Which outlet for Siouxsie/Budgie creativity do you favor?

paul cox (paul cox), Thursday, 10 April 2003 03:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

Wow, I haven't thought about that Creatures stuff in something like forever.

slutsky (slutsky), Thursday, 10 April 2003 03:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

...which kind of answers the question.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 10 April 2003 03:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

I seem to remember liking it though.

slutsky (slutsky), Thursday, 10 April 2003 03:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

(hardly a wildly enthusiastic endorsement)

slutsky (slutsky), Thursday, 10 April 2003 03:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

Haha yeah, exactly. It's not that it was bad, it just wasn't Siouxsie and the Banshees.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 10 April 2003 03:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

What Ally said, but I love them there Creatures too.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 April 2003 03:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

I just AMGed them to find it was you who wrote the review of Boomerang, Ned. It's all slowly coming back, though I don't even really recognize any of the song titles. I must give myself time.

slutsky (slutsky), Thursday, 10 April 2003 03:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

I was just asking because I got a copy of the A Bestiary of... compilation and, never having heard the earliest Creatures material before, was rather surprised as how fantastic it's held up. Even more so than songs on the Boomerang lp.

It's hard to pick one because they're two sides of the same coin. Current fascination with the Creatures aside, I think I'd still pick the Banshees in a pinch.

paul cox (paul cox), Thursday, 10 April 2003 03:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

So it's settled: we're all agreed. Goodnight everyone!

slutsky (slutsky), Thursday, 10 April 2003 03:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

Boomerang's a fantastic record - lovely artwork, too.

And their version of 'Right Now' is positively corset blowing.

russ t, Thursday, 10 April 2003 11:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

Creatures = side dish.
Banshees = entree.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 10 April 2003 13:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

Siouxsie Sioux herself = dessert.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 10 April 2003 16:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

The Glove = After dinner mint.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 10 April 2003 16:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

I was just going to bring up the ol' Glove, another project I haven't thought about in a long time.

slutsky (slutsky), Thursday, 10 April 2003 17:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

Who is the post-dinner apartif? The Sisters of Mercy?

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

No, they're the vomit on the street outside the restaurant.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Nausea (Casts) My Reflection"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 April 2003 18:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

Who is the post-dinner apartif? The Sisters of Mercy?
If this is a dinner-and-a-movie deal, then it goes like this

Creatures = side dish.
Banshees = entree.
Siouxsie Sioux herself = dessert.
The Glove = After dinner mint.
Sisters of Mercy = Going down to the theatre and seeing "Kafka"
Cocteau Twins = The make-out music when you get home.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 10 April 2003 19:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Kafka," eh?

slutsky (slutsky), Thursday, 10 April 2003 19:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yep.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 10 April 2003 19:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

BUT WHO IS THE NICE GLASS OF PORT GODDAMNIT.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 10 April 2003 19:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

Peter Murphy's "Deep"

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 10 April 2003 19:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

Or if your looking for something more sweet|less smoky "Songs from Another Season" by David J.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 10 April 2003 19:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

Rosetta Stone = abject self-loathing, awkward silence and crushing hangover the next morning.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 10 April 2003 19:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

Lacuna Coil == same as Rosetta Stone, except what woke you up was the upstair neighbour blaring "System of a Down" at 6:45am.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 10 April 2003 19:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

Custos has just described my personal hell when I was dating FDNY.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 10 April 2003 20:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

Unfortunate.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 April 2003 20:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

FDNY?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 10 April 2003 20:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah. All of them.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 10 April 2003 20:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

Fire Department of New York?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 10 April 2003 20:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

No, "Fondling Dumplings Next Year." Great band.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 April 2003 23:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

When I was in high school, I had the idea of making a musical that used various pop songs I adored. The first song was going to be a club scene using "Pretty Boys and Pretty Girls/Tubular Bells" by Book of Love, which would segue into a showdown outside set to "Standing There". I never got further than that, but it was still a brilliant idea.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 11 April 2003 02:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

You know, this thread has sparked some very gradual reminiscing on my part--I really had almost completely forgotten (or at least not thought about, as I keep saying) the Creatures and the Glove. And while I don't really have much desire to dig those albums up or purchase them again, remembering that they exist has sort of made me happy. So thanks for making me happy, everyone!

In case you hadn't guessed, I'm also drunk.

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 11 April 2003 03:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

Siouxsie and the Cocteaus in the same sentence? You Americans can be SO weird.

russ t, Friday, 11 April 2003 08:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ned's gonna hate this, but when me and artist friend went to see his least favourite singer ever, Siouxsie Sioux and Marc Almond showed up to give this singer props (hint: his daddy's a folk singer).

suzy (suzy), Friday, 11 April 2003 10:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

R W isn't my least favorite singer, though. Mr. de la Rocha holds that honor. FOREVER.

And after all, all our heroes have feet of clay in the end. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 April 2003 12:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ned, please don't make me sound like I'm dating lame indie bands, I'll frigging shoot myself if that rumor goes around.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 11 April 2003 13:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

This is true, that would be a terrible cross to bear.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 April 2003 14:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think I'd sooner date Fred Durst, that'd be funnier anyway.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 11 April 2003 14:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

Anthony would get terribly jealous of you.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 April 2003 14:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

I luv PM's "Deep."

Mary (Mary), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yep. That album is like bathing in a bathtub full of warm red wine...

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

Not the image I would use, but I appreciate the sentiment. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 April 2003 19:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

two years pass...
ANYWAY...

The joy of hearing the Creatures's Bestiary comp with Feast and the Wild Things EP and "Right Now" and all that can't even be measured. Is Feast the best Martin Denny tribute that wasn't necessarily planned on being one ever?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 May 2005 16:22 (eighteen years ago) link

Ew, why would you do that to perfectly lovely red wine???

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:02 (eighteen years ago) link

*reads up a bit* Well, it's Custos and all.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:12 (eighteen years ago) link

WHENEVER I SEE RED WINE, I JUST WANNA PUT MY ASS IN IT

The Ghost of I Hope Ally Sees This (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:17 (eighteen years ago) link

That only works if you're wearing your purple Prince manties.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:29 (eighteen years ago) link

Dude, I would never ruin sexy underwear by dipping it in wine!

The Ghost of What Kind Of Heathen Do You Take Me For??? (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:35 (eighteen years ago) link

I love you.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:40 (eighteen years ago) link

two months pass...
I'm actually in the mood for the Creatures ('Wild Thing' EP and 'Feast' at least) more often than for the Banshees, the last couple years.

Definitely rank as one of the best side bands of major rock bands ever. Maybe the best.

I.M. (I.M.), Monday, 11 July 2005 01:19 (eighteen years ago) link

fourteen years pass...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right_Now_(Herbie_Mann_song)

The Creatures' version started with a distinct introduction, with Siouxsie clicking her fingers to mark the tempo. She also added the "palala pam pam" that she sings before the arrival of the congas. These special arrangements were not present in the initial version by Mel Tormé; they were created by the Creatures.

This is one of the most underrated side-projects ever

shout-out to his family (DJP), Monday, 6 July 2020 20:05 (three years ago) link

Maybe you should start a thread about it.

Lipstick O.G. (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 6 July 2020 20:14 (three years ago) link

Oh wait

Lipstick O.G. (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 6 July 2020 20:15 (three years ago) link

favourite creatures song atm = weathercade

Boris the Spreader (NickB), Monday, 6 July 2020 20:48 (three years ago) link

This is one of the most underrated side-projects ever

And even more unknown are the fanclub singles. "Murdering Mouth", "Red Wrapping Paper", "Rocket Ship" - absolutely brilliant. Also must rep for Siouxsie's outstanding guest appearance on Basement Jaxx's "Cish Cash".

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Monday, 6 July 2020 21:07 (three years ago) link

lmao that poll
