Thoughts are welcome. Meirion, Ned, possibly others (Dr. C?) to thread.

The Fall, Jr., Welsh Division. hard to believe this band evolved into the Furries (er, sorta). the Wyau/Pyst CD has its moments. nothing that Swell Maps didn't do better, tho. and much coarser, melodically, than even the earliest SFA. maybe understanding the lyrics adds to the enjoyment. a historical curiosity otherwise.

hmm, crossed my wires there. as someone's bound to point out, Datblygu didn't evolve into SFA. just a big influence on 'em, being one of the first defiantly weird and uncommercial forces in Welsh music. or so is said. Meic Stevens, anyone?!

did they do that 'casserole' song? cos thats good.

joni, Wednesday, 16 July 2003 14:54 (twenty years ago) link

"Casserole Efeilliaid" - thanks for reminding me.

Most of the lyrics I've been able to make out seem awkward (though "Casserole" and the song later covered by SFA were good). I think the music is better and stranger overall than the words. The delivery is obviously stolen from the Fall, but I'm not sure about other aspects of the music, not having heard any Fall songs contemporary to Datblygu.

My thoughts on them. Or at least that one comp CD.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:53 (twenty years ago) link

worth dipping into. the fall comparisons are unhelpful [though accurate]: the fall are about one of a kind lyrics, amazing over the top delivery, totally hot sounding group, etc; this stuff is plodding synth goth with the incomprehensi vox, thus i think the appeal draws closer to the cocteaus.

Some quite transparent Joy Division moments on the comp as well (can't recall the titles I'm afraid, and don't know what they mean anyway). The frontman, David R. Edwards, is regarded as a towering lyrical genius by many round these parts. He was abrasive and obnoxious, and had a drink problem, so this figures I suppose. He had this bizarre thing going on, which he returned to in quite a few songs, about AIDS being this huge lie on the part of world government or the WHO or whoever. There are sleevenotes on the back of the Peel Sessions album they did, tho you'll probably have to rely on second-hand shops to find that.

My housemate is in the process of tracking him down for an interview I think. Christ knows what he's doing these days, but a very interesting character all the same.

David is no longer with us. He was one of the best friends you could ever have. A huge, generous personality, a bear of a man; his legacy will live on.

Sounding a bit like The Fall to me, and I mean that in the best possible way.
