New from the DFA...

So I got a big package of new stuff from the DFA last night, and holy shit... Included was a comp of all the 12"'s, a copy of the Muzik mix, a new Black Dice 12" and a James Murphy DJ set from Colette (has this been released?). (the new Rapture was sposed to be included but they forgot to put it in...)

Anyway, the Colette mix is killing me. Tracklisting:

futurisk - push me/pull you
mu - chair girl
cabaret voltaire - seconds too late w/ green velvet-la la land fk dub
minimal compact - static dancing
pauline murray - animal crazy
naum gabo - red cones
the juan maclean - gmelt
leroy hanghoffer - bathroomboogie
messages
the rapture - i need your love
midnight mike - i am the only person i cannot fight
casiotone for the painfully alone - baby it's you

bathroom boogie = totally classic, and the rest of the hanghofer album is really good too

What's the Black Dice like?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 4 April 2003 15:12 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

haha! i saw murphy spin at APT last night (i was there with detroit ilmer aaron w, who's a dream!) and there was this one great 60s-sounding tropicali-garage song he played and i couldn't figure out what it was, but i just realized it's that minimal compact cut. sweeeeeet

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 4 April 2003 15:12 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

The Black Dice is two songs (I'm listening to it now): The first is "Cone Toaster," which has a nice bass line and beat as a foundation (plus some echoing screeches), but now it's heading into an annoyingly long guitar solo thing. It's still very good. The second is "Endless Happiness (Eye Version)," which is on the Muzik mix (in a truncated version). It's probably my fave Black Dice song. Good mix of the miasmatic sounds and some concrete tones...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 4 April 2003 15:22 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

how's the last song on the mix errr..., mixed?

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 4 April 2003 15:25 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

i think the colette has been released, but i haven't seen it yet (hitting the shops this weekend!). It's actually a 2cd set...

Disc 1:

CD 1 un-mixed by Michel gaubert et Marie Branellec
1.Electronicat "Till I die"
2.Fat Truckers " anorexic robot"
3.Radio 4 "dance to the underground"
4.Playgroup "make it happen" (zongamin remix)
5.Le Tigre "deceptacon" (DFA remix)
6.The Tards "high fire hell"
7.the Soft Pink Truth "promofunk"
8.Gold chains "the game" (clubmix)
9.Colorsound "fly with me"(midnight mike remix)
10.Quarks "I walk" (superpitcher shaffel mix)
11.Chicks on speed feat peaches " guitar anthem"
12.White sport "she's groovy"
13.The Human League "reach ou (I'll be there) instrumental
14.Polyrock "your dragging feet"

Yanc3y, is this a CD? and will it be released commercially?

where is JON WILLIAMS?!?!?!?!?!?!

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 4 April 2003 16:55 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

Actually since October, I think. The tracklisting on mine:

1. The Juan Maclean - "By the Time I Get to Venus"
2. LCD Soundsystem - "Give It Up"
3. The Rapture - "House of Jealous Lovers"
4. Black Dice - "Come Toaster"
5. The Juan Maclean - "You Can't Have It Both Ways"
6. The Rapture - "Silent Morning"
7. LCD Soundsystem - "Losing My Edge"
8. Black Dice - "Endless Happiness"

Maybe this is an incomplete comp, since no "Olio" or "Beat Connection?" I'm not sure...

first few minutes feel like HG! by numbers, would be much lesser song if they'd done an edit. this is partly bcz, as with everything bar I Will Come Back and Jam For Jerry, the lyrics are completely blank, so it works great that the vocals become more explicitly sheer decoration once the synths take off.

enjoying not being able to work out if the drums are pads or carefully produced acoustic kit; looking forward to the CD to see who's credited with cwbll

Unmentioned above, but the The Juan Maclean returned with a single in April:

why on earth did they mix up the ordering on the comp, and, were they ever released as a standalone release as an ep/mini-lp ?
