Classic! Tremendous guitar-fueled psychedelia. Later releases have had a disturbing techno edge, however. Haven't heard the latest one. I didn't keep the one before that.

Other Way Out and Acid Yantra are excellent examples of
old-school psych rock--nothing innovative, but
it's executed with so much passion and skill (and
effects pedals) it doesn't matter. There's an EP called Overspill with a killer cover of George Harrison's "Only A Northern Song," too.
Beggars Banquet released Acid Yantra, but the other
two discs came out on the small UFO label and may
be harder to find.

The new CD is due any day, there's a gatefold vinyl version with additional 7" too.

_Return Journey_ is the killer, & although I'm not a great fan of _Reflector_ or _Libertine_ all their records are worth hearing.

All the old records are about to be reissued.

Wandering Boy Poet, Sunday, 1 June 2003 22:34 (twenty years ago) link

I second Return Journey, but i actually like Libertine as well.

Thirding Return Journey and the utterly amazing Other Way Out and Acid Yantra. Couple of tracks on Libertine made it into the iPod also.

Other Way Out is the classic - a rare and sensational syzygy of tunes and firepower. not only one of the finest psych albums of the '90s, but one that can stand erect and proud beside any kosmiche monument you'd care to name. The much rawer Return Journey is an important footnote, but only Acid Yantra and the pretty hot Live Drug live up OWO. in comparison, the Sun Dial of Revolver and Libertine sounds neutered and painfully compromised. if you like Steve Wilson's occasional dalliances with ravesignal BPMs, you might like the "Phaser" remixes. otherwise this awkward mid-period is best forgotten and, in the hallowed light of OWO, forgiven.

the lone Modern Art LP, All Aboard the Mind Train, is valuable for its glimpse of the glories to come, but it's too virginal, too unformed to recommend to any but the Gary Ramon die-hards.

if there's really another reissue of OWO in the offing, that would make five appearances (Tangerine original, UFO reissue, Acme reissue, Gallium Arsenide reissue, ...) of this album since its 1990 release! could this be a record for such a recent recording?

Revolver = Reflecter. one of those days.

and if you choose to ignore my warning on this lukewarm sub-'gaze effort, at least seek out the first edition with the nifty mirrored sleeve. a nice thing to keep in the car for touch ups and other minor grooming concerns.

"if there's really another reissue of OWO in the offing, that would make five appearances (Tangerine original, UFO reissue, Acme reissue, Gallium Arsenide reissue, ...) of this album since its 1990 release!"

I'm under the impression that this latest reissue might well be the definitive version as it rounds up all the tracks that have been on the various versions & adds a few extras. Plus it's been 24 bit remastered for whatever that's worth. Perhaps I'll finally update my UFO version.

isn't it Sun Dial, not Sundial? i only have a couple of the shoebaggy ufo releases, but i like them! then they got really really good? i like the beats on fazer ep. maybe i am lame.

There isn't a lot of consistency in their naming on the album covers. Zen For Sale is also outstanding... supposedly there's a newer one out too.

Ah, OK - it's a retrospective pushed back to 2006... See http://www.sundial.org.uk

latest Other Way Out reissue is nice (though the original art is missed) . . . major bonus for including Other Way In, outtakes and cosmic jams from the same sessions, definitely worth it if you're into OWO

prince rupert, Tuesday, 9 May 2006 00:22 (seventeen years ago) link

Heh, oddly enough I wondering why I found the original Other Way Out for a buck last week -- and now I know why! But it'll tide me over until I get this reissue, not like I paid much for it!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 01:09 (seventeen years ago) link

it's definitely worth a buck! if you like it, you might want to think about checking out the reissue and Other Way In

so i just purchased the "other way out" at amoeba on a whim and man this is really good. all those bjm apologists/lovers who think they were on the top of the 90's psych rock heap need to be directed to this record. also, they use the fuzzbox to maximum dividends on this, kinda reminds me of index from canada

NEW ALBUM NEW ALBUM NEW ALBUM!

It's self-titled "Sun Dial" and just came out this week. What I'm taking away from the two tracks up on MySpace is "hey, we've been doing what those stoner rock dudes do only we're better, heavier, and have a 15 year head start. fuck this let's go!"

Dear Gary, Sun Dial, everyone -

Look I know you specialize in only the finest psychedelic products and that for maximum effect you prefer only the finest plastic and vinyl material. But goddamn it, I'm on day whatever of situation critical insomnia. Discreet ambient nonsense isn't putting me to sleep so I seriously need to have my shit jacked up and my head pounded into a film of grey goo by HEAVY MONSTER RIFF DAMAGE. Want electronic download! Don't want to wait on international shipment of little pieces of plastic!

Thanks for heeding my call. $10 iTunes download much better than $25 import CD. Destruction of tectonic plates begin in 5... 4... 3...

Mentioned in the rolling psych thread, but in case you missed it there -- just discovered that a new album, Made in the Machine, came out last month. Most of the reviews I've found are in languages I don't understand but definitely looking forward to checking this out.
