Pbbbblllltttt.... the Boredoms, like, I don't know, basically made me love music again.

The last two albums are INSANE in their greatness. I mean, I loved the noise stuff to a degree but fuck.. vision indeed.

I think those bastards are just waiting around to release a big ole Super Roots box set. Or maybe not. Either way I need all the Super Roots. Anyone that wantsta trade, please email...

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 30 May 2003 06:36 (twenty years ago) link

I have those, Mr. Diamond, if you want to trade.

dleone (dleone), Friday, 30 May 2003 11:03 (twenty years ago) link

I only know Vision Creation Newsun but FUCK ME is it infuckingcredible.

Where do I go from there tho? It seems thay're totally different every record they make, which is thoroughly commendable but not a little daunting.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 30 May 2003 11:21 (twenty years ago) link

Buy Super Ae next for sure.

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 30 May 2003 11:55 (twenty years ago) link

here's my stock response i pasted out of the Boredoms:POO thread cos i'm too luddite to be able to link to it:
yeh - super ae is OK if ye forget the bits that sound like pete townshend circa tommy. perhaps the most amon duul of the reckids they've done. VCN is more or less a 70min cover version of can's "future days" (in a good way). pop tatari and wow2 always strick me as a badly produced heavy amateur metal band like you might see in any pub or student union bar no tunes v. ploddy not "motorik" but het how wacky they got a trumpet player. if you want the kerayzee spazz annoying boredoms the go for soul discharge '77 is good but i like chocolate synthesizer better.

bob snoom, Friday, 30 May 2003 12:03 (twenty years ago) link

So this is interesting. I'm not suprised about the love here for the "new" boredoms, but I am suprised about the non-rating of the earlier material. I can't help feeling this derives more from some unaccountable current "taste" rather than the quality of the material, i.e. fractured collage art spazz punk is now dated to the 90's while proggy offshoots of the same seem of the moment.

The word "heavy" has come up a lot here, and the other thread talked about "groove". The earlier boredoms had their moments of these, but would subvert the expectations these set up rather than run with them, as the more recent boredoms do. I can see why the latter might make for a more "enjoyable" listening experience. But the earlier boredoms has its own pleasures, even if they aren't related to coherence. My own feeling listening to those records is that they are like a huge disorganized messy pile of brilliant half-realized things. I'd say Chocolate Synthesizer is the apex of this. And it somehow manages to be idiotic and cerebral, funny and serious, arty and artless all at once.

The "new" boredoms go to the opposite extreme--monomaniacal intensity--which somehow makes perfect sense to me. There's an extremity and obsession in ALL their "phases", which give their stylistic shifts a coherence below their surfaces.

So, yes, some of their recordings on their own are probably worth searching over others (I'll defer to above recommendations), but this is also a band that can be appreciated in its totality and (for me, at least) transcends an easy accounting by search and destroy.

super ae is OK if ye forget the bits that sound like pete townshend circa tommy.

I assume you're talking about "Super Going", that guitar tone & the Moonian cymbal wash -- that's one of my favorite tracks on the album. But then, I like Tommy too, so hey.

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 30 May 2003 12:49 (twenty years ago) link

Hisham Baroocha and Klaus Dinger to thread!

Jon Williams (ex machina), Friday, 30 May 2003 13:17 (twenty years ago) link

i think it's the ploddy chanty bits i was trying to characterize w/ the "tommy" ref. another band: check out ROVO feat seichi yamamoto. v nice trancey jams, also AMON DUUL's "psychedelic underground" (i will say again as caveman percussion style RIPPED!(or coincidentally approximated)), and if you like recent trancey boredoms you should like finnish band CIRCLE also try prospekt / SUNRISE (sunrise their best so far - beware of judas priestness - made up language), and their latest "alotus" mmm tight. if you're in the mood to sit around listenening to cyclical music try somo the NECKS. aquatic / hanging gardens you people might like if ye dinnae already . i dunno

bob snoom, Friday, 30 May 2003 14:03 (twenty years ago) link

SUNRISE (sunrise their best so far - beware of judas priestness - made up language)

But that's part of why it's so great!

Does anyone know if they have a new album in the works? It's been a while since VCN.

Sam J. (samjeff), Friday, 30 May 2003 15:01 (twenty years ago) link

Vooredoms album has been in the can since 2001 -- but Warner Japan just doesn't feel like releasing it. There have also been vague rumors of a Super Roots box.

dleone (dleone), Friday, 30 May 2003 15:09 (twenty years ago) link

EY3 has been DJ-ing, he and Yoshimi have been recording (as late as last year). The Boredoms as a group disbanded about 4 years ago after their last show at Fuji-Rock when Seiichi Yamamoto threw his guitar down and shattered it.

the splinter band with EY3 and Y0shimi is known as either V00redoms or 7v07 depending on the amount of drums or electronics or DJ-ing is involved. EY3 has been DJ-ing all over Japan in the last month, Yoshimi has SAIC0BABA and her okinowan/hawaiian hardcore band SUNPM0:00oo, and OoioO is currently on hiatus.

The Boredoms as a group disbanded about 4 years ago

Really? But what about (for instance) their appearance at All Tomorrow's Parties L.A. last year? That wasn't "The Boredoms"?

Sam J. (samjeff), Friday, 30 May 2003 15:40 (twenty years ago) link

For (ATP festival promoters) The Foundation, it was advantageous to book the current incarnation splinter group as The Boredoms but the band that was known throughout the 1990s as The Boredoms is no longer. They broke up at their peak, a feat very few bands have the courage to do. The current 7v07 that will be playing ATP in a few weeks (also as "The Boredoms") is no similar to The Boredoms as UFO or Die.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 30 May 2003 15:51 (twenty years ago) link

The Matt Groening ATP flier has "The Boredoms" listed as well. Shady...

And as for early Boredoms, the reason I'm a bit biased and ignore this material despite later albums being some of my faves is because the first Boredoms record I ever bought was Super Roots 1 about 4-5 years ago. I knew nothing about it, vaguely recalled some Boredoms hype, and bought it because it was cheap. Damn near put me off on the Boredoms forevar. Felt like I was on the receiving end of some prank they'd pulled.

Prob. a little silly to still have this bias but I'm a small man!

original bgm, Friday, 30 May 2003 16:33 (twenty years ago) link

Super Roots 3 is great tho. Reminds me of black metal.

original bgm, Friday, 30 May 2003 16:42 (twenty years ago) link

I have been listening to this mp3 of a song called (Star) for two hours now and it is absolutely fabulous. Perfect drumming (not too tribal), echoing synthesizer sounding like a crossover of a jew's harp and a theremin. And after a while the track falls apart, implodes into noise. Like trying to listen to the radio when turning the wavelength modulator. At the end it gets back into track. Which record is this from? And which is the most essential album of theirs?

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Saturday, 31 May 2003 11:40 (twenty years ago) link

"Star" (or the symbol for a star) is the second track on Vision Creation Newsun. See above for recs - if you like that, go for VCN, Super ae or possibly Super Roots 7.

dleone (dleone), Saturday, 31 May 2003 15:32 (twenty years ago) link

So far I don't like VCN nearly as much as the other two Boredoms CDs I have, but one thing that impresses me (with Super ae and VCN) is that they have essentially made "Krautrock" albums that are as good as most of the original Krautrock I heard, and completely convincing as a continuation of that sort of approach.

Rockist Scientist, Sunday, 1 June 2003 18:08 (twenty years ago) link

About the Vooredoms/7v07 apperance at All Tomorrow's Parties: there are rumors circulating around the internet that this month's ATP Festival in LA has been cancelled and/or postponed until September. I really hope it's not true, but does anyone know anything about this? The ATP web site (www.atpfestival.com) isn't responding.

die9o (dhadis), Monday, 2 June 2003 13:01 (twenty years ago) link

The remix of VCN by eYe is superior to the original, better than Super AE, but not as good as Pop Tatari, Super Roots 6 or 7.

WOW2 has just been released in the UK, but i'd stear clear if you're not a fan of Onanie Bomb or Soul Discharge.

Does an UNKLE Rebore megamix really exist? This sounds horrid.

ss, Monday, 2 June 2003 15:56 (twenty years ago) link

I had written to ATP last week about my tix, and they ("helen") said they had just been sent. Why send them if you're going to cancel the event?

dleone (dleone), Monday, 2 June 2003 16:00 (twenty years ago) link

Vooredoms album has been in the can since 2001 -- but Warner Japan just doesn't feel like releasing it.

How are the Boredoms regarded in Japan? Are they music superstars, a national treasure? Is Eye a media hero? (Without knowing, I would guess that they must have, at the very least, the status that Sonic Youth has in the U.S. - if not even more exposure/popularity/"institutional" respect.)

I'm surprised that they couldn't get anything released that they wanted to release.

Sam J. (samjeff), Monday, 2 June 2003 17:00 (twenty years ago) link

ATPLA has been rescheduled for late September.

They've all pretty much been reissued on Zorn's label now so shouldn't be that hard to find in the States. The UK however has something like a one Boredoms album every 10 years import quotient.

Oh I meant to ask, does anyone have any of the super lush Japanese imports like the copy of Super AE that supposedly has some multi- coloured liquid inside the sleeve?

ss, Tuesday, 3 June 2003 17:00 (twenty years ago) link

FOR THOSE WHO DON'T LIKE TO SPEND A LOT OF MONEY PAYING IMPORT DUTY [~120 yen = $1 US]

??? hmm

Oh I meant to ask, does anyone have any of the super lush Japanese imports like the copy of Super AE that supposedly has some multi- coloured liquid inside the sleeve?

there were 10,000 of super ARE (neon green puffy vinyl with clear liquid) and 10,000 of super GO (red puffy vinyl with clear liquid). check jetset for occasional boredoms rarities.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 17:16 (twenty years ago) link

I bet it tastes nice and isn't at all poisonous.

ss, Tuesday, 3 June 2003 17:24 (twenty years ago) link

Speaking of rarities, to anyone who had been pulling their hair out looking for an affordable copy of SR5, apparently, many copies have been "discovered", and it's available for regular Japanese import prices now. I actually got it on ebay shortly after this happened for about $25 -- a far cry from the $60+ you might see it for previously.

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 17:29 (twenty years ago) link

SR5 is available at list price ~$16 (¥1,920) at most japanese retailers. shipping should be less than $9... a lot less if you buy a few things.

i found most of the pre-super ae records used. people who picked up that shit in the wake of nirvana mania dropped it like a day later.

Yeah around 1998 or so Amoeba in SF had like three copies of every Boredoms release for about $5 each. That was my intro -- I picked up the first Super Roots after reading about them in the Spin guide. Didn't care for it.

Here's an honest question for the Boredoms fans: What do you think their standing would be if they'd broken up before Super Roots 7 or Super Ae?

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 17:49 (twenty years ago) link

I think they'd have become legends, especially because ending a career with an album like SR6, after everything that preceded it, would have been pretty darn enigmatic.

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 17:57 (twenty years ago) link

i think they'd be legends too, but more in a "90s curio" kinda way

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 19:18 (twenty years ago) link

That's a Boris CD, actually, Jon.

die9o (dhadis), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 19:26 (twenty years ago) link

a lot of the SUPER ROOTS stuff i heard is really no better than a bunch of 90s cassette releases on OSKA / chocolate monk - and that's not to say it's bad. it will not redeem your soul, though.

bob snoom, Wednesday, 4 June 2003 07:47 (twenty years ago) link

It's good to hear some balance, bob.

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 4 June 2003 07:55 (twenty years ago) link

It's true, not all the Super Roots stuff is essential. SR 7 is, though (if you like their last two albums).

Also worth tracking down are the singles that preceded Super ARe and VCN. They are "Super Go!!!" and "Vision Creation Newsun". Confusingly, the latter has the same name as the album but is a forty minute ep with an edit of the first track on VCN, a pretty good remix of stuff from that album, and a phenomenal live track that they played under a solar eclipse in '99. Forced Exposure is selling it (and copies of Super Roots 5 and 8, apparently).

If you can track down "Super Go" on vinyl, the b-side (different from the 2nd track on the CD version) is also really good. Though to be fair, it's a longer mix of the song that appears as "Super Now" on the comp CD that commemorated the 2002 All Tomorrow's Parties in LA. So if you have that, you probably don't need to spend the $20 or whatever...

die9o (dhadis), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 14:36 (twenty years ago) link

looks like it was three hours and change but i think the set is still accessible or for a week if you bought a ticket

watching the eye set now, it’s cool. very digital noise but still the same old eye we all know and love.
