Let's hear all about it.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 17:51 (seventeen years ago) link

we sold it in the late 70s.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 17:52 (seventeen years ago) link

I think you spelled it wrong, it should be Filet o' Sole.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 17:56 (seventeen years ago) link

THANKS A LOT BUTTLIP

I'm mainly thinking Search and Destroy here, although I'm curious about how the sweet harmonic Philly stuff gave way to the pre-disco Philadelphia International tracks.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 18:04 (seventeen years ago) link

the new book Boogaloo deals quite a bit with it, I believe.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 18:06 (seventeen years ago) link

(I'm not sure whether the buttlip part was for Jess or Horace, sorry.)

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 18:08 (seventeen years ago) link

I sold my Philly soul box set to Reckless once upon a time. Look for a "TS: Thom Bell vs. Gamble and Huff" thread. I really like the Stylistics. I have to admit a bit of a block when it comes to the later, proto-disco things like the Blue Notes. Also I've never been fond of "Love Train."

I have some stuff I can copy for you, Nabisco, if you're interested.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 18:09 (seventeen years ago) link

I'll take the Buttlip on this, but Jess gets the next one.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 18:15 (seventeen years ago) link

Search:

"I'll Always Love My Mama" - The Intruders
"People Make the World Go Round" - The Stylistics
"Mighty Love" - The Spinners
"Don't Leave Me This Way" - Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes
"Expressway to Your Heart" - Soul Survivors
"La La Means I Love You" - The Delfonics
"I Love Music" - The O'Jays
or you know, all the hits by all those guys or yeah just get the Gamble-Huff box.

Destroy:

the MFSB records.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 18:27 (seventeen years ago) link

my fave philly soul track is the intruders' "slow drag". personal associations.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 18:35 (seventeen years ago) link

I really like MFSB, Mr D!

The O'Jays are the heart and soul of Philly soul, for me, before and through the period of greatest success. The Delfonics are glorious too. Billy Paul's Me And Mrs Jones is a great record.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 03:30 (seventeen years ago) link

Solar is Miami tho, I think.

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 07:05 (seventeen years ago) link

as well as the above-mentioned G&H vs Bell thread, this one had some general chatter about philly soul:

Taking Sides: Motown (The Sound of Detroit) v. Gamble & Huff (The Sound of Philadelphia)

zebedee (zebedee), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 11:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Ween - "Freedom of '76" is the best Philly Soul song ever. Love all the Philadelphia references in the lyrics ("Mannequin was filmed at Woolworth's / Boyz II Men still keepin' up the beat.", etc).

SOLAR = Sound of Los Angeles Records

Confounded (Confounded), Friday, 30 December 2005 11:43 (fifteen years ago) link

SOLAR needs a thread of its own: Shalamar, The Whispers, Lakeside.

back to Philly. I don't think there's a definitive Philly Soul collection. The 3-disc Legacy box from the late 90s is a decent place to start, esp. the first disc which collects various pre-CBS Gamble & Huff singles. The classic hits from 1972-75 are there, also available on 1000 or so budget compilations. But the set stops in 1976 when Philadelphia International Records left the CBS fold. True there was a drop in quality at this point as the high-disco era began but there are a lot of lost Philly classics from the late 70s, from "Ain't No Stopping Us Now" and solo Teddy P onto to more arcane pleasures like Dexter Wansel.

I've got an 8-CD Philadelphia comp than covers the waterfront, a German import from 1989 that was one of the first CDs I bought. On Knight Records if you can find it...

But even that set doesn't include Thom Bell's life-changing work w/The Spinners who recorded for Atlantic. Fuck record companies.

Apparently Gamble & Huff are semi-reclusive and not esp. interested in setting the record straight so to speak. Someday, someway, plz.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Friday, 30 December 2005 12:03 (fifteen years ago) link

This thread needs more Spinners love.

Keith C (lync0), Saturday, 31 December 2005 18:13 (fifteen years ago) link

MFSB = Philadelphia's equivalent of the MGs. Also, how have we not mentioned the Trammps here? A really great band, and makers of a couple of my favourite tunes ever.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 31 December 2005 18:42 (fifteen years ago) link

M. Coleman: about Gamble & Huff being semi-reclusive, there was an excellent history of Gamble-Huff-Bell that came out last year (I think it was), titled A HOUSE ON FIRE. Huff and Bell talked, Gamble kept his trap shut.

This thread needs more Spinners love.

Yes. No one has ever rivaled the batshit over-the-coda vamps of Philippe Wynne. "I'm a contented man!"

Off to go do the rubberband-man dance on my way to the ATM. Happy new year!

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Saturday, 31 December 2005 21:01 (fifteen years ago) link

the Intruders...and yeah, the Spinners, whom I love love love. Phillipe Wynne was about as good as Al Green, and "Pick of the Litter" is a classic album, "Love or Leave" and "All That Glitters" are masterpieces.

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Sunday, 1 January 2006 02:21 (fifteen years ago) link

was reading phillyfuture today and read that there's a documentary in the works about philly music, primarily focused on the 50's through 1970's. lots of interesting interviews/clips here:

Hearing it on the store PA, I impulse bought the More Perfect Harmony: Sweet Soul Groups 1967-1975 comp while I was at Kim's last week. Fun stuff...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 16:27 (fifteen years ago) link

Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes and Teddy P can not be searched hard enough.

Rick Massimo (Rick Massimo), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 19:46 (fifteen years ago) link

for that matter, the great disco book by Phil Shapiro, "Turn the Beat Around," which is a fantastic book, really gets at the Philly-origins of disco, just superb.

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 22:38 (fifteen years ago) link

Not so sure about the Intruders, though: The lead vocalist sounds WAY flat to me, especially on "I'll Always Love My Mama," which is otherwise a marvy record.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 08:41 (fifteen years ago) link

Spinners, man. "I'll Be Around" = my fav soul song of ever

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 08:59 (fifteen years ago) link

soul survivors, "expressway to your heart" = possibly the best song about philadelphia? creating a love song out of the mess that is the schuylkill expressway? utter genius.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 14:28 (fifteen years ago) link

except that unfortunately "donut underpass" did not exist at the time of its writing. if they included that, OMG. ultimate philly song ever. mmmm, donut underpass.

eight months pass...
I've been listening to Universal love by MFSB a lot lately. The eponymous track especially kills me. It's so of its time - reminds me of a TV show theme tune or something - but totally gets away with it by being so awesome.

struttin' with some barbecue (jimnaseum), Friday, 8 September 2006 19:02 (fourteen years ago) link

recently picked up a 12" at a thrift store by a group called Solar Flare. the a side (Boogie Fund) is ho hum disco, but the b side is this amazing mellow Philly Soul track called Don't Play With Fire that i've listened to at least once a day for the past two weeks. guess it was written by Ron Kersey of Salsoul and Tramps fame.
