This is the only one of these I've actually found particularly difficult and after which I feel awful about my exclusions. Another 10:

The Lemon Song
Immigrant Song
Since I've Been Loving You
The Battle Of Evermore
Four Sticks
The Song Remains the Same
Houses Of the Holy
Kashmir
In the Evening
Fool In the Rain

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 19 April 2003 02:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ack! Impossible task! Off the top of my head-

Four Sticks - Zep at their weirdest, haziest best
When the Levee Breaks - Bonham, harmonica, blunted and heavy
Kashmir - majesty
Down by the Seaside - Plant at his hippy best, Hohner electra-piano
Hots on for Nowhere - Page's nuttiest, most concise solo
Dancing Days - Riff, layers
Custard Pie - Riff, Bonham's pattern, heaviest song ever w/ clavinet
Rain Song - beautiful, naked
How Many More Times - early concern w/ texture, movement, blues pastiche
That's the Way - mandolin, more Plant the hippy

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 19 April 2003 03:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, I waffled on including "Custard Pie" as well. What harmony are the guitars on "Dancing Days" even in by the end? It seems really unusual for a pop song. It still floors me how they were able to incorporate such downright weirdness ("Four Sticks" is another example as well as the obvious examples like the noise bit in "Whole Lotta Love") into material that was so simple and populist at the same time. For me, it even feels more effective, less self-conscious than the Beatles' efforts at making pop weird.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 19 April 2003 03:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah I think it's funny that the middle of "Whole Lotta Love" remains by far the weirdest, most atypical music heard on the many, many radio stations where it continues in heavy rotation. Except of course at this point it doesn't reference anything other than itself. I thought about including it - certainly one of the first Zep songs that fried my brain - but I just can't get past having heard it so much. Which is funny because I've heard "Kashmir" just as much but I don't have the same reaction; caught in the right moment it can still feel fresh.

"Four Sticks" I just love for the strangeness of the whole thing. I wish I knew enough to identify what scale the keyboard lines are using; it sounds like arabic music but that may just be due to their reedy, fuzzed timbre. Yeah, something like "Dancing Days", rhythmically the riff is tricky enough, but then Page layers all these guitars together; at the end, is it just up an octave? I can't tell. On the verse I can't tell if he's playing some kind of steel guitar or if that's a synthesizer! Zeppelin songs are like the most fun to try to figure out how to play on guitar or find music or tab for, because you realize how inventive Page was. It's also a bit frustrating because you can never sound like the Zep version. I mean, how can you recreate that mass of guitars on "When the Levee Breaks"? You can't.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 19 April 2003 03:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

You can't.

That's what a pact with Satan gets you. Inimitability!

Aw, :D

I think what sets them apart is that Page and Jones were two of the best arrangers of their generation. They could have taken the basic song catalogue of any band, say Molly Hatchet, and devised arrangements that would make their records snap a lot harder. (I don't know Hatchet from a pap smear, maybe they're not the best example.) "Hammer of the Rednecks," etc. Anyway, good songs are great, but good songs + good arrangements = something totally off the hook like, uh, hey! -- "Four Sticks."

truck-patch pixel farmer (my crop froze in the field) (Rock Hardy), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:55 (eighteen years ago) link

Well, it certainly helped that they had one of the best drummers of all time along with two of the best arrangers!

It's pretty amazing when a guy as talented as Robert Plant is the weak link in your band.

I just spent a minute frantically Googling "led zeppelin and sibyl." Thought it might be one of the new outtakes.

Speaking of which, I'd sneak "The Girl I Love She Got Long Black Wavy Hair" (TGILSGLBWH) into my POX if I could.

If I could only turn to one song for all my LZ super nutrients, I'd probably go with Ramble On.

Minerals: violin bow on solo, multitracked guitars/RP squeals
Vitamins: Tolkin references, uses word "ramble"

This and “Ten Years Gone” are the songs that finally made me a Zep fan (after a lifetime of indifference/dislike)
