POO: Wu-Tang

Hmm, it's close, but I'll have to go with "Clan In Da Front" -- the subtly pitch-shifted snares are a masterstroke, the bassline in the long intro sounds like a three-inch-in-diameter cord stretched up to normal bass range and on the verge of snapping, and the opening verse is one of my favorite ever: hilarious wordplay coupled with an amazingly gradual loss of calm and composure until the nearly-spitting end.

Protect Ya Neck is my instinctual choice.

JS Williams (js williams), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 04:18 (sixteen years ago) link

So many to pick from... but I'm gonna go with "Reunited," for the amazing violin solo (anyone know who that is?) and the goofy, sexy "It's Wu motherfuckers/ Wu Tang motherfuckers" refrain.

Jesse Fox (Jesse Fox), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 06:15 (sixteen years ago) link

"Reunited" seconded.

Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 07:42 (sixteen years ago) link

Nah, Shadowboxing by Gza/Method Man. Especially the bit where meth goes 'I don't give a cotton-pickin' fuck...'

"Shadowboxing" has the best beat EVAH.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 13:52 (sixteen years ago) link

Thinking about it, two more best evah wu songs occur to me:
Tragedy by Rza (which makes even the puff daddy-worthy musical crime of basing a song around a eurythmics track seem like a good idea)
Black Jesus by Ghostface (esp. for U-God's astonishing, unstoppable verse)

"Triumph"

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 16:25 (sixteen years ago) link

"M.E.T.H.O.D. Man" off ENTER THE WU-TANG (36 CHAMBERS) still completely rocks.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 00:56 (sixteen years ago) link

"Buck 50".

Alternatively, that one where ODB goes "I don't walk/ I get carried" off "Wu Tang Forever"

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 00:58 (sixteen years ago) link

"Reunited" definitely up there. I don't know who the violinist is either but that shit is OUT OF CONTROL. Never heard anything else close to it.

But my other nominee would have to be Ghostface's "Daytona 500" - it nicks the bassline from "Children's Story" and bangs a million times harder (no disrespect to Slick Rick, mind ya).

Fuggit, I'll bite. "4th Chamber"

The Reverend, Monday, 12 March 2007 01:52 (twelve years ago) link

complete posse cut: "Chessboxin'" or "Triumph" for sure.

miscellaneous members: "4th Chamber," although there are a ton of strong claimants to runner-up here, "Knuckleheadz" ("Then skate to the next state / further upstate") and "Rules" for example.

solo: "Killah Hills 10304" does it for me, GZA doing what GZA does best, better than he does it anywhere else: dense, confident image-painting narrative. The section beginning with "There's no need for us to spray up the scene / I use less men, more powerful shit for my team" is so economical it's unbelievable. Plus, the beat, which even moreso than anything else on Liquid Swords sounds like Doom 2 music that didn't quite make the cut, which is always a ticket into my musical heart.

In general the tendency here seems to be towards the first few years of Wu, which is fair for the most part but it's a shame that tracks like "Pinky Ring" (blueski aside) will always have a tough time of it on best-of lists. From any other crew they would be unquestionable winners....

"POO: Method Man Guest Spot" would be a fascinating thread I think....

That bastard pharma boss bought Wu-Tang Clan’s $2 million album
http://www.factmag.com/2015/12/09/martin-shkreli-wu-tang-clan-once-upon-time-shaolin/

Update: Continuing his quest to be the troll of the year, Shkreli is now live-streaming a list of artists that he’d pay to release an album just for him.

As for the Wu-Tang fans who are likely to feel queasy when they learn that he’s the owner of Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, Shkreli just shrugs. “At the end of the day,” he says, “they didn’t buy the last album or the one before that, and all they had to pay was $10.”

three years pass...

The Showtime documentary was superb (cried when Ghost broke down talking about ODB's death). Who would've guessed U-God would be the MVP of it? And for all there is to love about RZA, he's clearly the villain of the group.

That aside, the best Wu joint ever is "Triumph." If Cappadonna's verse was cut, it might be my favorite song ever. Crazy that they invited in one of the worst MCs to ever hold a mic after they were already massive.

Wally P. Doyle, Sunday, 2 June 2019 05:24 (three months ago) link

Two words: "Winter Warz." Cap's the MVP of that shit

I want to see this documentary but I don't have the energy to start a free trial of Showtime and then have to remember to cancel it before the trial period is up

Paul Ponzi, Sunday, 2 June 2019 12:47 (three months ago) link

I do agree about "Triumph" being top tier Wu, btw. I'm old enough to remember the premiere of the video and remember thinking Wu Tang Forever was gonna be even better than 36 Chambers. Obviously, this would not be the case. But what a single.

Paul Ponzi, Sunday, 2 June 2019 12:49 (three months ago) link

Cosign the praise of the showtime documentary, watched over the last few days and thought it was finally the doc their story deserves. Couldnt believe how much contemporaneous footage there was of actual arguments, incl ODB begging to be let out of his contract, members arguing with Divine about money, etc. It was super sad to see the footage of ODB working on his post-prison album, knowing that it would never get finished. Fav part may have been RZA and Ghost arguing over who saw the Shaolin and Wu Tang movie first.

One Eye Open, Wednesday, 5 June 2019 14:59 (three months ago) link

Also Cilvaringz comes off as a complete dope, which is funny.

One Eye Open, Wednesday, 5 June 2019 15:01 (three months ago) link

Had heard about this, then forgot about it again, until this thread update, so downloaded this and just watched the first episode. What a documentary man... Made with so much love! The scenes at the Statue of Liberty, them recalling the projects and the hustling and bustling, the racism that just incinerates young black people... It's very powerful stuff.

woah that's way wrong

plus Cappadonna was already in the Wu right? or at least the story I'd read that he would have been on 36 Chambers but he was in jail or something

Yeah it's in the doc as well, they all wanted Cappa to join when he got out of jail

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 5 June 2019 20:30 (three months ago) link

(ripped through two episodes more, only one to go)

I never realized this back in the day, but RZA (and Divine had a big part in this, too) not wanting to sign out ODB was some cold shit, him just coming out of jail for that ridiculous racist charge, strapped for cash.

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 5 June 2019 20:34 (three months ago) link

"Call me a cab, it's the razor sharp kid!" Cappadonna's The Pillage easily ranks with the best of the first wave of solo albums.

Yelploaf, Wednesday, 5 June 2019 20:35 (three months ago) link

Showtime docu is fantastic, especially since it's warts n' all and not a glorified puff piece. These guys, at their height, were untouchable and it was a thrill to hear everything that came out of the Wu camp when they were on fire.

Carly Jae Vespen (Capitaine Jay Vee), Wednesday, 5 June 2019 21:31 (three months ago) link

And the classic albums *still* hold up, just as classic today.

Carly Jae Vespen (Capitaine Jay Vee), Wednesday, 5 June 2019 21:32 (three months ago) link

This was the best. People who don't even know Wu should totally see this as well. It's got everything: the timeless art of coming from nothing, making millions amongst friends and having everything fall apart. The realness of them facing racism. The way most of them (well, those alive still) getting it together right now.

Cilvaringz is def a dope, as mentioned upthread, but Divine comes off worse imo.

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 5 June 2019 22:37 (three months ago) link

you can figure out which Diggs brother is the genius based on their choice of filming location and seating

rob, Wednesday, 5 June 2019 22:44 (three months ago) link

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 5 June 2019 22:49 (three months ago) link

The scenes at the Statue of Liberty.

Oh my god those scenes were so heartwarming, them meeting their old boss at the restaurant, Method Man saying how he still has dreams about working there, I loved it

One Eye Open, Wednesday, 5 June 2019 23:22 (three months ago) link

Right? He called it the best job he ever had and man did he mean it!

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 5 June 2019 23:32 (three months ago) link

This is the first music documentary I have enjoyed in a very long time (and I watch a lot of them because I am a masochist). Only weak parts for me were the perhaps inevitable celeb talking head bits (though it can be argued that Jarmusch deserves to be there given his history with RZA; Seth fucking Rogen, not so much). But thoroughly enjoyed this, thought it was really well done. Doc also confirms something I have long suspected: Ghost is the heart of the Wu.

Paul Ponzi, Thursday, 6 June 2019 23:50 (three months ago) link

Agreed, Rogen certainly had no place in this. They shouldn't have done the celeb talking heads bit, it contributed nothing.

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 7 June 2019 09:52 (three months ago) link

I didn't think the Wu-Tang Clan could sustain a four hour documentary a la Tom Petty or whomever, but two episodes in and it's pretty interesting so far.

Rogen stuck out a little, but not knowing where the series is going he still probably works as a usual proxy for the group's white audience. I doubt it's addressed, at least not explicitly, but it's kind of striking contrasting all the old clips and tales from the streets being performed or told to almost exclusively black audiences and more recent clips of the group playing to all white audiences. Rogen may not have much cultural analysis to offer, but he does have experience as a fan or audience member, or at least one particular type of both, that has helped the group last this long.

And on that front the Wu-Tang Clan is a small miracle. (More or less) nine powerful personalities, many with successful solo careers, sticking together for 25 years? I can hardly imagine.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 7 June 2019 10:23 (three months ago) link

A lot of what you're wondering (the black/white audience thing) will be thoroughly addressed, explicitly, later on. :)

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 7 June 2019 10:27 (three months ago) link

Good to know. I'm glad!

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 7 June 2019 10:44 (three months ago) link

And--MILD SPOILER--the third act is predictably where things also begin to get a little dark

Paul Ponzi, Friday, 7 June 2019 12:26 (three months ago) link

I finished Chamber Music recently, which is very good, so I need to see this. Cappadonna hit the countryside!

Captain ACAB (Neil S), Friday, 7 June 2019 12:57 (three months ago) link

As far as apt malaphors go, Cappadonna describing ODB at the start of part three as "smarter than a speeding bullet" is the best.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 7 June 2019 13:09 (three months ago) link

Some of the ODB footage is tough to watch. The scene of him talking to Divine on the phone choking back tears saying "It's me, man, it's Rusty" is seriously heartbreaking

Paul Ponzi, Friday, 7 June 2019 16:42 (three months ago) link

I just finished part 3. I forgot how bad ODB looked when he got out of jail. I also can't believe (and didn't remember) that he was put away for 3 years for wearing body armor.

Man, his Don Jr. looking weasel of a manager. Highlight might have been RZA coming in to the studio, and that dude, Jared, being all "who are you?" And RZA just shoots him a look and coldly says "you know who I am."

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 7 June 2019 17:34 (three months ago) link

OK, gotta admit, part four was kind of a chore. It felt like the same story over and over, and the shit about Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, Cilvaringz and Martin Shkreli, I could give a shit. But the episode was probably worth it for I think Cappadonna dropping some wisdom at the end: ain't none of us smarter than anyone else here, and if you are smarter, then you should be helping *me*.
