new album is dope, guys

Black Sands is really nice, just getting into it.

Nah, it's way subtler and more textured than Morcheeba.

Bit miffed Black Sands never got more recognition on this board. I still play it all the time.

it got in the top 100 last year? i think Bonobo may have gone under the radar cos of their association with the early-2000s chill out scene, at least that's why i didn't get round to checking it at the time.

His new one, Northern Borders, had a sneak release today.

Anyone else been playing it? It doesn't have the cinematic grandeur of Black Sands, and neither does it break any new ground. His style might be suffering from diminishing returns slightly. But there's some lovely stuff here (Emkay, Jets, Know You, Pieces) and it's as beautifully produced as usual.

Playing live within the next couple of weeks in N.America. Any reports/reviews? Anyone know the live set-up for this tour (ie number of musicians, instrumentation, etc.)?

Bumping thread to see if I can get info to convince me to trek over to see him/them live tomorrow.

so he's super popular now, huh? sold out here on a sunday, no mean feat. looks like live drums, vocals, bass, mallets, keys, and horns. i don't know though, seems kinda corny, like sub-cinematic orchestra jazzy hip-hop circa '02. turns out the production is the most interesting part.

i once saw cinematic orch live ..
absolutely brilliant.
despite hating jazz styled grooves, my wife loved it.
was a very special evening.
and for support : bonobo.
albeit as a dj set only, but still very laid back and cool.

Seems like his DJ sets are very different from his live perfs. he is playing here in sf tomorrow and gonna check it out.

his live show is great

New tune "Kerela" sounds pretty but fairly unispired on first listen. Worried he more or less ran out of ideas after Black Sands.

Open to being proven wrong come January though!

New album's nice if unremarkable - He's great live. Really don't recommend anyone watch the video for Kerala as it's literally headache-inducing.

It's nice as background music but nothing really stands out.

A few pretty tunes, but some of it's going a bit EDMish. Seems more and more likely that Black Sands was his peak.

#5 in the Albums chart.

His only other album to chart before was the previous one at #29.

Black Sands and all preceding it never even dented the top 100

I've seen a fair bit of promotion on social media. Plus I feel like his word of mouth popularity has grown a lot in the last couple of years. Seems like everyone you meet likes Bonobo these days.

I was surprised. I'd have put it down to a low sales week but then The Flaming Lips are down at about 37 when you'd have thought fanbase plus low sales would uave seen them much higher. This is the first Bonobo album I've checked out, pleasant enough.

If you enjoy it you should go back to Black Sands and Days to Come, both much better than this imo.
