20 years ago I wouldn't have believed I would see MBV live, but I did last night. I'm a pretty happy guy today.

Seeing MBV in Glasgow back in 2008, there were lots of tough people down the front without plugs, all "yaaaaah bring it on yah noisy cunts i'm a mad hard bastard"

LOL

MBV hooligan front

Master of Treacle, Friday, 8 November 2013 13:17 (ten years ago) link

Yes they cost a little, but imagine not being able to listen to music when you are older?

What's more: if ear damage were limited to hearing loss that would be one thing...problem is the lack of input tends to get compensated for by non-stop high-frequency ringing (i.e., tinnitus). Seriously, not fun. Sorry to be a party-pooper, but it's my duty as one of the resident geezers to warn all you kids.

I thought the earplugs and warning signs plastered around the venue were hype until the genocide volcano part of YMMR.

my ears feel strong and resilient. i think i will be fine on saturday.

Treeship, Friday, 8 November 2013 18:52 (ten years ago) link

I had some hifi earplugs, but I lost one of them about 3/4 of the way through the show and used one of the foam ones provided at the venue.

Sound quality was much better w/ the fancy ones, but the huge difference was in hearing loss. Afterward, the ear w/ the cheap foam plug sounded muffled and I kept trying to make it pop. The other ear was pretty much normal.

be sure to say to yourself "i'm invincible!" on your way into the venue

i think i will actually wear hearing aids to the concert. crank the volume up a little bit.

Took my earplugs out for about a minute during YMMR and it was absolutely unbearable.

I've had tinnitus since I was 21 and for a while it provoked almost panic attack-level anxiety. I had read an interview with Pete Townshend where he said that tinnitus "made him want to kill himself" and I imagined a progressively worsening high-pitched wine that would eventually block out all other sounds and make sleep impossible. Really, it's pretty much fine. It's just like having a TV tuned to nothing on in the background wherever you go. It just sounds like electronics or AC power and really, when are we not surrounded by these things anyway? Alcohol worsens the effects of tinnitus, but also knocks you out before the tinnitus can keep you awake, so it kind of doesn't matter.

I'm not sure I was so bothered by the loudness of MBV. I think my ears have already pretty much ruled out any of the frequencies being played.

fields of salmon, Friday, 8 November 2013 20:08 (ten years ago) link

Really, it's pretty much fine.

YMMV to the extreme when it comes to this disorder, as other threads on ilx will attest.

Linda Darmstadt (Jon Lewis), Friday, 8 November 2013 20:23 (ten years ago) link

can you get tinnitus from one mbv concert? how often do you need to be exposed to extremely loud noises to get this?

tɹi.ʃɪp (Treeship), Friday, 8 November 2013 20:25 (ten years ago) link

is it the "ultimate souvenir"?

tɹi.ʃɪp (Treeship), Friday, 8 November 2013 20:25 (ten years ago) link

Tinnitus is not just chronic, it's also the short-term ringing in your ears after loud shows. So yes, you can get it from just 1 show.

disgruntled punter (Je55e), Friday, 8 November 2013 21:17 (ten years ago) link

There are ppl who got it permanently from being near a single gunshot or explosion. Dunno if one concert length exposure could induce a permanent effect or not. It's probably happened.

as a tinnitus sufferer, I do not recommend adopting the "one time won't hurt" attitude

Seeing Curve on the Cuckoo tour was my scared straight moment w.r.t. wearing earplugs. I may not always wear them, but I do take them with me to shows just in case.

cosign. I saw them in 2008(?) in SF at which time I had earplugs & used them intermittently during the show. Sometime during the year following I developed a ringing in my right ear which never went away. I am in an occupation in which loud noises are frequent, so I know it wasn't just due to this one REALLY LOUD SHOW. But seriously, you will like not having permanent damage to your ears. Use adequate ear protection.

those Ety earplugs are what I use and in my opinion they're as good as you can get if you aren't going to have something custom made. they did the job for MBV.

fffv, Saturday, 9 November 2013 19:27 (ten years ago) link

Wow,I saw Curve at least three times, but I don't remember them as remotely unbearable. Nowhere near MBV a couple of years ago.

Most ear ringing shows I've seen otherwise were arena metal. NIN in 94, Metallica in ... 98?

I saw Swans in January at ATP Melbourne - they set up 18 amps on stage and 2 full kits, then laid into them with abandon in huge searing waves of attack. Figured I wouldn't need protection, set was loud and I could feel my clothes flapping a bit but it seemed just-barely-OK. After the set my ears were the most wrecked I've ever experienced, everything around me sounded like a broken radio for half an hour. Scared the hell out of me. Hearing seems relatively normal but I am sure the damage will show up in a few years - won't be taking that risk again.

MatthewK, Saturday, 9 November 2013 22:30 (ten years ago) link

I would not recommend seeing MBV without earplugs and I never wear earplugs (I probably should, but that's my lookout) - the only time I've worn them was when I saw MBV on their 1st reunion tour and I took them out during YMMR for a few seconds and it was ludicrous.

Loudest concert I ever went to in terms of ear-damage was JAMC in 1998 in Reading, it was a pretty small venue and I couldn't hear my own voice afterwards. I were a young lad at the time so I guess it didn't do any permanent damage.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Sunday, 10 November 2013 00:26 (ten years ago) link

when i saw them in nyc in '08 you literally couldn't take the earplugs out, it was amazingly loud.

the other night in boston it was mostly fine, used plugs for maybe 10% of the show.

basically plan on using them, pay attention to your body and ears and how you feel. this isn't that complicated.

These are what I had and they were good - they still changed the sound some, bit far better than regular foam ones.

Like I said above, after I lost one of my ETYs, I replaced it w/ a foam one and that ear definitely showed some damage -- hearing loss and ringing.

disgruntled punter (Je55e), Sunday, 10 November 2013 00:41 (ten years ago) link

I don't get it, if earplugs are an essential precaution when seeing MBV then what's the point of playing so loud? All it does is enable idiots to permanently injure themselves. Or is knowing that you're in the midst of such loud volumes, albeit protected, part of the fun?

jmm, Sunday, 10 November 2013 01:15 (ten years ago) link

Simple answer - loud music hits your body as well as your ears

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Sunday, 10 November 2013 01:20 (ten years ago) link

imo a lot of their guitar tones are sort of contingent on being loud

call all destroyer, Sunday, 10 November 2013 01:23 (ten years ago) link

Most of the show is not, imo, any louder than normal loud shows, but the long, loud bit in the middle of YMMR is meant to overwhelming and to be felt in your body. I loved it and I wished I could it at home.

xps
