WHOS A BETTER BAND DEAD KENNEDYS OR BLACK FLAG??

Punker 420, Tuesday, 11 February 2003 00:24 (twenty-three years ago)

aka, if ILM and Google existed in 1981.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 00:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Is this a real question?

J (Jay), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 00:42 (twenty-three years ago)

!¡!¡

gygax!, Tuesday, 11 February 2003 00:42 (twenty-three years ago)

A LOT OF PEOPLE THINK BLACK FLAG IS THIS UNTOUCHABLE BAND BUT I THINK IT REALLY IS AN OPEN QUESTION. IF YOU LEAVE THE LAST DK ALBUM OUT OF THE QUESTION I THINK THEY ARE BETTER THAN THE SUM TOTAL OF BF'S STUFF

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 00:47 (twenty-three years ago)

use other font sizes please.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 11 February 2003 00:51 (twenty-three years ago)

not only are you wrong but you haven't seen this either

gygax!, Tuesday, 11 February 2003 00:52 (twenty-three years ago)

The Flag.

Love'em both, but I'd probably have to go with the DK's.

Depends who I feel more hatred towards, Jello or Hank. It changes daily.
Otto sings Six Pack to himself: Black Flag.
Jello molestes Nardwuar with a marker: DK.
Hank gets blown away on Win Ben Stiens money: DK
Jello rambles on and on to himself: BF.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 04:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate Hank and Jello too, but at least there was a Black Flag before Hank. (though I guess there's a DK after Jello too)

I mean fuck, Nervous Breakdown and shit!

Kris (aqueduct), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 05:53 (twenty-three years ago)

As far as musical talent goes DK. Jello can be a bit grating but his old tunes are pretty fucking hilarious, if not a bit frightening.
I don't even know where to start with ol'rolly, I have enjoyed his books more than his music.

Hayden (Hayden), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 07:13 (twenty-three years ago)

DK, DK, DK, DK. Even against pre-Rollins Flag. And the DKs put out a number of excellent, *different* albums. Not many punk bands changed as much as the DKs, except for the standard "good" to "suck" transition.

Dave Fischer, Tuesday, 11 February 2003 07:28 (twenty-three years ago)

DK without a shadow of a doubt! BF OK but no match, not even close. Was gutted to hear that the DK's were gigging last year WITHOUT Biafra. Apparently, and this comes from a very cynical old school punker mate who was just as hesitant at seeing them for the same reason, they were the best live band he'd ever seen, and this guy is a gig vetran. Top flight musicianship. Wish I'd been there if only to see those boys play their guitars.

Allen, Tuesday, 11 February 2003 09:25 (twenty-three years ago)

it's a bit of a yin yang thing really. DKs are pretty positive whereas Black Flag are utterly nihilistic and negative. I tend to listen to black flag more often. it always seemed like they needed to make that music. much more cathartic.

simon 803 (simon 803), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 12:41 (twenty-three years ago)

The DKs were a comedy band, so I don't see how a comparison can be made.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 13:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 14:59 (twenty-three years ago)

And Black Flag weren't a comedy band?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 15:04 (twenty-three years ago)

the flag by a long way.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 15:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I LIKED the DKs. But c'mon, they were a cheap laugh at best. Most of Black Flag's material still holds up (even though much of it gave me a cheap laugh). The DKs are a band you outgrow, like the Violent Femmes.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 15:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Beyond the superhuge egos of Rollins and Biafra, the DK's were simply a bette BAND. Not virtuosos, but they played with more STYLE than Black Flag -- which is not to say Greg Ginn was a crap guitarist (he's entirely original), but the DK's were a solid, locked UNIT!
