BOTTLING IT
Rising Scandanavian comic rock outfit TURBONEGRO were bottled off-stage in NEW YORK at the weekend (March 30), leaving frontman HANK VON HELVETE hospitalised.
The band were playing their first ever headline show in the US in New York's Mercury Lounge after a tour of the US as support to Queens Of The Stone Age. Three songs in, some of the 500 crowd became restless and threw several bottles at the stage. One of them caught Von Helvete plum on the head. The show was stopped and he was taken to the nearest hospital where doctors put ten stitches in his forehead. He was kept in hospital overnight for observation.
Despite the setback, the band played the second of two New York shows last night (March 31), moving from the Mercury Lounge up to the bigger Bowery Ballroom.

You know you really had me excited that they had their own designer fragrance on the market. Eau de ass, perhaps.

"punk rockers" in not being able to deal with rowdy crowd shocker.

fritz, you're just like my mom! she printed out and tapped that picture to the rearview of my dad's truck when he dropped a piece of china last week.

it's time i admitted it: i am your mom, jess!

just kidding.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 14:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

haha jess how are punk rockers supposed to "deal" with getting concussions from bottles?

Why would anyone buy tickets to a gig and then do that anyway? Turbonegro were the ONLY act that night.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 14:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

well the "smart" thing to do would be to walk off the stage.

Lady if you have to ask...

Scandanavian comic rock outfit...please. Also, it was hardly their "first ever headline show in the US". Oh, those dum dums at NME.

I think I'll probably really hate their audience, not counting all the ILX enthusiasts, of course. People who throw bottles at bands they like, I just don't get it. Were they playing behind a video screen or something?

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 14:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't know, but I saw them last night at BB and I thought it was pretty amazing that whole crowd knew the chorus to "Don't Say Motherfucker, Motherfucker". The lead singer had an Alice Cooper thing going on, cane, makeup, tophat. They should go on tour with Satanicide. "Do you like dolphins? They're beautiful creatures! Do you like words? I hate words! I teach my dolphins to say words. But they're not very smart so they can only say four-letter words, like 'tits'"

Isn't 'Morans' the name of a baseball or american football player?

That means this guy isn't dumb but the person who posted this is? Or maybe it's just me?

mei (mei), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 15:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

Although the exclamation mark should be at the end of the sentence and the all caps for the name isn't great form.

mei (mei), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 15:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

yeah, he's telling the american sports team The Morans to get a brain. that's it.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 15:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

it was worms, not words. he feeds his dolphin worms. and it speaks dolphinese.

mosurock (mosurock), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 15:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

How can you "hate" an entire fan-base (aside from those of racist white-power bullshit bands)? It was only a few disrespectful ass holes who ruined the night for a throng of adoring fans. Some people are just shmucks, you know? I was at the show last night - it was so damn good, and the love ran deep. Oh yeah, I said "deep."

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 15:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ah, I'm just jealous, Jeanne. Both LA shows are sold out! Wish they'd bump it up to a bigger venue here, but time is running out.

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 15:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

That's exactly what they did -- move the show to a bigger venue -- in NYC. Which is what the tour organizers SHOULD have done in the first place. Might have prevented the bottle incident altogether.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 15:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

Where'd that picture come from? Andrew Innes sent me the same thing last week. I laughed my frickin' ass off for an hour.

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 15:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

um, jess, they DID leave the stage. 3 songs in. are you paying any attention at all in this thread?

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 16:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

I got the cd last week - Ally are Turbonegro are a joke band? Or are they 4REAL?

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 16:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

and take out the trash!

jess's mom (Fritz), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 16:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

How do you pronounce their name? Is it TURBO-NEGRO?

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 16:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

My friend's band opened up for them and shyly introduced them as "turbo-naygro" as if it were Spanish. It is in fact "nee-gro".

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 16:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hahahaha Tracer your friend is a wanker.
