Ecosongs

In 1989 the ecosong was so prevalent it got its own genre. It was called - The Ecosong.

Why did this happen at this time? Why did it so short-livedly stop? Are those questions too obvious? What ecosongs do you remember? Does anyone have a clue what I'm on about?

I once called "Chorus" by Erasure" 'eco-pop,' though I had no idea it was part of a genre. I can't think of any others off hand, maybe a U2 song or something.

'Chorus'? How does that go? when is it from?

ACtually, maybe it's a little late for the genre--it came out in '91. I think it's their best song, and it's the one that goes:

"And they covered up the sun
Until the birds had flown away
And the fishes in the sea
Had gone to sleep"

I still like Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology) best but as that's from 1971 I guess it doesn't count. Err.. when was Robert Palmer's cover version?

Isn't there a 5CD box-set of versions of "Big Yellow Taxi"?

was tanita takram part of this? her first album stares at me from the downtown goodwill every time i visit but i haven't yet bothered to even check the lyrics and session info on it to see if it might be in some tiny way interesting.

two years pass...
I think that the reference to 'the hole in the sky' in The House of Love's 'Marble' is a topical reference to the ozone layer.

Simple Minds' 1989 LP *Street Fighting Years* was part of this movement, I think.
