Steve Wynn - S & D/C or D?

Ex-frontman of the Dream Syndicate, he's now made more albums as a solo artist than the band ever did. But are any of them in the same league as the best Dream Syndicate stuff? (And what would you say that is, seeing as how we don't have a DS S&D either?)

DS's Days of Wine and Roses is Classic cubed. But beyond that, somehow, he ended up being one of those guys--writes serviceable songs and sings them with flair and personality, but never, ever gets me that excited. I liked DS's Medicine Show and Out of the Grey just fine. I chuckled over Danny and Dusty many a time. I've seen perfectly respectable live shows from the man within the past few years. But DW&R is the only one of his records I still own, or care to.

Wow. Wouldn't it be something if, in the spirit of all the other recent reunions of ahead-of-their-time postpunk groups, Wynn got back together with Karl Precoda and Kendra Smith (and Dennis Duck too, I suppose)? I'd drive a few hundred miles to see that.

Classic. Some of his solo stuff has been patchy, but whatchagonnado? He's also an exceptionally nice guy....and his girlfriend (the drummer from Zuzu's Petals) is way hot.

Search: the Gutterball album he did with members of House of Freaks. Awesome stuff.

Minor classic. The last record, the double one, is pretty damn hot. The solo stuff's never been quite as fuzzy as I want it to be.

I'd love to see a reunion, too. Really, I'd be happy if Karl Precoda would just get off his ass and play guitar again anywhere.

MTE: Precoda just came out with a new record, fronting a band whose name I . . . can't recall off the top of my head. I'll find out, though.

Precoda's band is The Last Days of May, and I believe they have three records out on various labels.

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a reunion - it's not that anyone in the band actively hates each other, it's more of a lack of interest on Precoda's (and, I'm guessing, Smith's) part.

Gutterball stuff is really, really nice. I also really dug the album he did with Come as his backing band; the stuff had... er, balls.

The Live at KPFK's Studio Z album is also great. Really it's only the last DS album, Ghost Stories that I didn't like, although Out of the Grey drags toward the end. The Wynn solo disks are not as gripping, but the few I have all have their moments.

nickn (nickn), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 18:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

DS - Classic, for the first two albums. First one is classic megacubed. The Live at Raj's disc is quite good, actually, but doesn't hold a patch to the original album. The live album recorded pre-Days of Wine and Roses is good, but not as relevatory as i'd hoped it'd be.

Wynn - Some interesting pop stuff on his proper solo albums, but i lost interest after the third one or so.

Gutterball - Semi-classic first album. Recorded in something like 48 hours and it shows, in a good way. Other albums, meh.

LDOM - Classic, but i'm a freak.

DS reunion will never happen. Too many people hate Wynn. And even if they didn't, i suspect there'd be little interest. I'd rather see Last Days of May at this point.

Ahem!

I released the first Last Days Of May album on No-Fi. Email me and I'll get you the details. Albums 2 & 3 came out on Squealer.

Oh, and there's a couple of odd LDOM tracks on a Klang (they make noise!) sampler

Seconding Matt's comment here too. I already saw DS in it's various incarnations back in the day. I *really* want to see LDOM.

Has anyone seen Steve Wynn live recently? Any good?

(He's playing at the Borderline on Friday, btw)

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 8 May 2003 10:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

Saw him a year ago at CBGB. Kicked ass. Played "When You Smile," "Halloween," "Merrittville," and a bunch from that damn double album which I can't seem to remember the name of.

He's playing here in St. Louis next month.

The albums do nothing for me, but seeing Steve Wynn with whatever band he had two years ago (Zuzu's drummer, plus a bassist, and a guitarist who looked and played like a younger Ira Kaplan--he wasn't on the album) was seriously one of the most exuberant live rock experiences I've ever had...

Saw (and interviewed) him a year or two ago. It was one of the best things (not the interview, although he was extremely friendly, as was his girlfriend).

I saw him at a festival in Germany a couple of years ago, very very good. and i think the Guitarist was/is Chris Brokaw (Codeine / Come etc)..

I was really pleasantly surprised by Here Come The Miracles when it came out. Well, actually I was quite excited, per my slavering review. It still holds up well. I felt Static Transmission (2003) was kind of samey at the time, but since I've picked up ...Tick...Tick...Tick (2006) and Crossing Dragon Bridge (2008), I need to rehear it, because this is all really good. He continued his association with crime noir author George Pelecanos, who co-wrote "Cindy, It Was Always You." No wonder the stuff went well with my noir mix of Gallon Drunk, Flaming Stars, Gun Club, etc. while I was reading Cathi Unsworth's Bad Penny Blues.

Gotta say, it kicks ass right out of the gate. But I've found his solo work really patchy, another artist who would benefit greatly from a well-chosen anthology.

I was just browsing through the gajillion new albums available on eMusic via the Universal dump, happened across the Danny and Dusty album, and thought, Hey! Steve Wynn! Whatever happened to him?

That's all I got.

kinda lost track after static transmission, but here comes the miracles was fab, and the miracles really are a pretty fucking great live band.

Here Come the Miracles was great, and there was a record from about 4 years ago that I played all the time.

Wasn't aware that Wynn had a box set:

...an 11-CD set that chronicles, with lavish deluxe editions, the guitar-driven albums Wynn recorded between 1995 and 2005, most of which have been long out-of-print...166 tracks, 57 of them totally unreleased, plus 31 other rarities! That’s right…over half of this 11-CD set consists of either hitherto unknown recordings or tracks that have been almost impossible to find! As for the other tracks, they hail from the following albums: the American releases Melting In The Dark, Sweetness and Light, My Midnight, Here Come The Miracles, Static Transmission, and …Tick…Tick…Tick, and the German-only compilation entitled The Emusic Singles Collection (rare tracks from another European-only release, a collection of rarities entitled Pick of the Litter, appear here as well).
