i never got into him - when his popularity was at it's tiny, tiny peak was when i was most opposed to the euro-classicist heavy metal thing.

but then, there's that tape of him yelling on a plane. so CLASSIC!!!

Is there a sound file of his tantrum available for download. That would be awe inspiring!

Er, an mpeg file, that is.

I once read a review which said he played the guitar like he was playing a typewriter. This seems apt.

What...like every 10th chord ends with a carriage return?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 12:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes, his playing is like typewriting. Every note is a new letter in an exciting tale!

Uh.

Yeah.
Dudley Moore.

When I'm in the right mood, I dig some of the debut, but screw that guy.

No, not Dudley Moore. Arthus WAS the worst movie of all time (Clockwatchers) but hey. At least he was durnk. Drunk. Or acted drunk.

"I like how he puts Yngwie J Malmstein on all his signature pedals, so as we don't confuse him with all the other Yngwie Malmsteins." - Nigel Tufnel

I rewatched Arthur last year for the first time since it came out. What's that 20 years? Anyway, there were a couple surprisingly funny bits. Still a bad movie but at least it made me laugh a couple times.

Really??

I really can't scoff at anyone who can play with that kind of technique. That said, I do not intend to buy this.

Sundar, Friday, 10 April 2009 16:03 (fifteen years ago) link

obviously classic. i think the real question here is, if you unleash his fury today, is it more or less furious than if you had unleashed it twenty-five years ago?

eleven years pass...

That 'Live in Leningrad' Yngwie live video from '91 is pretty darn classic on many levels. The intro section of them going around in that boxy car is one of the funniest things I have seen this year. The concert is pretty darn good too and fun to watch just seeing the Russian kids go batsxxt.

The stage moves of the keyboard player are totally classic too.

one year passes...

About thirty years ago, when I was a teenager, someone bought me a cassette compilation called "Guitar Greats" when with this on. What a banger! I don't know anything else by Malmsteen or have any interest in finding out, but:

Somehow managed to watch this entire Yngwie interview that just dropped from Rick Beato, it's good! Yngwie looks great and comes off a lot more generous and funny than his reputation had me expecting

Never realized he was such a giant person, only reference was old clips of Alcatrazz I've seen but I guess he was barely not a teenager at the time
