I'll stick with albums rather than songs...

I suspect some songs on Premiata Forneria Macroni's "Per Un Amico" would hit the spot.
Robert Wyatt's "Rock Bottom" perhaps? Might be too druggy?

Oh, and Geir, have you heard Mr Bungle's "California"? I would think you'd love at least some of the songs on it, like "Pink Cigarette".

This one is easy. The band that Geir has not heard that has the highest Geir factor is the Millennium. Placed in the same rock'n'roll cannon as Sargeant Peppers and Pet Sounds and beloved by classists, everywhere. It is also very melodic. I win! : - D

Allmusic.com sez "Funky Poodle" is by Wild Horses and "Mama Says" is by Brian Wilson (or the Beach Boys or somebody.) I never heard either of them, but back in skinny-ties days in Michigan we used to love those first two Fab Poodles albums -- esp. their small early '79 hit "Mirror Star" (which may or may not have climbed higher in *Billboard than the Euclid Beach Band did.)

There is a lot of underground American powerpop that I'd probably love if I just got to hear it. Trouble is that they are way to difficult to discover, although I have discovered Cotton Mather and Brad Jones that way.
