I suspect some songs on Premiata Forneria Macroni's "Per Un Amico" would hit the spot.Robert Wyatt's "Rock Bottom" perhaps? Might be too druggy?
Oh, and Geir, have you heard Mr Bungle's "California"? I would think you'd love at least some of the songs on it, like "Pink Cigarette".

Allmusic.com sez "Funky Poodle" is by Wild Horses and "Mama Says" is by Brian Wilson (or the Beach Boys or somebody.) I never heard either of them, but back in skinny-ties days in Michigan we used to love those first two Fab Poodles albums -- esp. their small early '79 hit "Mirror Star" (which may or may not have climbed higher in *Billboard than the Euclid Beach Band did.)

"Funky Poodle" by Wild Horses -- hands down classic.
"Mama Sez" was done by Love Affair... http://richspina.com/History/chap04/loveaffair1.jpg
