Trevor Horne Production - classic or dud?

inspired by some recent disagreements round the Vicarage concerning T.A.T.U., do you think Trevor Horne is any good as a producer?

he was before he added the e on ;)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 31 January 2003 12:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

there's not much to rave about with the T.A.T.U. production it would seem, not the single anyway (havent heard the Smiths cover)...sure its got the hook and everything is in the right place but it sounds too automated 'american teen heartbreak drama series theme' i think

stevem (blueski), Friday, 31 January 2003 12:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

I loved his work with Dollar.Classic 80's bubblegum. His recent productions with T.A.T.U & Leann Rhimes are a bit bland.

Paul R (paul R), Friday, 31 January 2003 13:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

There was just a "Must we throw this filth at our pop kids?" piece on t.A.t.U. on the ITN lunchtime news! Richard and Judy are campaigning against them on a 'when child psychologists go bad' ticket.

Horn's production work on Frankie GTH and Propaganda (and Dollar and Grace Jones and AON and and) is the best pop production OF ALL TIME! The TATU single is excellent but he's not being showy behind the desk any more.

Classic! He even made Yes sound great!

scott pl. (scott pl.), Friday, 31 January 2003 14:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

Horn. OK. ha ha ha.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 31 January 2003 14:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

i still have a 'guilty' love for Seal's 'Crazy' too

stevem (blueski), Friday, 31 January 2003 15:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

80s stuff (and through early 90s maybe): lots of it is great, great, great!

Grace Jones, Slave to the Rhythm = pinnacle

Didn't Horn produce ABC's "The Lexicon of Love?" That album had a few stellar moments, "The Look of Love," Many Happy Returns," and "Poison Arrow." The hilarious, broadway-like manner in which Martin Fry communicates with the background singers on the "The Look of Love" was a major reason I listened to that particular track just about every single day for a couple months last year.

If a few means 10, Theodore, I completely agree with you!

Andy K (Andy K), Friday, 31 January 2003 16:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

But maybe he means the CD version. ;-)

Dr C in fine style: All of My Heart

Tim (Tim), Friday, 31 January 2003 17:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

Classic! Seven years ahead of his time!

matt riedl (veal), Friday, 31 January 2003 17:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think he was great. I like Seal's "Crazy" as well. I haven't heard TATU.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 31 January 2003 17:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Video Killed the Radio Star"!!!

I want Dr. C to wow me with another little piece like that or the Honey Lantree one.

Arthur (Arthur), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

He's producing the next Belle and Sebastian record, don't you know.

JDavid, Saturday, 1 February 2003 00:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

Easily their best record ever.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 1 February 2003 00:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

I love the production on the TATU single. It just sounds so compressed, like it's going to explode.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 1 February 2003 00:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

Lovin' me some Buggles. Hatin' me some Brooklyn Bounce.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 1 February 2003 00:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

He's certainly done his fine share of trinkets I've enjoyed.

And he certainly understands that we're never gonna survive unless we get a little crazy (btw, Seal rock(s)/(ed)).

**I want Dr. C to wow me with another little piece like that or the Honey Lantree one**

Watch this space Arthur - something coming very soon (if Tom agrees).

EVERYONE must get Buggles 'The Plastic Age' if only to celebrate the fact that 'Buggles' is the best band name ever.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 3 February 2003 10:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

I agree!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 3 February 2003 11:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

On an early 80s epic pop kick at the moment and wishing he'd given "Everything She Said" the sort of lavish, bombastic treatment he gave Propaganda's "Duel" and "Dr Mabuse" or even Buck's Fizz's "Land of Make Believe". What would today's pop kids make of that stuff?

Lord Marmite (Lord Marmite), Monday, 3 February 2003 14:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

eleven months pass...
Easily their best record ever.

prophetic words

DV (dirtyvicar), Saturday, 31 January 2004 00:18 (twenty years ago) link

Trevor Horn has earned his well-deserved place in popular music history due to his position in Buggles and his later work for ABC, Yes and Frankie Goes To Hollywood

I am hardly a fan of his recent work for t.a.t.u nor LeAnn Rhimes, but he did do a great job with Belle & Sebastian so it seems he is still capable of great things.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 31 January 2004 00:52 (twenty years ago) link

beyond classic

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 31 January 2004 01:54 (twenty years ago) link

jack cole (jackcole), Saturday, 31 January 2004 02:59 (twenty years ago) link

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 31 January 2004 03:17 (twenty years ago) link

i love how the gta:vice city dj's give him mad props

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 31 January 2004 04:22 (twenty years ago) link

Beyond classic -- I still like to pull out FGTH's Pleasuredome as an example of how side one of a truly *epic* album should sound.
