search: "summertime is here", the jill scott remix, most of the first floor lp, the "baby steps" ep.

destroy: moodymann.

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 11 January 2003 16:31 (seventeen years ago) link

You had to ask, didn't you? ; )

Well, from what I hear, outside of Detroit his stuff can be a little hard to come by. I'm spoiled. I can go to a local record store here (Record Time) and pick up the majority of his 12"s and, if the timing's right, his way-limited mix CD-Rs. As a DJ, he's not always technically perfect, but his track selection and strange EQing make him my favorite.

That being said, I highly recommend the following:
-FIRST FLOOR: album on Peacfrog, available on CD. Great place to start.
-PARALLEL DIMENSIONS: album on Sound Signature (his label). Also available on CD, but I have the vinyl.
-"Summertime Is Here" 12" on Sound Signature. Closer to astral jazz than house in a lot of ways.
-"Sawala Seyale/I Can Take It" 12" on Sound Signature: Great Afrohouse b/w his take on Recloose's "I Can't Take It"
-"Solitary Flight/Dellwood II" 12" on Sound Signature: Just released. "Solitary Flight" features a great piano line and killer violin. Orchestral house.
-ECLECTIC AESTHETIC Vol. 1 & 2: great mix set CD-R that encompasses Fela, Bob Marley, Prince, Liaisons Dangereuses, deep house, disco and soul.
-THESE DAYS & TIMES Vol. 1 & 2: Another mix CD-R. Vol. 1 starts with more current stuff and moves into classic disco and soul on Vol. 2
-the rest of the 12"s on Sound Signature!

If you can't find his stuff in stores near you, try Record Time (, Forced Exposure or Bent Crayon.

Since his stuff can be hard to find, I'd be willing to make CD-Rs of the CDs I have to trade. Just email me.

Jess, how can say "destroy moodymann"?

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Saturday, 11 January 2003 16:36 (seventeen years ago) link

i saw this mix cd the other day, methods of something? looked kinda limited

loved the jill scott mix, sun ra one less so

zemko (bob), Saturday, 11 January 2003 16:54 (seventeen years ago) link

The Jill Scott remix is very nice. I'd love to hear the Sun Ra one. Where did you come across it, zemko?

Methods of Movement? Haven't come across this one, either. There's a good discography here:

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Saturday, 11 January 2003 17:13 (seventeen years ago) link

the sun ra one was a behind the counter white label a couple of weeks after the jill scott... you've made me doubt myself now, he easn't remixed some other majo jazz guy in the last couple of months has he?methods of movement i saw at an exorbitant price in hmv

zemko (bob), Saturday, 11 January 2003 17:19 (seventeen years ago) link

No, it was indeed a Sun Ra remix. I guess there's supposed to be a compilation coming out with a bunch of Sun Ra remixes (I have mixed feelings about this, but I'd like to hear Theo's take).

Where are you, Zemko? I'm surprised to hear an HMV would have it! The mix CD-Rs generally run about $15 from the stores here, and about $17 elsewhere (also saw some at Amoeba in San Fran).

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Saturday, 11 January 2003 17:27 (seventeen years ago) link

london. occasionally hmv has the clout to just order a huge loadof import rarities. charging $35-40 for it though

zemko (bob), Saturday, 11 January 2003 17:36 (seventeen years ago) link

You can also try in Amsterdam. They seem to have some sort of hotline to Detroit...

michael wells (michael w.), Saturday, 11 January 2003 21:11 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, theo parrish and moodymann are *not* the same person, eh? I kinda do, but mostly DON'T understand why you can hardly mention one without the other.

Anyway, I like the "I Can Take It" 12", and most of the other Sound Signature stuff but oh is it hard and/or expensive to find. Thanks for the offer of trade Jeff, and does anyone have some of the 12 inches dubbed to cd and want to trade?

arch Ibog (arch Ibog), Sunday, 12 January 2003 03:07 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, what's up w/ the destroy Moodymann?! He's the shit. I'm curious why you think that, Jess.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 12 January 2003 04:05 (seventeen years ago) link

BTW, I love Theo's mixes. 'Eclectic Aesthetic 1&2' are incredible. 'Live at the Temple' was another really good one. Ah, the Temple. Nice little club, I guess it has now shuttered. Right in the heart of fashionable Ferndale.

I think I have most of the mix cd's. You could usually get them from FE when they were released but you had to act fast. I'd be willing to burn copies for anyone interested. Just drop me a line.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 12 January 2003 09:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Yes, destroy Moodymann. Then get his heirs to reprint those mindblowing amazing rare 12"s that nobody has actually ever heard. Or just replace him with a clone that will do interviews. Well, don't destroy Moodymann, just the personality cult.

Hi!! now, is really difficult to find live in japan on the net, but you cand find live in detroit in "" in mix archives1, and you can download it. I have live in japan, but the problem is that i¨m spanish, and i can´T send you and a copy but if you would like to see theo in live try in "" at the end of the page in da session of detroit music festival punch listen and you can see theo mixing and you cansee theo too in ""

I hope that you answer me someday, because is really difficult find in spain people who love and understand theo parrish concept, as a dj as a producer.

Enjoy da good fucking shit.

Live in Detroit is highly recommended. I love most of his stuff, though the Sun Ra remix was surprisingky horrible, and I hated that Major Moments of Instant Insanity 12" too - everything else, definitely search. He's one of a kind.

i dont suppose anyone out there can s/d the ugly edits series he did? i feel like there's a classic in one of dem bones but i lost heart diggin theo after a while

prima fassy (mwah), Friday, 9 April 2004 23:18 (sixteen years ago) link

I only picked up one of the Ugly Edits, the one with Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes's "Bad Luck" cut up on it. I gotta say it was my least favorite Theo production. Pick up Sound Signature 18 and the new one on Harmonie Park instead (sorry, don't have them in front of me right now or I'd give you the specific titles).

Jess, I remember you bagging on SILENCE IN THE SECRET GARDEN a bit when that came out, maybe that was it. I'm biased, I hold KDJ second only to Theo in house music production.

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Saturday, 10 April 2004 00:56 (sixteen years ago) link

oh yeah, i am totally now and forever in love with a slient introduction...moodymann is a-okay chez strongo

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 10 April 2004 00:57 (sixteen years ago) link

Parrish's Rotating Assembly album is excellent (rugged, muddy, spiritual as all get-out), as is the new Moodymann -- it completely makes up for Silence in the Secret Garden, which I thought was relatively weak compared to his other LPs. He recycles a lot of old material, as always (Shades of Jae, I'm Doing Fine, Runaway, Black Mahogani, the Love and War beat he gave Amp Fiddler, etc.), but I love the way he puts everything in a new context. Plus: more Detroit 9000 dialogue!

PS: Andrés will never get enough love.

Theo Parrish is MY hero!

Andy, what is this Rotating Assembly album of which you speak?

"I wish all the Theo Parrish releases weren't so nebulous and expensive"

Ha, for once I have a leg up on all y'all grime/gutter garage white label collectors, shit I can't get ahold of in my local shops! The Record Time stores in the Detroit suburbs always have Theo's stuff, and for very afforable prices. Maybe it's no so bad here after all!

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Saturday, 10 April 2004 17:16 (sixteen years ago) link

Either RT should have it on vinyl right now -- it's a triple-pack album. It's out on CD in Japan and, from what I've been told, it'll be available here through Sound Signature at some point soon. Over 20 people help out, including Andrés, Hanna, Rick Wilhite, and a bunch of vocalists. Lots of live instrumentation yet still very Theo. The vocals are so fogged out that half the time I can't even tell what the lyrics are.

Really digging the Harmonie Park 12" as well.

Andy K (Andy K), Saturday, 10 April 2004 18:56 (sixteen years ago) link

andy is the moodymann out yet? does it have decent distribution? i fear my new job is going to force me into buying a lot of records again...

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 10 April 2004 20:35 (sixteen years ago) link

I bought the first two Ugly Edits, they were ok but I sure coulda used that money on something better. Sheesh. Actually, the Harold Melvin one is pretty great.

Didn't the last Moodymann come out like 6 months ago??

Broheems (diamond), Saturday, 10 April 2004 21:07 (sixteen years ago) link

Agreed, Broheems, considering the price of the Ugly Edits, it's better to just pick up regular Theo 12"s.

Thanks for the tip, Andy. I'm surprised I didn't notice this on my last trip to Record Time. I don't stop in there very often (every couple months usually), but I was just there maybe 3 weeks ago and didn't see it.

p.s. Mullygrubber is my hero for hooking me up with Burzum and a bunch of Brazilian stuff in exchange for my Theo and Moodymann and Danielle Dax stuff.

recommend more Parrish for someone who thinks that the Jill Scott remix is a work of fucking genius but could do without any of the stuff with too many jazz flutes in it.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 17:26 (sixteen years ago) link

do you have the first floor album or the sound signature sounds compilation? those are a bit more uptempo than the jill scott track in general but similarly chunky. the jazz flute stuff is a more recent trend (if i'm reading what you're saying right).
