It has been done before, but it's always fun when you've got nothing better to do - or when you're supposed to be writing but procrastinating for all you're worth in my case...

1) Kitee Saree Raat - RDB
2) Last Fair Deal Gone Down - Robert Johnson
3) Buss Back Skettel - Cécile & Tanya Stephens
4) Sylvester (New Years Day Mix) - Weschel Garland

I have heard a grand total of one of these so far.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 10 May 2003 01:30 (twenty years ago) link

It'd better be Waylong Jennings!

Adam A. (Keiko), Saturday, 10 May 2003 02:00 (twenty years ago) link

Violent Onsen Geisha - Moods of mod generation (Alec Empire remix) (boring)
Burnt By The Sun - There are pictures of me on the internet (ok, but they have better stuff, I have no urge to track down this EP)
June Of 44 - Does your heart beat slower (I'd definitely like to purchas something by this band, this particular song isn't particularly good though)
Thin Lizzy - Angel Of Death (eh.. no thanks)
Xaal - Final (this lasts less than a minute, and is basically drumrolls and guitarfreakouts. Sucks)
Cynic - Agitating Affliction (from their 1989 demo. Fairly good, I still think their album 'Focus' is the best thing they ever did, but they were generally great when they were death metal too)
Carbonized - Whip me darling (one of the more boring "technical death metal" bands of yore. These guys pretty much deserve being forgotten, this track is basically a setpiece instrumental though, so not a proper track as such)
Bohuslav Martinu - Heifetz & Piatigorsky (badly marked MP3, obviously.. I assume it's the duet for violin and cello piece, unless he did more than one piece for that sort of setup. It's fairly good, hasn't quite blown my mind though)
The Necks - Jazz Cancer (I don't like how the bassist basically hangs himself up in single riffs, though that main riff is really cool. Not particularly good stuff, but listenable)
The Locust - The perils of believeing in Round Squares (one of my least favorite bigger grind bands of recent years. The synthy stuff is kinda fun, but overall the songs are pretty crappy. I don't like the related band Cattle Decapitation either)

I sincerely doubt iTunes is that sentient. I blame you.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 10 May 2003 11:23 (twenty years ago) link

It's true - iTunes picked the raisins out of the cake, that little imp.
Another go:

Amp - Tomorrow
Motion - Carousel
Chameleons - Swamp Thing
DNTEL - The Dream Of Evan And Chan
Neil Young - Old Man
Ellen Fullman - Harmonic Cross Sweep-Overtone
Machine Drum - Big Beauty Hose
Senking - Movies

QED.

Frühlingsmute (Wintermute), Saturday, 10 May 2003 11:36 (twenty years ago) link

This is irresistible, partly to find out exactly what's sitting on the drive, partly the bizarre self-presentation. At least I like most of mine (was afeared they might have been opportunistic picks I never listen to).

From 6614 songs (why are we saying this?), in a mutant iTunes:

Reach for the sun [Pluramon remix] - Sun
Money (That's what I want) - Strong, Barrett
Ahhh... fishing - Lurie, John
Lucky (War Child) - Radiohead/The Section
untagged rock 'n' roll track from Ace compilation
Complicity - Lindsay, Arto
Comin' off (CC vibe) - Hurricane
I'm looking through you (Take 2) - The Beatles
Fourth of July - Galaxie 500
A Swallow Song - Farina, Mimi & Richard

Okay. Must listen to Galaxie 500 more. And all the others.

Alan Connor, Jr., Saturday, 10 May 2003 12:36 (twenty years ago) link

1200 odd songs. I love it when randomize looks like it would make a good mix CD.

New Pornographers - Testament to You in Verse
Farben - Farben Says: Love to Love You Baby
Roots Manuva - Highest Grade Dub
Altered Images - I Could be Happy
Kitchens of Distinction - When in Heaven
The Coral - Goodbye
Wall of Voodoo - Factory
DAF - Das Ist Liebe
X - I'm Coming Over [demo version]
Queen - Staying Power

kristin hersh - your dirty answer

I wonder if this is more likely than most songs to come up here, since it was an official-release MP3 at a crucual moment? I can't really justify that, but will stick by it.

It's also come up quite often when I've done this (with 20 songs) for my own amusement (and also to remind me of artists I never listen to) -- but not yet on the random play CDRs I make periodically for my friend George South, who listens to them on shuffle mode.

I actually wouldn't recognise two of the above at all, and for another three would only be able to give artist. Must listen more. Thanks a bunch.

G Flame - Da Wallz

Andy K (Andy K), Saturday, 10 May 2003 13:02 (twenty years ago) link

Out of interest, went to my external hard disk (8131). Interesting. Perhaps iTunes ups the cherry-picking sentience once it knows you expect it?

Party wit me - Ranks, Tiger
Don't fight it, feel it - Primal Scream
Gonna find me a rainbow - Rainwater Marvin
Mannish boy - Waters, Muddy
Dreadlock child - Soulwax
Lilac wine - Simone, Nina
Jam - Frank, Joe
Wreck of the old '97 - Cash, Johnny
Hairshirt - R.E.M.
Paperback writer (Take 2) - The Beatles

This wouldn't be such a good compilation CD, if only because of the one hour Joe Frank radio programme in the middle. But a reminder that Hairshirt is a great song that I haven't lsitened to for ten years is a Good Thing. Hey! Maybe Screamadelica will sound good this afternoon too!

Alan Connor, Jr., Saturday, 10 May 2003 13:04 (twenty years ago) link

Last post, I sort-of promise.

Do any of the above lists contain tracks by the posters themselves, or by their mates? This typically happens to me when I do it for fun. Graham Coxon said, iirc, that he likes it when this happens to him on his iPod, and that it's reassuring that his "own" stuff sounds good interspersed with "proper" tracks.
