Dance naked you pansies

As if having a team of songwriters and producers weren't enough, pop stars need to clothe themselves behind a phalanx of backup dancers? Pop needs more rockism dammit.

i thought this was going to be about john mellencamp

has John ever called us pansies? I think not. He should though.

I think more rockists need a phalanx of dancers. I'm disappointed nobody's run with the glory that was Spike Jonze's "Thank You" performance at the MTV Music Awards. Or at least those crazy dancing girls in Missy's recent stuff need to show up in a Queens Of The Stone Age or Vines video or something. Or someone needs to find that guy that worked with Hammer with the weird-ass doily on his head.

Though it disappointing when the artist isn't distinguishable from their phalanx of dancers. Maybe they should wear stilts or be hoisted into the air like Paula Abdul used to be.

I recently saw some Canadian radio performance video clips of the Hidden Cameras and while the songs were great (although they do absulutely SCREAM Belle & Sebastian), I have to say the "choreography" was a real turnoff. This repulsive indie-kid-in-a-body-stocking-and-Mexican-wrestler-mask- flopping-around-ineptly-megatwee-bullshit-dancing has got to stop! Put some effort into your routines, you hideous sacks of shit, you disgust me! Go rent Fosse and old Hullabaloo episodes or the Best of Toni Basil or something. Get it together!

It really bugged me.

IIRC a Monster Magnet and an Aphex Twin video each borrowed from the bling-bling tradition, and featured scantily clad women for no logical reason.

I liked the Monster Magnet one since the video opens like justanother Alice In Chains style video and becomes a Mase parody. But the Aphex Twin one bored me. I'd like to see more drill team style stuff. "Gossip Folks" is a great template.

oh, and I'll second that the work of Bob Fosse and Toni Basil needs to be delved into by more modern videomakers.

Oh Miccio, you're so fine. *hides*

If you are running, it's from the fact that you would reference Micki, immediately reaveling your IGNORANCE about the great work Basil has done as a choreography.

My witty riposte, which will reveal my wisdom, is this: same as it ever was.

as a choreographER. ugh.

oh, and "Daddy's Song" in Head. That's her magic.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 00:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

I've seen her choreography, silly boy. She was in Village of the Giants, you know.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 01:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

yeah if i were a famous pop star, i'd be a total rockist about the dancing. i don't want to surround myself with people who can dance better than me, thats just silly innit?

don't forget Toni Basil's excellent 'choreography' in that cemetary scene in Easy Rider...
