Where are the Maytals (or is that "Bam Bam")? Itals, Heptones, Culture, Pioneers, Melodians, Burning Spear, Black Uhuru?

I don't even recognize 80% of these songs, so I guess I'm out of the loop. I listen mainly to reggae and rocksteady from the late 60s to the early 80s, when the songs really mattered.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 14:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm no expert (by a looooooooooooooooooong shot), but as far as I'm concerned, you should include:

"Solidarity" by Black Uhuru
"Ku Klux Klan" by Steel Pulse

Sabres of Paradise - "Wilmot"
The SLickers - "Johnny Too Bad"

That thread is useful; I've long had trouble matching up what I love at the club with what I recognize on the VP compilations...

DJ Still N, would you mind attaching artists to the above?

Gawd, saying you want to decide on the best reaggae songs is like saying you want to decide on the best classical music. There are so many bloody genres within the genre. Do you want to display a range: ska, rockers, steppers, dub, 70s golden era classics, 80s early digital dancehall, 90s ragga, recent dancehall, recent roots, recent conscious dancehall....etc. etc.? The first thing I'd suggest you do is avoid bloody "Chi Chi Mon." TOK jhas made lotsa songs. Why you need that one, well, I've made my point about that many times here.

Correction: Insert any Island era Bob Marley compilation tracklisting, that would be.

oh cybele, chi chi man is an incredible record, much as i hate to say it...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 13:45 (twenty years ago) link

I know I know. On the thread about song lyrics I was gonna mention said TOK tune...I tend to find myself singing that and wanting to kick myself. That and "Mi nah want nah chi chi man no." I just would have a problem playing them out.

heard a reggae cover of "Telstar" - as "Red Rose" - on a pirate tape. so beautiful my band couldn't help borrowing (hehe) the idea. who cut this record? it has been a bitch to research, since both keywords are so ubiquitous in Jamaican music. anyone know?

Culture--Two Sevens Clash

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 14:47 (seventeen years ago) link

one year passes...

The Various Artists Mojo Magazine compilation that came with the issue with Bob Marley on the cover is really freaking spectacular. I started to think I'd been listening to the wrong reggae artists all along. Then I went to a UB40 gig Fri. night and low and behold they played this whole Mojo comp over the P.A. before any bands came on. It was fantastic.

Bimble, Sunday, 12 August 2007 21:35 (sixteen years ago) link

Now my friend told me the Culture album is not to be missed. I haven't heard the whole album.

sleeve, Sunday, 12 August 2007 21:38 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah I told my friend that I'd heard the title track, right, cause they said Peel liked that one a lot, and he said "oh that's not the best track on the album" so I am going to try the album.

But christ, this Mojo reggae sampler is dreamy. Horace Andy = "Steal away girl" right isn't it him or someone else singing? Oh my god! That shit is the DEAL!

Bimble, Sunday, 12 August 2007 21:41 (sixteen years ago) link

Hell, it's not Horace Andy at all is it? Sorry.

Bimble, Sunday, 12 August 2007 21:42 (sixteen years ago) link

You want proto-Specials, baby we got it all on this comp.!

Probably in one of those lists up there already but if not how about The Best Dressed Chicken in Town by Dr. Alimantado or News Flash by a relatively down to earth, though still excellent, Lee Scratch Perry. Or the wonderfully weird, lo-Fi meisterpiece Free Up The Prisoners also by the genius Scratch Perry. Anyway, of course this is all scratching (no pun intended)the surface. There's literally a million candidates. Enjoy!
