What a great song. I hope dude's album blows the hell up. Augurs well for new OutKast too.

It does get me, nearly every time. But I'm a complete sucker for post-"Genius of Love" type hooks (cf "Jenny from the Block").

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 6 March 2003 20:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

I presume this isn't a cover of Korn, then.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 March 2003 21:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

no but it makes the same lame joke, except now in a superfun dirty-ATL bounce style.

Neudonym, Thursday, 6 March 2003 21:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ah well, that has to be an improvement. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 March 2003 21:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think Killer Mike's album might be better than Stankonia. One of the tracks is "Rap Is Dead," and another is "Sex, Drugs, Rap and Roll."

Neudonym, Thursday, 6 March 2003 21:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

"All 4 U" is a pretty cool song too.

adam west (adamwest), Thursday, 6 March 2003 21:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

Great song, great video! Beats 50 Cent by a country mile(oh,shit.I really am not trying to start anything. Just one man's opinion.).

Scott Seward, Thursday, 6 March 2003 21:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

Also, the way "Akshon" flirts with Outkast's "The Whole World" throughtout the entire song, and then near the end, uses part of the music itself is just wonderful.

adam west (adamwest), Thursday, 6 March 2003 21:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

best thing about "ADIDAS" is he actually mentions adidas shoes as well as "all day I dream about sex". dual meaning=great songwriting.

Neudonym, Thursday, 6 March 2003 21:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

second best thing:
KM about his audience: "I want them to know that this guy is totally in love with poor people -- Black, Latino, White, the sick, the shut-out -- and their plight. This music is their music and I want them to know that my album is reflective of the love that I feel for those people. The flip side is that I want this album to serve as a warning for those who ain't really MC'ing: that your jerseys and your big ass chains ain't gonna protect you. It's a new day coming."

Neudonym, Thursday, 6 March 2003 21:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

Common II: Electric Bugaloo? (Dear god, why did I just type that...)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 March 2003 21:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

I enjoyed "Akshon" for a long time, and so did everyone I played it for, but I think it was in that stodgy white-people-who-listen-to-outkast way. Then one day, I was playing it at a friend's house and one of his guests really started digging it. "Daaaaaamn, what is this shit? This is hot!" I started hearing it differently. This DOES bounce. The "Daaaaaamn, this is hot!" effect is what keeping hip hop fresh is all about to me. I haven't heard this, but I can't wait to.

Adam A. (Keiko), Thursday, 6 March 2003 22:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

so is this out already? The "all day I dream about sex" acronym is *way* older than KM and Korn both (I still love it tho).

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 6 March 2003 23:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

it comes out next tuesday, I think.

Hypothetical Member of the Listening Public who is Deeply Curious about Killer Mike's Sexual Preference: "Hey Killer Mike, do you engaging in sex with men? Why or why not?"

Killer Mike: "None of that, but the female genatalia's where it's at/ I'm a man and i demand a woman for that act/ Personal preference cos i use the law of nature as a reference/ no i dont ever recall seein a man turn up pregnant"

HMLPDCKMSP: "Oh. Thanks for clearing that up, then."

EC, Friday, 7 March 2003 00:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

There's something sort of hilarious about how he goes back and forth, like "homosexuality is strange / but this is just my personal preference and in no way a slight to homosexuality / although homosexuality is unnatural and counterintuitive / of course I only speak for myself and my subjective opinion ..."

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 7 March 2003 00:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

Since when did he turn into Paul Barman?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 March 2003 00:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

HMLPDCKMSP: "Are you sure you weren't dreaming about sex while you watched that Blue Man Group performance in Vegas, Killer Mike?"

EC, Friday, 7 March 2003 00:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

do you engaging in sex with men?

I'm pretty sure there's a best selling t-shirt in Tokyo with this slogan printed on it.

EC, Friday, 7 March 2003 00:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

Killer Mike sounds 100 times better then he did on "The Whole World" which I think is b/c he sounds more like Big Boi.

bnw (bnw), Friday, 7 March 2003 02:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

EC, i'm pretty sure that the line you quote is big boi, not killer mike.

brains (cerybut), Friday, 7 March 2003 03:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

In that case, the conversation would be:

"Hey Big Boi, your musical partner often wears a woman's wig, along with some extremely flamboyant outfits. Should we draw any conclusions about your relationship?"

"None of that, but the female genitalia's where it's at, etc."

EC, Friday, 7 March 2003 13:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

who does all the production for outkast/killer mike? it sounds good 2 my ears

juiceboxxx (juiceboxxx), Friday, 7 March 2003 21:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

Just wanted to add that the single is indeed great, and I can't wait to get the record. Sounds like it'll be excellent.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 7 March 2003 21:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

So I got the record and there are some really amazing songs here. As Adam West mentioned above, "Akshon," which subtly samples "The Whole World," "A.D.I.D.A.S.," which has such a fun bounce and "All 4 U," sentimental without being sappy, are all great. I'm halfway through so far, but this disc sounds like a total keeper.

re: outkast/killer mike production - "earthtone iii".

I like the album quite a bit too, it seems to be coming from a similar place as the Majesticons album, though without the very obvious layer of make-believe on beauty party. Especially when he screams stuff like "fuck your hip-hop / this is rap and roll" while wearing a bambaata t-shirt. Also good to hear Andre 3000 expanding on the Neptunes production vibe (see "U Know I Luv U").

I want this, too.

it didnt do much for me on first few hearings, but i'm starting to like it more (thank you ILM, i'm easily-swayed)

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 11 May 2003 15:42 (twenty years ago) link

someone said this track was homophobix, or something.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 11 May 2003 15:43 (twenty years ago) link

Alex Needham said it in the NME.

Nick H, Sunday, 11 May 2003 18:05 (twenty years ago) link

I guess they're referring to:

None of that but the female genatalia's where it's at
I'm a man and I demand a WO-man for that act
Personal preference cause I use the law of nature as a reference
No I don't ever recall seein' a man turn up pregnant

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 11 May 2003 18:14 (twenty years ago) link

thats pretty dumb, why would he say that? < /naive>

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 11 May 2003 18:15 (twenty years ago) link

i'm sad this hasn't blown up. it's hard to be excited about hip-hop albums when you feel like the radio's playing the single because the record company said so. i hope joe buddens doesn't fizzle like this.

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 11 May 2003 21:47 (twenty years ago) link

I soured on this a little bit, but now I've come back to it in a big way. All the tracks get more and more nihilistic, until you really fear for the man's future, and then you realize he just doesn't care what happens to him. Hee hee, that's cool.
