These threads really aren't any good.

Adam A. (Keiko), Sunday, 23 February 2003 05:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

it's just taking sides with a new wig

minna (minna), Sunday, 23 February 2003 05:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

Destiny's Child are great, but they never did a Funny Girl tribute album.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 23 February 2003 05:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

Destiny's Child. I really hate the Supremes.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 23 February 2003 05:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

destiny's child piss me off, but at least they don't completely butcher decent songs.

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 23 February 2003 07:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

What songs did The Supremes butcher?

Justin Block, Sunday, 23 February 2003 07:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

every song which diana ross sings.

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 23 February 2003 07:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

Destiny's Child lost members that didn't matter, and then released the best songs of their young career. The Supremes lost Florence Ballard, and released "Love Child."

Make of that what you will.

The Supremes made a long string of glorious singles, and the albums are much better than you might expect. I could say pretty much the same about Destiny's Child, and this is a close call for me, but I'd have to say "shortish string" and it's the number of great tunes that edges it for the Supremes, for me.

OK, I have a fundamental problem with these "taking sides" threads, ESP. considering the recent freaking RASH of really annoying ones.

But... this posits an interesting choice. They are superficially quite similar. Powerful females in a genre dominated by wimpy lollipop-suckling dollybirds. The tension between group and diva-leader turning solo artist. Intelligent lyrics addressing topical issues likely to be relevant to their listeners' lives (is the material girl vs feckless boy in Bills Bills Bills really that much different from the material girl in I'm Living In Shame?)

I really can't even begin to choose between them, but at least this is an interesting comparison to ponder.

the supremes never released an album that i could listen to all the way through (let alone call one of my favs evah) < /rockist>

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 23 February 2003 16:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

May they all drown in bubbling vats of their own sickly excrement.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 23 February 2003 17:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

the supremes always got first choice of the best songs from motown, beyonce isn't equal to the motown songwriters but i think she's a better singer than ms. ross especially when she isn't trying to show us her range.

keith (keithmcl), Sunday, 23 February 2003 18:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

it's probably no conincidence that beyonce suddenly got "bad" when she decided to wholly write her own songs and that this was when every rock crit got a hardon for d.c.

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 23 February 2003 18:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

Supremes. This isn't even a contest, lame-ass thread.

frank p. jones (frank p. jones), Sunday, 23 February 2003 18:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

The Supremes. I think you Destiny's Child fans are all making a big mistake.

Rockist Scientist, Sunday, 23 February 2003 18:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

this isn't financial plannin here folx

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 23 February 2003 18:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

jess you only understand true soul when you have put it in the right order

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 23 February 2003 18:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

supremes...though my only hesitation is that so many of their songs are about the same thing - you broke-a my heart. So they'd never win against the various Alpha Males of Motown for me, but they definitely trounce Beyonce and the gang (I originally assumed her name was pronounced Beee-ounce. How wrong I was).

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 23 February 2003 23:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

all those supremes songs would've sounded way better had they been sung by the four tops.

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

....or had they been sung by Bad Company.
