I just listened to this album last nite, only a few lover songs.
But it kicks ass.

live wire is an all tim classic, and when nikki sixx lights his pants on fire, that's pretty rock even though the album is kinda wuss.

keith (keithmcl), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 00:20 (eighteen years ago) link

the album is only half wuss. There are some righteous fucking moments dude. Check out the title track (punk as fuck), Come on and Dance (still sounds like no one else), and even "On With The Show" is kinda good for a ballad. I like that album, always have. It sounds hella raw. Too bad they went on to become one of the worst bands in the whole world. Ah well.

They didn't really begin sucking until Girls, Girls, Girls, and even it had a few choice moments.

paul cox (paul cox), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 04:06 (eighteen years ago) link

yes but Dr Feelgood? Awful kanawful.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 04:37 (eighteen years ago) link

It's only awful if you approach it as a Motley Crue album. If you approach it as a pop album, "Don't Go Away Mad" and "Same Old Situation" and "Kickstart My Heart" are great tunes.

Too Fast For Love totally kicks ass. Roger correct about "Come On and Dance"; "Public Enemy #1" is another great one.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 04:50 (eighteen years ago) link

Dr.Feelgood shits all over Too Fast for Love. "Come On and Dance"? Who dances to the Crue.....especially to that track?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:38 (eighteen years ago) link

The only Crue album you would EVER need: Shout At the Devil!

Any fool knows that.

five years pass...

fantastic, unstoppable, amazing LP

Stormy Davis, Saturday, 3 May 2008 06:40 (thirteen years ago) link

Alex is right, Shout at the Devil kicks this album's ass. Some of the vocals on this one suck for some unknown reason.

Reatards Unite, Saturday, 3 May 2008 07:09 (thirteen years ago) link

Uh, dude sucks?

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Saturday, 3 May 2008 07:23 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, the riffs and grooves lord on this album, but the vocals are the weak link. I like Vince's vocals on subsequent albums but on this one he sounds like he was still finding his voice. He sounds a little like a cute fluffy bunny or something.

moley, Saturday, 3 May 2008 07:34 (thirteen years ago) link

tommy's drum sound on this rec is epic tho

chaki, Saturday, 3 May 2008 07:53 (thirteen years ago) link

"Who dances to the Crue"

Strippers.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 3 May 2008 11:54 (thirteen years ago) link

I like the vocals. They only add to the WTF? production-vibe on this album. This band was so much better when they didn't know what they were doing.

QuantumNoise, Saturday, 3 May 2008 12:07 (thirteen years ago) link

As if to suggest that they know what they're doing now?

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 3 May 2008 12:23 (thirteen years ago) link

According to a quasi-reliable source, lots of Vince Neil's vocals were "ghost-sung" -- or at least "augmented" by Robin Zander of Cheap Trick. Can't say if that's really true or not, but there's your rumor.

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 3 May 2008 12:24 (thirteen years ago) link

x-post

Well, I guess they eventually learned how to play the game. They became pros, more or less. Whereas, on that first album they come off like a bunch of private-press weirdoes, if that makes any sense.

QuantumNoise, Saturday, 3 May 2008 16:18 (thirteen years ago) link

Clearly, Nikki knows what he's doing now…he is a very intelligent, if destructive, guy…

Too Fast is much much bettah than Shout…

Veronica Moser, Saturday, 3 May 2008 16:24 (thirteen years ago) link

The hair metal guide to instant fame had yet to be written when TFFL was made, so it has a raw, metal/punk edge missing from most subsequent hair metal.

QuantumNoise, Saturday, 3 May 2008 16:33 (thirteen years ago) link

Destructive, yes. Intelligent, no.

Too Fast is much much bettah than Shout…

You are incredibly high.

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 3 May 2008 16:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Nikki, too.

QuantumNoise, Saturday, 3 May 2008 17:17 (thirteen years ago) link

That kinda goes without saying.

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 3 May 2008 18:39 (thirteen years ago) link

About half of TFFL is amazing, but the other half gets a little too bubblegummy...not that it's bad, but the Sweet-meets-Cheap Trick feel of something like "Public Enemy #1" totally clashes with the more badass tunes like "Live Wire", "Take Me to the Top", and "Piece of Your Action". They really hit paydirt when Sixx decided to get all eee-vil on us on the next record.

A. Begrand, Saturday, 3 May 2008 18:56 (thirteen years ago) link

I've always thought that there never was a "real" Motley Crue, and that every album was them trying on a different pose (which I think is an entirely legitimate and respectable artistic method).

This is their best album start to finish, but it can't match the power of singles like "Kickstart My Heart" or "Same Ol' Situation." There's a reason that Dr. Feelgood made Bob Rock's career.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 3 May 2008 20:42 (thirteen years ago) link

have you ever spoken to Herr Sixx, Alex in NYC?

Veronica Moser, Sunday, 4 May 2008 19:52 (thirteen years ago) link

Why does the chorus of 'Come On and Dance' sound like the Muppets

Marty J. Bilge (Old Lunch), Friday, 16 July 2021 16:11 (two weeks ago) link

Well, most of Motley Crue do look and play like the Muppets was a formative influence...

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 16 July 2021 16:24 (two weeks ago) link

I have decided in my old age that I definutitely prefer the Leathür Records version of the TFFL album without all the sped-up vocals & effects

(though admittedly it takes a little getting used to)

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 19 July 2021 18:56 (one week ago) link

I'm just now listening to the Leathür version.

Going back and forth between "aw, they should've kept the raw sound of Mick's solo!" to "Why in the hell are they ruining Livewire with ... a smattering of applause?"

pplains, Wednesday, 21 July 2021 16:57 (one week ago) link

This and Shout at the Devil are the only Crue you need.
Some rep for Dr. Feelgood but I think it is garbage.

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 21 July 2021 19:34 (one week ago) link

Too Fast for Love is indeed solid as is Shout.

I have NEVER liked Neil's voice, but it grates on me less on these albums, and the songs are much better.

I'll defend side one of Theater of Pain. Not side two.

And the "Come on and Dance"/Rocky Horror comparison is so accurate it will never leave my head now.
