Am I allowed to record a funk version of Liz Phair's "Supernova" with me vocodering the lyrics?

Well, I know that I'm allowed, because fuck, free country, right, I mean shit, as a member of the military I defend my own right to do such, but I guess what I'm really asking is, is it a good idea?

It might work. Give it a try.

Actually, skip the vocoder if you can. I'd recommend singing it straight, but keeping the funk angle.

anything sounds better with a vocoder. do it!

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 22 June 2003 03:16 (twenty years ago) link

You see, the thing is, my voice is totally shitty. Through a lot of compression and, some flanger, and some reverb, I've gotten decent vocal tones, but still, it's not that great. I can hit notes, I can sing in pitch and all, but every time I hear my voice in a recording, I shudder in disgust. It might just be nerve, but I still think that unless I get a real singer to come to my apartment, I should stick with the MS2000 vocoding my voice.

Yeah, like I said, I think Tad has the idea down. I can't sing, man. My natural voice sounds corny.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Sunday, 22 June 2003 03:20 (twenty years ago) link

do it to it.

Why not find someone to sing it who has a nice, good voice that comes at least somewhat close to a decent soul singer?

I think that would be a lot more effective than the vocoder thing. Vocoder on cover songs is definitely played out.

Thanks Matt, I'll put an ad out in the Washington Post.

Maybe my situation is not clear, I'm a dude with a few guitars, basses, a Korg MS2000, a couple of Korg Electribes (the A and S) and a Tascam tape based 4-track. I can't pay a singer. And all of my friend's singing blows.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Sunday, 22 June 2003 03:40 (twenty years ago) link

well, will the vocodered vocals be in a cher stylee or a cylon battlestar galactica one? please let it be the latter.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Sunday, 22 June 2003 13:21 (twenty years ago) link

Well, Helltime - don't you have any friends?

Some folks may not really need to get paid, some people will just do it for, y'know, fun.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 22 June 2003 13:29 (twenty years ago) link

What the hell is my problem - I guess I missed the part where you said your friend's singing sucks. Sorry. Just work up.

Friend's friends? Friend's friend's friends? Total strangers?

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 22 June 2003 13:30 (twenty years ago) link

I'll do it! Note: I cannot sing.
