Okay...what sounds like Slum Village's "Fall in Love"?

I need to know NOW. Don't just suggest Jay-Dee productions in general. I want something with EXACTLY THE SAME FEEL. I'm desperate!

504 boyz - tight whips

I too want to find one like "Fall In Love." I don't know, Jay Dee is Jay Dee. I like "Jealousy" a lot too.

I find Peven Everett, especially "Testin' Me" is pretty good--but I want more!

504 boyz...not at all. "tight whips" sounds like a crappy Jamaican radio commercial.

amerie - got to be there

It's need to be a little more rough than that...

Well, Premo used those drums on Moment of Truth, and PUTS used the melody sample (others too, I think), but that's not what you're after is it?
Some of the stuff on Fat Jon's 'Wave Motion' instrumental LP sounds similar.

oops (Oops), Saturday, 20 September 2003 02:19 (twenty years ago) link

You're talking about the Gap Mangione sample when you say the melody, right?

cybele (cybele), Saturday, 20 September 2003 02:38 (twenty years ago) link

the-breaks.com tells me that yes, yes I am.

oops (Oops), Saturday, 20 September 2003 02:44 (twenty years ago) link

Have you heard the JRocc vs. JayLib 30min mix on the Stones Throw site? He mixes the Mangione with the Slum Village track. (I mentioned this mix in my "This is some of the best shit I;ve heard in a long time" thread.)

cybele (cybele), Saturday, 20 September 2003 02:49 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, I saw that thread and was tortured by it--I have dial-up and a 30 min mix will take forever to download.
But, I guess I'll just leave my computer on to download it while I go out. What's the link?

oops (Oops), Saturday, 20 September 2003 02:57 (twenty years ago) link

mary j blige ft grand puba - what's the 411? (remix)
(& grand puba - very special)
dudley perkins - flowers

minna (minna), Saturday, 20 September 2003 03:10 (twenty years ago) link

oops, that blige song is not the remix, just the original

minna (minna), Saturday, 20 September 2003 03:15 (twenty years ago) link

Not to be picky, but isn't it Puba ft Mary? It's on Puba's album anyway. (btw, Puba is the smoothest rapper ever)

oops (Oops), Saturday, 20 September 2003 03:21 (twenty years ago) link

it's on mary's album too!
here:

mary j blige/grand puba - what's the 411?

better!

"tight whips" sounds like a crappy Jamaican radio commercial.
haha!

minna (minna), Saturday, 20 September 2003 03:35 (twenty years ago) link

what part of the track is it that you're after? the singing? the spacey production (all that panning and filtering)?

Have you heard the J88 album? or the Fantastic Vol 1? (i don't have the latter). there's a track on the j88 album called "The Look of love Part 1" that's kinda similar.

check my Jay Dee thread. there might be some other shit on you haven't heard that you may like?

ps. the mangione album was just reissued. i'm bout to get it. check dustygroove.com

JasonD (JasonD), Saturday, 20 September 2003 03:48 (twenty years ago) link

i just listened to them again and i want to relegate 'what's the 411' to brackets, 'very special' is closer i think

minna (minna), Saturday, 20 September 2003 03:53 (twenty years ago) link

oops, what song did PUTS use that sample for?

JasonD (JasonD), Saturday, 20 September 2003 03:59 (twenty years ago) link

(btw, Puba is the smoothest rapper ever)

what a dork!

It's on the 'hidden' track at the end of whatever the second album is, where they're just giving shout outs and thank yous. I like the beat a lot--maybe it was just too chilled out for them to try to rap over.
I was trying to think of a PUTS track to recommend that's similar to "Fall in Love", but one doesn't stand out. Still, you'd might like that album, cybele.

oops (Oops), Saturday, 20 September 2003 06:07 (twenty years ago) link

that mix isn't downloading for me dammit!

oops (Oops), Saturday, 20 September 2003 07:21 (twenty years ago) link

Jason--I think what I'm looking for is the combination of the singing and the panning and filtering. The lyrics aren't standout by any means, nor is the delivery. It's as if the whole song exists outside of the MC. Does this make sense? That J88 track is sorta similar. I like YNQ for the same reasons, but Madlib sometimes tires me out.

cybele (cybele), Saturday, 20 September 2003 14:13 (twenty years ago) link

obv. Dwele's "Angel" is a lot like this

JasonD (JasonD), Saturday, 20 September 2003 17:50 (twenty years ago) link

but i knew you already had this

check the Spacek stuff if you haven't already. English electronic take on jay dee smooth samples and hard beats. very heady. my only problem with the group is the singers weird accent. it's just so proper.

JasonD (JasonD), Saturday, 20 September 2003 17:52 (twenty years ago) link

Hey...do you know where to get the track at the end of BBC Radio 1's Philly special? It's called "Braid your hair." I want it!!

cybele (cybele), Saturday, 20 September 2003 19:28 (twenty years ago) link

Oh--I've liked all the Spacek I've heard, but it's too electronic-y to match with "Fall in Love." Am I being too picky?

cybele (cybele), Saturday, 20 September 2003 22:02 (twenty years ago) link

do you have the jazzy jeff BBE album "The Magnificent". it really is as it's title claims. there are many songs on the album that are very much like this slum song. there's even a great one w/Shaun from Boyz II Men (?!). and i forget what the J-Live album sounds like right now, but i think jeff produced a bunch of this?

also, the king of filtered beats (although rhythmically kinda boring) is Pete Rock. i'm not the hugest CL Smooth fan, and if you're not either, check out I.N.I.'s album. very good album and tons of filtered, trippy beats. he's not as smooth an mc as slum (and there's hardly any singing on it). if you're looking for something w/o any mcs Pete also has that Petestrumentals album on BBE that's prettty good.

JasonD (JasonD), Sunday, 21 September 2003 18:22 (twenty years ago) link

I second the INI recommendation. I wouldn't go as far as to say it's a 'lost classic' like some do, but it's still purdy good.
Petestrumentals is a bit boring but worth hearing.

oops (Oops), Sunday, 21 September 2003 21:32 (twenty years ago) link

i bought Petestrumentals after falling in love with 'Welcome to Detroit', thinking it was gonna be more of the same and was very unenthused after i first heard it. i sold it, but burned it before i did. it wasn't until recently that i got a copy of Reason and started making music that i really learned to appreciate it.
