to Upside Down as much as I could.

I'm Coming Out is probably my favorite Nile Rodgers guitar riff.

The whole album is solid.

I think we have found ILM’s youngest poster (who’s also not gay, probably?)

saer, you must have heard Biggie’s “Mo Money Mo Problems” at least, no?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUhRKVIjJtw

I didn't make the connection on the sample with the biggie track, I'm also ambivalent about the biggie track, good video though. The sample is weird because its central but also not central at all

Maybe I just forgot it. I'll listen to another song from the album next week. I already know Upside Down

saer, Monday, 13 March 2023 16:04 (one year ago) link

“My Old Piano” and “Tenderness” are big jams as well

I will play My Old Piano next week and Tenderness in April

saer, Monday, 13 March 2023 16:46 (one year ago) link

and then you can listen to “Love Hangover” all summer long
