Unintentionally Ridiculous Album Covers?

As an offshoot of the Smuggest Album cover thread, please cite covers on which the artists in question are the victims of a stylistic backfire. The first that springs to my mind is....

I'm talking about album covers that should really inspire abject embarassment in the artists in question.

Have at it...

Not that they didn't already look ridiculous, but....

I --- sadly -- must agree. Easily the worst thing (visually) they've ever done (that the music contained therein is equally sub-par is another matter).

I have that album! One of these days I'll actually listen to it too.

I think this one is also prime candidate for the "smug" thread, as well. my apologies if this picture doesn't work... i am not versed in the ways of html.

this thread so belongs to Britny Fox (a group so ridiculous and lame could only come from Philly)

Whose brilliant idea was it to have Aerosmith dress like coal miners?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 11 January 2003 09:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Maybe this falls under "intentionally" ridiculous, but what exactly was poor Wendy driving at (*rimshot*) here?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 11 January 2003 09:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Actually, this has got to be the cake-taker. Witness poor Bill Ward's disquietingly form-fitting trousers, rivalled in sheer ludicrousity only by Ozzy's inexplicable kimono/platform shoe combination.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 11 January 2003 09:40 (seventeen years ago) link

That Giorgio Morodor cover is great! One of the best .. albums .. evah !

Anyway, Alex, you've unleashed the fucking fury!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 11 January 2003 09:40 (seventeen years ago) link

ok alex, you had to unleash the fury(!) of sabotage ... this one takes the cake re too-tight trousers:

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 11 January 2003 09:44 (seventeen years ago) link

And, of course, surely any Manowar cover would suffice, but who could forget.....

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 11 January 2003 09:45 (seventeen years ago) link

and, speaking about unleashing the fucking fury:

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 11 January 2003 09:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Dude, he is seriously unleashing the fucking fury right there!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 11 January 2003 09:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Too loose trousers:

...but Manowar takes the cake...of beef.

oh, the eighties and hair metal ... but what the fuck was this album cover all about?

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 11 January 2003 10:01 (seventeen years ago) link

oh yeah, nothing like eighties homoerotic German metal ... Turbonegro and Rob Halford, eat yer hearts out!

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 11 January 2003 10:03 (seventeen years ago) link

were any of these things cool or appealing in a non-ironic way? ever?

Vic (Vic), Saturday, 11 January 2003 10:04 (seventeen years ago) link

hmmm, three of the albums shown herein are from groups from Philadelphia (Hall & Oates, Britny Fox, DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince). what does that mean?

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 11 January 2003 10:08 (seventeen years ago) link

and the hall & oates album cover looks like someone put Brian Eno from his Roxy Music/Here Come the Warm Jets-"Hello, Sailor!" days (Hall) and Gary "Bababooey" Dell'Abate from Howard Stern (Oates) together.

DC Power Outlet (DC Power Outlet), Saturday, 11 January 2003 10:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Vic, having lived through that time I can tell you that I bought that Accept album without a second thought! I had heard 'Balls to the Wall' on the radio (believe or not, in the mid-eighties you could hear heavy metal by the likes of Accept on the radio in the US!). I certainly had no clue as to Udo's predilections ... but good on 'im!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 11 January 2003 10:13 (seventeen years ago) link

I was just going to post the album cover, but the whole promo poster is really just that much more worthy...
manboobs like you've never seen before!

original bgm, Saturday, 11 January 2003 17:51 (seventeen years ago) link

I have a few thoughts:

I remember seeing the Hall and Oats LP in the bins years ago, and I kind of like the cover. You can't tell from the washed out look of the image above, but to me it kind of had a glam, Interview Magazine style look to it. And the original issue's sleeve had a reflective silver paper. How's the music?
I can't stand David Lee Roth, but like that cover. He's intentionally rediculous, anyway.
On the *back* of the Black Sabbath cover you can see Bill Ward's (checkered) underwear through his tights! It must have been airbrushed out on the front. And I think Ozzy's get-up is audacious and fetching.
That Manowar; oh my gosh. This is one record I really can't imagine bringing up to the counter to buy with a straight face. Who could?
I like that "Mechancal Animals" cover, but like even more the inside pic of La Manson done up exactly like Eno in the gatefold of "For Your Pleasure".

i've seen that album cover many time, but it just hit me: are all the dudes in man-o-war really that buff or is that airbrushed?

Super impressed at the image embeds still working from 17 years ago. Those covers are sitting patiently on a server waiting to be invoked.
