From what I've heard I believe she's one of my favorite Brazilian singers. What I've heard is a best-of and a dub of the record Dez Anos Depois.

However I can't really afford any of her CDs, which are only available as pricey Japanese imports and in a rather mammoth box set that runs for about $250.

Curious to know if anyone has some records they might dub for me, or perhaps point me in the direction of somewhere I could find them for cheap (not Dusty Groove, who don't carry them for less than $19 a CD). I've heard somlivre.com is a good place to get Brazilian CDs, but I can't make heads or tails of their website.

Or we can just talk about Nara Leão, "the Muse of Bossa Nova."

a guy i met in canada loves nara leao. I might get him to post to this thread if i can (he has a box set that he got at reasonable prices).

How would you compare her to, say, Elis Regina? Elis is my new favourite singer, as of a week ago. I picked up what I think is an early album, called "O Bem Do Amor". Most groovy.

pauls00, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 11:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

I would say that Regina is a more technically gifted singer--one of her great assets was her professional-level versatility and her precision. Nara is more of an amateur by comparison. She has a slightly nasal voice and not the greatest range in the world. But she knows how to use the range she has. Her gift I suppose is her offhanded, wry phrasing. I'm told her albums are more consistent than Regina's overall, but I don't know for sure.

I might just splurge on the box set, if I can get rid of enough other stuff on eBay.

>What I've heard is a best-of and a dub of
>the record Dez Anos Depois.

"Dez Anos Depois" (1971) is one of her best.
Lots of classics, just exquisite.

>However I can't really afford any of her CDs,
>which are only available as pricey Japanese
>imports

All Japanese imports are "pricey". Nothing
that can be done about it I'm afraid. All
the Japanese Nara reissues sound fabulous!

>and in a rather mammoth box set that runs
>for about $250.

There are 2 box sets. One for her best years
(1964-1975), and one for the rest (1977-1989),
which isn't as good, but still contains some
wonderful material, including a rare 1966 LP.
Both contain a disc of "Raridades", plus bonus
cuts on many discs (some in French & Spanish).

It might be $250 at Amazon, or other corporate
beasts, but at Dusty, box #1 is $150 and box #2
is $140, if you want to stay with US dealers.

>or perhaps point me in the direction of somewhere
>I could find them for cheap (not Dusty Groove,
>who don't carry them for less than $19 a CD).

Dusty has some of the best prices you'll find
anywhere, for imports or otherwise. $19 for a
Japanese disc is almost a steal! Japanese CDs
are expensive. It's a fact. You can order from
Japan when the Yen is down, but that's the best
deal you'll get for new product. Depending on
the title/label, and Yen, $17/18 is the cheapest
you're going to get.

>I've heard somlivre.com is a good place to get
>Brazilian CDs, but I can't make heads or tails
>of their website.

Som Livre is a great place to get Brazilian discs.
Same deal as with Japan... when the Real is down
(as it has been; was more than 4 to 1 US$ recently),
order up a storm. Discs can be as low as $6-10
sometimes. A good place to get the Nara boxes!
I paid roughly $75-80 for the first box last year,
and that includes FedEx. If you can't figure out
their website, I'm afraid I can't help you. If
you need help with the Portuguese, use an online
translator as you make each step.

>How would you compare her to, say, Elis Regina?

I wouldn't. ;) They're both great singers, for
different reasons, as someone else tried to point
out. Elis started out a little earlier than Nara,
but ended up going in a completely different
direction, esp. in the 70s.

>Elis is my new favourite singer, as of a week ago.
>I picked up what I think is an early album, called
>"O Bem Do Amor". Most groovy.

Yes, that one's from 1963. Quite early. I agree
with Slipcue ( http://www.slipcue.com ) on this one,
which, by the way, is a great place to go for info
on Brazilian music, and many other styles.

[Nara vs. Elis]
>I'm told her albums are more consistent than
>Regina's overall, but I don't know for sure.

Oh yes, easily! Elis can be hit and miss, and
big miss, esp. later on, but Nara was pretty
much solid from 1964 - 1971 (a stack of LPs).

There's a bar in Kamakura, Japan, that is devoted to Nara Leao! Pictures of her all over the walls and gentle bossa playing all the time!Good cake too! Mr Horiuchi, who runs the place, has released his own compilations of her stuff and has published phenomenal guides to Brazilian music (in Japanese of course). The name of the bar is Cafe Vivement Dimanche, by the way.

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Sunday, 20 April 2003 06:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

The trick is to use your nose, in the way you do for bon vin blanc etc in French. For ao with a wiggle, try and say ow, snap your mouth closed at the end and nasalise the whole process!

Daniel (dancity), Sunday, 20 April 2003 09:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

>Were you implying that you found the box sets $80 for the
>box set on Somlivre.com? If so: wow.

Prices in Brazil are, of course, in Reais (plural of Real),
but since the exchange rate was at around 4 BRL/1 USD, the
total, including FedEx shipping to North America, was about
$75 (USD). The US$ has weakened recently with all the war
bullshit so now it's about 3.2 BRL/1 USD, but this is still
a great buying time. I don't know what Som Livre's prices
on the sets are now, but if they haven't gone up too much,
you'll easily come in at under $100 (USD). The key, when
ordering from anywhere, is to hit the stores when the local
currency is down (relative to yours). This way you get a
nice deal, and are supporting the country's economy. ;-)
I do this with Japan & Brazil mainly, and used to do it
with France before the, now steady, Euro came in...

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 18:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

Nabisco you are of course downloading that Nara record on my behalf as I type, correct?

Somlivre.com has a very paltry selection at the moment; either that or their search function is screwy. They have the second of the two Nara box sets (the one I desire less), don't have the Caetano box, have the Gilberto Gil box which is too expensive even in reals, don't have much in the way of Tom Ze...

That's sort of how I was feeling. This is something I've wanted to buy but don't have the cajones--it's massive. If it's quickly fading from existence then I'll change my opinion, stat. It's not on Dusty Groove's website, don't know if that's any indication of what they have in the store. ..

scott m (mcd), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 20:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

four weeks pass...
>Yeah, what the dill, is this box set out of print?

These boxes (Nara, Caetano, Gilberto, Baden etc.) are only
pressed up in runs of a couple thousand at most. Depending
on demand, it very well could be oop already. Did you check
FNAC Brasil, Lojas Americanas, or other Brasil outlets?

http://fnac.com.br
http://www.americanas.com.br

>if it is you will soon see me running out the doors of
>dusty groove, squealing.

Many CDs in Brasil go in and out of print very quickly.
If something is oop, usually you just have to wait a
while, and the companies will press up some more. With
the boxes, however, who knows? If the first Nara box
is now gone, they may release another 1000 sometime
down the road if there is still demand.

>That's sort of how I was feeling. This is something I've
>wanted to buy but don't have the cajones--it's massive.

It's one of those things where if you want it, you just
have to pay up! :-( That's not a problem if you know
about it when it comes out, and get it cheap from Brasil,
or even order from Dusty (for $140-150) later. If you
end up with an ugly beast like Amazon as your only option,
I feel for you...

>If it's quickly fading from existence then I'll change
>my opinion, stat.

I would say that if you see the 1st Nara box anywhere,
snag it, because it is most likely very close to gone
(for now, at least).

>It's not on Dusty Groove's website, don't know if
>that's any indication of what they have in the store.

It's on their website as "out of stock", but this
doesn't mean it will be back in. Best to email them
and see if they know what their distro is saying,
or at least fill out the email notification form.

yeah '67 is some top-drawer nara leao...I go crazy for her, she's just a phenomenal talent and my favorite bossa nova singer, easily.
i couldn't do without "vento de maio" or "coisas do mundo". but everything she recorded between 1966 and 1971 (at least) is superb.

'carcara' is my fave nara leao song. it was comped on brazilica 2 a long time ago but i cannot for the life of me find my copy of it, so i can't ysi :( found the 7" for this a while ago but didn't buy it cos it was in terrible condition. this song used to make me nuts on the dancefloor.

jaime, Tuesday, 7 February 2006 07:15 (eighteen years ago) link

I'll ysi some stuff in a couple days, I don't have it in front of me at the moment. Dez Anos Depois is great but I recall it being entirely acoustic and pretty much a solo run-through of some classic brazillian songs. the stuff from 67 is more playful, lots of lush orchestration, much faster tempos and some uproarious moments. less reflective, more of a party record, I believe.
