Daniel Johnston in his Captain America Costume and Donald Duck mask meets Wesley Willis in the rock and roll McDonalds for a FITE!
Or would the ghost of Moondog
Come and kick them in their asses?

No, this thread isn't supposed to make sense.

the only things these artists have in common is that they both suffer from mental illnesses ie. fuck you custos

So do 90% of everybody else.
But which do you enjoy more?
(I mean the musicians...not the mental disorders.)

PS to all the haters: I posted to this thread as a tribute and a serious debate starter, not as a dis against either Johnston or Willis.
(As we speak, I'm listening to the Willis part of the mp3 CD-Rom Nordikskillz sent me. Thats what inspired me.)

I enjoy some of WW's songs with the Fiasco, e.g. "She Loves Me Truly" and "I'm Sorry That I Got Fat." And not for the dubious reasons most of his fans like him.

I much prefer Daniel though. He writes a great melody, and a lot of his lyrics really hit home (when they're not totally rambling and disturbing.)

musicians in being abnormal shockah!

I honestly think you can't even compare Wesley's schizophrenia and Daniel's bipolar disorder. Daniel seems more like yr stereotypical idiosyncratic troubled genius.

Comparatively, Johnston isn't crazy enough. But his music is better.

Hmmmm. Until I hear more Johnston, I'd have to go with Joe Meek. "I Hear a New World" is hypnotic.

Would anyone know who Wesley Willis is if it weren't for people looking for the next Daniel Johnston (in all the wrong places)?
Anyway I go with Daniel because he's a great songwriter and Wesley... isn't.

Well, that and Jesus Rasputin turned out to lack any (musical) talent.

Staying as emotionless as is possible for you feisty punks, can someone explain precisely why it is so reprehensible to find Wesley Willis's songs amusing?

I really can't listen to the first 10 seconds of 'Suck a cheeta's dick' without creasing up, so am I UTTERLY EVIL AND A CUNT AND MY MUM SHOULD JUST GO AND GET RAPED COS I DESERVE NO BETTER (there Jess, beat you to it)?

Wesley is the soul of rock n roll and all fans of the Fall should adore him - adheres strictly to M.E. Smith dictum of "repetition, repetition, repetition"!

I can't listen to much of his stuff for very long, but he makes me smile. And not in a "whoah what a freak!" way but in a "this guy is overflowing with energy and faith" way. Music as therapy = good time for all!

well, with either, it's best to hide the scissors if they're in the room. Don't want them to hurt themselves.

I agree 100%. It's very uplifting to see someone cope that well in the face of one of the most disabling illnesses around.

Daniel Johnston, of course, is one of the best songwriters I've ever seen. I've always thought that he would have been better off sixty or seventy years ago; he could have been just a songwriter and his problems would have been kept out of sight of the media.
