Picked up his disc of Ragas on Ocora last week and really enjoying it. In the liner notes it also says that he has played in soundtracks and has composed too. Anyone heard any of that? Any other raga discs that are worth a mention?

Is that the "Ragas" one with Ali Akbar Khan on it too?
Pick up Sounds of India too for a good intrduction with Ravi speaking between tracks about Ragas.

my CD is called 'Pandit Ravi shankar' with Kumar Bose on tabla. It was recorded in 1986.

I have that one, Julio. Another you should check out is Three Ragas. The 28-min performance of Raga Jog is really dazzling, probably among my favourite ICM performances of all time. I also have Raga from Music Today (Living Media, 1995). I've found that to be very satisfying, to have a lot of 'depth' to it. I really haven't cared for the collaborations with Phil Glass or the thing with the Russian orchestra or things like that,.

yeah I'm vary of that stuff with glass and orchestras and i wanted to see if anyone was going to say anything good abt it. I'd quite like to hear any soundtracks he did.

There is one collaberation of Ustad Nishat Khan - sitar and Ensemble Gilles Binchois - gregorian voices called "Meeting of Angels" that I really like a lot, but I was never impressed with many of the other Indian classical fusions I've heard.

I just put on Shivkumar Sharma- Raa Misra Tilang, and I recall how much I love this. It's not sitar, but dulcimer and Zakir Hussains drumming is so interesting. The two players are playing rhythmic patterns that seem totally random yet they are right together. It's just getting faster and more complex, and the melodies are beautiful too. I highly recommend this if you would like to hear some dulcimer instead of sitar rags.

Sharma is a santur player, right? Is that the dulcimer you're referring to or is he playing a different instrument? (Not saying you're wrong - a santur is a hammered dulcimer - just making sure.) That instrument has a really pretty sound. There's a nice album of him with Hariprasad Chaurasiya on flute.

Yeah, it's a santur then I think. The sound is great, and it's percussive too, so that he can play it incredibly fast.

I have a Ravi Shankar soundtrack LP from the film "Chappaqua". Winner of the 1966 Venice Silver Lion prize, "Chappaqua" is a film directed by Conrad Rooks, and starring Jean Louis Barrault, William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Paula Pritchett, Swami Satchidananda and Ornette Coleman. Despite this being a Columbia Masterworks release, I could find no entry for it on AMG. Like the other several Shankar records I have, it's good.

one month passes...

I'm thinking of picking up some South Asian music for the first time, but I am a complete ignoramus.

I like that funky, trippy flow that keeps going and going with a fast rhythm. Also, I like that high-pitched, spastic vocal style with constant dips and rises.

Does this sound like Raga? What about Bhangra or Qawwali?

six months pass...

Yesterday evening I saw Shubhendra Rao (sitar) and Saskia Rao de Haas(violoncello) performing some ragas as well as some self-composed 'nu-raga' (sorry 'bout the term, it was new material, raga-style with greek as well as classical influences) stuff. They were supported by a tabla player whose name I don't remember. Anyway, Shubhendra is an amazing sitar player, apparently he was trained by Ravi Shankar. This being my first encounter with more traditional sitar works, I will definately check some of the above recommendations out.
So, my contribution for this thread would be: try and check out some Shubhendra stuff! :)

Duet is def. classic. There's a 2 disc set of Ali Akbar Khan stuff called "Then And Now: The Music of the Master Continues" that's fab. I'd also recommend "Tradional Music of India," but that's sort of self-explanatory.

Additionally, look for Imrat Khan. "Rag Madhur Ranjani" is my favorite, very sparse and beautiful, but pretty much anything you can find by him is worth getting.

LP 2829 Two raga moods. Ravi Shankar; Kanai Dutt, tabla; Gopi Mohan and Nirem Roy, tanpura. Capitol ST 10482. 1967

I picked this up from a used record store for about a buck. It's excellent. Two side-long ragas. The mood is kind of peaceful and meditative at first but with peaks of feeling and energy. Phenomenal musicianship.

Just received in the post the Collaborations box set put together by George Harrison's widow, Olivia.

It's an incredibly lavish limited edition set ( i have 02866) of Ravi Shankar's music with a good 55 page hardback book with great photos, 3 CDs and 1 DVD of a 1974 concert in London. The CDs have replica format original vinyl sleeve artwork, and notes. The general impression is that no expense has been spared putting this together - and incredibly well done.

i don't know too much beyond an "essential" comp and that Shankar Family & Friends thing he did w/ Harrison in the 70s. Kind of a flawed record, but enjoyable. Is that the only time he really attempted a pop crossover?

Just cued up his recent Symphony (for traditional western orchestra with sitar soloist) which was released by the London Philharmonic Orchestra on their own label this year. It's on Spotify but under the conductor's name; just search 'Shankar symphony and you'll see it. Anouschka Shankar is the soloist.

It's really gorgeous! Will probably buy this. FYI anouschka enters the fray at about 5 minutes into the first movement.
