Marilyn Manson: Classic or Dud?

Well?

Ally, Saturday, 30 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh really,....yawn! While I'd much rather suffer through his brand of shamelessly derivative juvenalia that today's current crop of mookish, zinjanthropin rap-metal and whistle-headed teenybopper cheese whiz, Marilyn's schtick was old hat from the get-go. The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Alice Cooper, Kiss, the Misfits, the Plasmatics, Alien Sex Fiend, GG Allin, Ministry and about nineteen-dozen other superior bands got their first and did it better. I'm not saying he's not a bright guy, but please.....the word "classic" should never be uttered in the same sentence as Marilyn Manson.

alex in nyc, Saturday, 30 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gratuitous violence.

Sterling Clover, Saturday, 30 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

His book is hilarious. A must-read!

tarden, Saturday, 30 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Actually ghost-written by Neil Strauss....who also ghost wrote THE DIRT, "by" Motley Crue.

alex in nyc, Saturday, 30 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

camp classic, fashion dud

Geoff, Saturday, 30 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the weird thing about living in the uk is that you never actually hear marilyn manson. obviously its not top of the 'weird in the uk' list, but still. anyway, i've only ever heard about 30 seconds of marilyn manson in a record chain store. i was excpecting something metal, but it sounded like bowie to me. this may have been something off mechanical animals. i don't know...

gareth, Saturday, 30 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Classic, for the simple reason that anyone who can outrage an entire nation (well, ok, can outrage a small yet vocal and easily outraged section of an entire nation's population) simply by recycling old Adam Ant records has to be doing something right.

jamesmichaelward, Saturday, 30 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think Strauss had a hand in the sphincter that is the Dave Navarro biography as well.

Well, let's see - rises from the murky depths of Florida, goes out to shock in a Kiss-like fashion (since he obviously can't keep up with the death metal / biology freaks that define the Floridian experience), picks a really obvious cover song to browbeat the masses with (oh, some of them LIKE to be abused, OK - sing that part really spooky like, thanks, Brian), hits an interesting sonic nerve with "Beautiful People" (assuming you tune him out in the verses & pay attention to the other stuff), attaches tired Nazi imagery & his flabby, pale, sub-Howard-Stern-esque ass to said song during an MTV performance, does a switch-up & turns into an androgynous Bowie-esque glam freak (and does so quite well, I might add), and then reverts back to Mr. Scary Man (going so far as to reclaim "Beautiful People" for a lesser diatribe) to reclaim the meat of his fanbase that jumped ship when he got REALLY freaky. Also - worked with Sneaker Pimps (?!?) for a song on that god-awful _Spawn_ movie soundtrack. Also - allowed Rose McGowan to affix herself onto him & parasitically absorb his pseudo-freaky-deaky vibe for her own personal gain (which she needed, after those Akari movies & _Jawbreaker_). Also - gave a guitarist fellatio on stage with parents watching AKA trying too hard.

I'm scared more of the Lords of Acid. Or the Genitorturers. Or Nashville Pussy. He does give good soundbytes every so often. But Trent pushes more buttons without saying a damn thing. And sounds better doing it. D to the U to the D.

Poison bubblegum. Jim Foetus' pretensions recyled at the level of The Sweet. Therefore purely, wonderfully trash classic, at a level beyond Kylie.

as media personality...classic.

as rock music: not classic, but occasionally entertaining.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 11 September 2004 08:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Funny how the tracklist for his upcoming best of reads like a Britney Greatest Hits for the alternateens. But better.

I'm American, Saturday, 11 September 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i love manson, dont care for his music at all though. saw him live once and he was well, crap. not shocking or crazy or even good musically.

splooge (thesplooge), Saturday, 11 September 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

The big test is, of course, closing your eyes while the video's on and just listening to the music. Manson fails that test Every. Single. Time. He occasionally comes up with (shoplifts) a half-decent image; the last one was the monkey Pope in I forget which video, and the last one before that was him riding a pig in the "Sweet Dreams" video. So they're pretty few and far between, and the music always needs to be either heavier or just have a better drum sound or more effects on the vocals or something, but it always sounds like something any one of his teenage fans could have made. Fizzling, sputtering dud.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Sunday, 12 September 2004 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic for Mechanical Animals alone.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 12 September 2004 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll second that. His shining moment.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 12 September 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah, that album's crap too, it's just multicolored crap instead of monochrome crap.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Monday, 13 September 2004 00:14 (twenty-one years ago)

alex in nyc OTM! There's simply nothing more to debate after his first post. I sort of liked "The dope show" and that's the nicest thing I can say about Manson.

daavid (daavid), Monday, 13 September 2004 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah, that album's crap too, it's just multicolored crap instead of monochrome crap.

I'm listening to it now and it's one of the best sellout moves ever! Michael Beinhorn finally had a reason to exist!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 13 September 2004 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

_Mechanical Animals_ is great for the first four tracks ALONE and those aren't the only good songs on the album.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Monday, 13 September 2004 01:33 (twenty-one years ago)

His earlier singles are all sort of the same and really good. "Sweet Dreams" or "Beautiful People" should have been on the best of the '90s poll.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 13 September 2004 02:33 (twenty-one years ago)

god seeing sweet dreams the first time on MTV was grebt.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 13 September 2004 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i like his soft cell and eurythmics covers. his david bowie remake (i cant even remember which song) was terrible though.

splooge (thesplooge), Monday, 13 September 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

"Mechanical Animals" or "Disassociative" vie for the honor of being his best song ("The Dope Show" and "The Beautiful People" vie for best single honors).

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Monday, 13 September 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought his cover of "Sweet Dreams" is crapola.

third-rate Alice Cooper

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 21:14 (nineteen years ago)

love him as well. mechanical animals has always been my favorite but portrait is great too. antichrist was a good album, and holy wood has a few great tracks but is mostly spotty. grotesque was pretty bad all the way through...here's to hoping that he's back on track with the new one.

Reatards Unite, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 21:15 (nineteen years ago)

lol he calls his new 19 yr old gf his "twin." YOU ARE 38 AND UGLY, BRIAN.

chaki, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 21:36 (nineteen years ago)

http://glosslip.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/04/brianandrachel.JPG

“I’ve found my double, my twin, with my new girlfriend, Evan Rachel Wood,” Manson, 38, tells France’s Le Parisien newspaper.”She’s 19 and certainly that’s very young,” he added, “but that’s not a problem for me. She likes the same things as me. She understands I like to get up when night falls and go to sleep at dawn.”

chaki, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 21:38 (nineteen years ago)

So so so SO fucking dud.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 21:47 (nineteen years ago)

“I’ve found a hot piece of teenage gash with my new girlfriend, Evan Rachel Wood,” Manson, 38, tells France’s Le Parisien newspaper.

jim, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 21:51 (nineteen years ago)

When marilyn mansion left high school his new girlfriend wasn't even born. I wonder what the parents of Rachel Wood think about this relationship, re age gap.

djmartian, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 22:02 (nineteen years ago)

She is an actress, yes.

In this new song is... underwhelming. If it is really supposed to be the new "Bela Lugosi's Dead," then that's a sad (and possibly accurate) commentary on the modern state of Goth music.

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 22:06 (nineteen years ago)

lolz@ "modern state". Marilyn's been humping 80s goth's corpse since his career began. That industrial/goth music culture of confrontation and shock tactics that spread across the late 70s through the early 90s (NIN probably being the death knell) has these days been completely absorbed, at least visually and superficially, by mainstream pretty-boy. In a more substantial sense - in terms of actual sonics and production methods - the current noise underground is basically the equivalent of the 80s industrial scene: aggro, clangorous, interested in damaged and/or reconfigured music technology, etc.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 22:14 (nineteen years ago)

arrgh should read "mainstream prettyboy gothpunks"

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 22:15 (nineteen years ago)

evan rachel wood was in some movie i think.

Thirteen.

marmotwolof, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 23:25 (nineteen years ago)

"The song was written because I had been reading the book Lolita and it was very close with Evan Rachel Wood, who’s now my girlfriend, and she came to visit me one day wearing these glasses like Stanley Kubrick in Lolita and part of it because of her sense humour and knowing that people would make their comments about our relationship because she’s younger than me and when I saw her wearing those glasses I had to write a song about it and that’s the way I wrote most of the record."

marmotwolof, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 23:33 (nineteen years ago)

Well, yes, that was sort of the point of the comment. The Goth subculture, Ned not withstanding, is pretty lame right now. Anyway, Gothic and industrial veered onto fairly different paths somewhere around, I believe, Sisters of Mercy (whom I love, don't get me wrong). They certainly retained elements of each other, and Manson has utilized sounds and iconography from both, but by this point there is a definite difference between the "look at me I'm so gloomy" Gothic sound and the "I'm going to fuck your eardrum with a cheese grater" industrial noise sound.

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 23:41 (nineteen years ago)

(And for the record, I say classic for Marilyn, if for no other reason than the cyber-glam masterpiece that was Mechanical Animals. His other stuff is enjoyable to varying degrees [except for Golden Age], but pretty much all of them implode about halfway-three quarters of the way through. Mechanical Animals is the only thing he's done where his ambition actually reached the running time.)

Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 00:01 (nineteen years ago)

otm.

he's had some great singles though!

MRZBW, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 00:19 (nineteen years ago)

You could probably make a pretty great Marilyn Manson best-of compilation, even a two-disc one. The one that's out right now (Lest We Forget) isn't it, but it might be an interesting project for someone who isn't as lazy as I am.

Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 00:19 (nineteen years ago)

yes, it's the play button on a Cream compilation!!!

The reason why I think that is, upper mississippi sh@kedown, is because I initially held off on talking like this, but it's been a week, and I've learned to live with the news that Manson is an abuser. Thus, I'm happy to go back and listen to his best work, and enjoy it as a work of art. Again, I separate the art from the artist, and even with artists who I think are all-around terrible as human beings and musicians -- 6ix9ine, most of all -- I separate the music from the creator, and I see what's in the music rather than the personal life.

I wonder what was the final nail in the coffin for Trent Reznor? Was it just that he wanted to sober up and saw him as a bad influence to be around or is did he witness something that made him go “fuck this shit, I’m out of here”.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 11 February 2021 04:19 (five years ago)

he's said one of the things that really soured their relationship was manson's autobiography having the story of them assaulting a woman together, which he maintains was completely fabricated, but it's been generally implied by him that manson's drug & alcohol issues were a big part of it too

they did briefly somewhat reconcile around 2000 where manson appeared in the starfuckers, inc. video and performed it with nin once then, but then they were back to insulting each other in the press before long
