Anyone hear the new Pernice Brothers record that just came out? I saw a review on AMG and the author was sort of gushing. A lot. Just curious if anyone else thought it was that good.

I bought it earlier this week - it is good, need to listen to it some more to really have a strong opinion. it is of course very lush sounding and so far track 5 is my favorite

carol, Friday, 23 May 2003 21:18 (twenty years ago) link

i'm prone to gush about it too. perfect sad/sweet pop with some lush touches. pernice's songwriting has never been better, letting some sun shine through the customary sadsack stuff. my favorite pernice record and one of my faves of the year.

okay, listened to it some more - song writing is exceptionally good once again but I hate that you cant really read the words to the songs because of the way the liner notes are done.

carol, Sunday, 25 May 2003 15:59 (twenty years ago) link

...you cant really read the words to the songs because of the way the liner notes are done.

If you send Mr. Pernice a box of tissues, I'm sure he'll sensitively cry into them in falsetto and then write all the lyrics down on them for you and send them back to you. With a nice string bed.

I kinda like Pernice Bros but liner note lyrics molest my inner child.

Discover a lovelier you has leaked. I like it...the first track "There Goes The Sun" is wonderful.

he's one of the dullest artists to write nice melodies...I mean, his songwriting skill is apparent, but there's something about his music that just falls flat

It's pleasant, but thin.

Zed Szetlian (Finn MacCool), Friday, 6 May 2005 16:00 (eighteen years ago) link

Everytime there's a new Pernice record, I listen to it constantly for a week or two and then file it away to forget about until there's a new Pernice record again.

Just got this one today, so we'll see how long my fascination lasts. The production, however, is very mid-'80s England though. That could be a definite check in the "plus" column.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 6 May 2005 16:06 (eighteen years ago) link

Did anyone get the live album? Is it worth owning?

Jonathan (Jonathan), Friday, 6 May 2005 16:10 (eighteen years ago) link

It's alright. If you've never heard their version of the Pretenders' "Talk of the Town," you should hunt it down.

Cool, thanks.

Is it out on p2p? Would love to hear something from it, went to the solo show last week at the Mercury Lounge and liked what I heard.

Found it on slsk today.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 6 May 2005 23:59 (eighteen years ago) link

I'll check it out, thanks. btw, speaking of covers, Joe did an excellent cover of a Zombies song last week, but can't for the life of me remember the name. was anyone else there?

Picked this up at lunch today and I'm listening to it now. 'There Goes The Sun' is totally dreamy. Bits of the Cure and New Order pop up throughout the album. So far, better than 'Yours, Mine and Ours.'

I just downloaded this off emusic (wow, immediate release). It's pretty as all hell on one listen. I'll be listening to this a lot for the next couple days.

just listened to yours mine and ours for the first time in a while over the weekend - pretty great record. haven't been in love with the last few things pernice has done, but he did have quite a winning streak going there for a while.

Yes to "Yours Mine Ours" as a great record

It still kills me that Sherwin-Williams used "Weakest Shade of Blue" in a commercial.

world won't end and overcome by happiness are pretty classic, too, imo. and the Chappaquiddick Skyline rec is killer as well.

Second album is my fave.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 2 July 2013 18:26 (nine years ago) link

guess there is also this which i also heard about and forgot:
The New Mendicants are Mike Belitsky, Norman Blake and Joe Pernice. This, their first recording, was produced by Norman (with help from Mike and Joe) in Toronto, where they all live now. This 6-song CD EP was put together so Norman and Joe would have something to sell on their January/February 2013 tour of Australia. (Mike wasn't actually in the band on its first day, when the touring plan was hatched and flights were purchased. He joined on the 7th day.) It contains 3 brand new songs, plus 2 instances of Joe and Norman covering themselves (tres postmodern) and one INXS cover (The Australian government requires musicians wishing to tour Australia release an INXS cover before they will issue the necessary work visas. But luckily, they had some good songs.)

new scud record is pretty damn good, only a couple clunkers in there. might be my favorite pernice thing in quite a while. the bonus disc that came w/ pre-orders has three great outtakes from the mid 90s. he can be such a great melody writer -- title aside, i can imagine dionne warwick tackling "son of a bitch."

The New Mendicants EP is quite good, worth picking up if you enjoy the man's work.

The section around 2:28 is perfection.

Website hasn't been updated since the 2015 Roger Lion release, but still hold out hope they put out another album on the same level as Overcome by Happiness or The World Won't End. I go back and forth between ObH, TWWE, and YM&O as my favorite PB release, though no real need to choose.

I thought I read at one point that he'd recorded a Goodbye Killer followup but never bothered releasing it. Anyway his '98-'06 albums make up one of the great songwriting streaks in history, imo, Bandcamp will be a richer place.

Well, I get that Spotify is not always good or worthwhile for audiences so more power to him for keeping it off the platform. But personally my audio set-up is such that if it's not on Spotify I'm most likely not going to hear it. I know it's *possible* to hear it but I basically manage all my music through my phone these days and everything is done through the Spotify app. I don't have a home stereo or even a home computer.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Wednesday, 11 September 2019 20:57 (three years ago) link

You could just hear it via the Bandcamp website on your phone, that's what I did.

And I was not that enthused, it's ok but maybe my time for Pernice Brothers love has simply passed.

On June 19, 2020 I will release a solo album. It’s called RICHARD. It’s basically me and a nylon string guitar I recorded in my basement bike shop during Covid lockdown. There are no world-altering songs of protest on it. There are no songs that poetically and compassionately describe the lives of our fellow citizens who have lived within a system braided with racism. I wish I could write that song. God, knows I have tried, but they always come up short. (Maybe the title song goes part of the way there. I don’t know.)

curmudgeon, Saturday, 6 June 2020 13:59 (two years ago) link

awww. this sounds promising.

as great as seeing him/them live was (at their first show in a long time, I gather) Spread the Feeling didn't really hit me

Ooh, thanks for that. Speaking of a Pernice and a guitar, I watched The Half of It on Netflix and was surprised to learn from the credits that he wrote its talent show ballad. It's a whole new era of earnest YouTubers covering him.

Seems there might be an album of Barry Manilow covers at some point, too: https://www.pastemagazine.com/music/joe-pernice/joe-pernice-barely-manilow-series/
