Bands who picked up where others left off

I have a theory that REM got passed the baton from the Beach Boys the moment they became irrelevant. Different bands altogehter but they're similar in many ways. Love You came out about the same time as REM got together and Murmer came out a couple of years after. Tracks like "Near Wild Heaven" sound exactly like what the Beach Boys should have been doing at that time if they had never gone completely downhill.

What other bands do this? Another one is Ozzy leaving Sabbath coinciding with Manowar's Battle Hymns. Manowar formed backstage at a Sabbath concert.

I don't know about direct connection but I just got into Meanwhile, Back In Communist Russia and they seem to be picking up where Slint left off.

Mick Jagger said of the New York Dolls: "Ugh, the New York Dolls! What Rubbish!" To which Johnny Thunders replied, "Mick who?" The Dolls picked up where the Stones should have gone if they hadn't been such pussies. The Dolls were/are a slap in the face. God love 'em.

Yeah, but don't blame Sabbath for the embarassment that is Manowar. It's not like any of Manowar's albums measure up to even Sabbath's weakest.

Granted, they aren't comparable bands but you can't just throw Manowar away like that! You have obviously never heard "Triumph of Steel".
