Say something enlightening about Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle...
Who were they and why did Cornershop write a song about them?
If you are well versed, offer us a Classic or Dud/Search and Destroy/Taking Sides on them.

Thank you for your attention.

i'm sure we've had threads on both of them, custos

a. mangeshkar has recorded more songs than anyone else alive; second most = bhosle
b. they are sisters
c. they hate each other
d. they are huge bollywood playback stars = they sing the songs in bombay musicals (which are all dubbed)

when it's daylight here if i remember i shall dig out some of my tapes: i am not at ALL an expert on this music but i love it to bits

i've been meaning to get an asha bholse compilation that i saw in tower, but haven't got around to it yet
but given that there's millions of recordings,is it safe to buy a random compilation or should i look for a specific album?

i'm sure we've had threads on both of them, custos
Well, now theres another thread about them, s.
(I saw some CD-R bootleg comps of their stuff at a booth in a flea market on the 24th. Was tempted to buy some, but wanted guidance. Hence, the thread.)

c. they hate each other
Okay, then we DEFINITELY must initiate...
The Bollywood Grudge Match of the Century
Taking Sides: Asha vs Lata...FITE!

I just bought Lata's duets in a shopping expidition in the indian part of town and they're all from 58-64 and have this interesting feel in that half are indian vocals with western instrumentation (lotsa accordians!!) and half are very western vocals over very trad-instrumentation.

I also bought, among other things, my first Fateh Ali Khan album ever and was completely blown away by how fan-fucking-tastic it is.

So that kid at the booth was lying! ("Asha...she's...like India's version of Madonna...")
Subthreads:
1) Who *is* India's version of Madonna? Najma?
2) Who is India's equivalent of, say, Joni Mitchell or Janis Joplin?
3) India's Enya?
4) India's Souixsie Sioux?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 15:55 (twenty years ago) link

"Lata's duets album"--which of the 4,000 of them? (I fear I do not exaggerate.)

Don't bother buying bootlegs, since if you can get to an Indian neighborhood you can find legal CDs for pretty cheap, not to mention cassettes for ridiculously cheap. A lot of them are on RPG, or EMI-India. Any of the CDs on the endless "Golden Collection" series are probably recommended. I'd have to check my shelf when I get home to be more specific.

Asha is so NOT Madonna. Actually it's a crime to say "Asha is the Indian version of _____"--she's so ubiqitous it would be more appropriate to say "____ is the ____ version of Asha."

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 16:04 (twenty years ago) link

Okay, so then
"who is the (American|British|HopHop|Goth|Indie) version of Asha?"
Hmmm. Maybe be the word "version" should be "equivalent"...

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 16:14 (twenty years ago) link

"Master P is the hip-hop Asha Bhosle."

Hahahahahahaha!
How does 'Lil Bow Wow fit into your conspiracy theory, then, amatuerist?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 16:20 (twenty years ago) link

The duets album is from the EMI/Grammaphone rare gems series.

revive cause I scored a lata rough guides comp (released in '04) last night -- its stuff from late 40s (when she started) up to the mid-90s. In the info booklet it says bhosle recorded more songs. was enjoying a cpl of tracks this morning, what a peculiar voice she has!there's a bhosle comp to so I must check that out.

I found (what might be) the same comp ("Rough Guide to Bollywood Legends: Lata Mangeshkar" ?) in the Library but didn't check it out.

I don't know if anybody said this on any other threads but

Search "Piya Tu Ab Tu Aaja"- byAsha Bhosle

which has kind of a spaghetti western sound and features her husband and producer RD (Rahul Dev) Berman shouting "Monica! Oh, my darling!"

i never ceased to be amazed at the sheer number of l.m. compilations available. i think it must be at 10,000.

Saw Asha last night with an orchestra (and her 14 year-old grand-daughter) finish her set with "dum maro dum." Not bad for 82. She did Bollywood numbers, a ghazal or 2, a song from her sister, and some other stuff. Her voice still has range, although it's not what it once was
