I'd give the ol' boy a B+ for effort, but I'd like him to apologize to Salman Rushdie first.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 13:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

agreed Alex.

He already has. Look it up.

Just in time for the In My Tribe reissue.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 14:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

I really like the album "Peace Train" was offa...wasn't it, uh, Tea for the Tillerman?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 14:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

salman ru5hsdie to thread

james (james), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 14:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, Tea for the Tillerman, v. good album. In My Tribe has the 10,000 Maniacs "Peace Train" cover that was pulled from pressings after Stevens commented on the fatwa. Not sure if it was put back or not (can't imagine it's been repressed since).

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 14:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

god, what an awful, awful song

Cue the residents of Saddam H's Government Health Farm - "If I should ever lose my legs..." etc

dave q, Tuesday, 1 April 2003 14:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

once again an artist who's music has gotten me laid. Im sure Cat/Yusuf would be proud.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 14:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

Actually, "Peace Train" is off of Teaser and the Firecat, which isn't nearly as good. Mainly cause it has "Peace Train", "Morning Has Broken" and "Moonshadow", the three worst Cat hits on it.

Pedantic Cat Fan (Arthur), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 14:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

I knew there was a "tea" in there.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 14:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

was the harold and maude soundtrack ever released?

was the harold and maude soundtrack ever released?

No.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 14:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ah yes, Teaser and the Firecat...thanks!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 14:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

Devoted as I am to In My Tribe in its proper original form (i.e. wonky tape dub from Tim C. with photocopied liner), that album is probably much better off without Natalie's sort of scary approach to "Peace Train." ("Ride on the PEACE TERRAIN!")

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 15:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

its april 1 right?

girl scout heroin (iamamonkey), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 20:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

Jello Biafra has said many a ridiculous, borderline obnoxious thing in his spoken-word career. It is all made up for by his imitation of what "Peace Train" would sound like as speed metal.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 01:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

I've never heard this song (all I've heard is Wild World, random crap my ex-girlfriend used to play and his hokey shit in Harold & Maude). But now I've got "Love Train" in my head. They should re-release that. Actually, they should re-release "Love Rollercoaster" both the Ohio Express AND the RHCP versions.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 01:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

I dunno, the RHCP version fell a bit flat for me. Spot on about the original and "Love Train" too, though. I don't think I've ever heard "Peace Train" either!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 01:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

all covers should feature kazoo solos.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 01:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

you mean the ohio PLAYERS.

LOL the Ohio Express' "Love Rollercoaster"! MUST HEAR! As well as the Ohio Players' "Sweeter Than Sugar"!

A Radio Picture (Rrrickey), Sunday, 7 January 2007 21:36 (seventeen years ago) link

Bizarrely, I have heard the entire new Yusuf Islam album. It's not as awful as I would have expected, but that praise is about as faint as it gets.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Sunday, 7 January 2007 21:40 (seventeen years ago) link

I was wondering about that new CD but couldn't be bothered to make a thread about it. Tell us more.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Sunday, 7 January 2007 22:18 (seventeen years ago) link

Well, it's a pretty solid AAA effort, I guess. I mean it's got some catchy tunes and the production is ok. One of the songs gets stuck in my head from time to time. There could be a lot of worse things to be stuck listening to.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Sunday, 7 January 2007 22:20 (seventeen years ago) link

I could have bought Yusuf "An Other Cup" today but chickened out and got Tea For The Tillerman instead. So far I think I like it better than Teaser and the Firecat, the only other one I've heard.

I've always liked the way his voice sounds on lower notes.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Thursday, 11 January 2007 07:33 (seventeen years ago) link

I wish "Tea for the Tillerman" (the track) was longer. It's sooo great for that minute or so.

Tape Store (Tape Store), Thursday, 11 January 2007 08:10 (seventeen years ago) link

Totally! His vocals sound almost like early Bowie on that. They've got that as the end music for the Ricky Gervais show Extras.

Ok, now that I've finished listening I like this about 10 times as much as Teaser and the Firecat. There's a certain style he does on Teaser that annoys the hell out of me and there's none of that on Tillerman. I do like "The Wind" though and this record makes me want to give that one another chance.

was the harold and maude soundtrack ever released?

You can get every song from that plus 5 more on Footsteps in The Dark: Greatest Hits, Vol. 2. I'll probably get that next. Tillerman has 3 of the H&M songs.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Thursday, 11 January 2007 08:27 (seventeen years ago) link

I got "An Other Cup" for Christmas, and it's good. Very good, even -- not earth-shattering, but in no way intended to be, and at least three very memorable songs on it. The best part is that his voice is still there, and they haven't autotuned it all to hell.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 11 January 2007 16:35 (seventeen years ago) link

How's the Youssou N'Dour track?
