not quite classic but certainly far from dud, I like them quite a bit.

Search: "In Place Of Real Insight" LP and "Unsolved" LP

nothing really to destroy, just some stuff isn't as strong..

I find that they can be very samey... much of the Karate I've heard can be interchanged with most other Karate.

That said, a stand-out would be "There Are Ghosts."

Destroy the longer tracks (5+ minutes) because they bore me to tears.

Karate's pretty good but far from classic, and I must admit I've avoided their recent reportedly jazzier stuff.

I like the Secret Stars better than any Karate stuff I've heard, which might mean I'm a wimpy lo-fi type. Still, there's plenty of beautiful bedroom pop on the Stars' self-titled. The songs his gurlfriend sings might be too twee for some...

I've only heard the first two albums but I'd say they're the kind of band where you really only need one of their albums. And that's only if you feel like having an album of dry, mopey, collegiate angst around to put on when your student loan bill arrives.

Secret Stars crap all over Karate. So does Geoff Farina's solo work.

Search: "Cherry Coke", destroy absolutely everything else. Yeah, I'm one of 'those people'. I'd take Admiral (or Hoover, or Crownhate Ruin, or...) over Karate any day.

dude, d!390 man you're like stealing my answers. That Karate/Crownhate Ruin split is about the only good thing the former ever did. Wish I could find the first two singles by the latter, dammit.

LJ, have you checked these dudes? Might be a bit too straight on the jazz for you, but I'd suggest the third rec (The Bed is in the Ocean, good transitional one) or anything after for a look sometime.

The Cancel / Sing EP (?) is putting up a strange argument for being their best work this afternoon. At very least, my personal favorite.

he doesn't need to be racist about it though. (Austin), Saturday, 13 January 2018 01:10 (six months ago) Permalink

"strange" = strong

blah, shitty day.

"I hear you sayin' `I am just one kid. We can't do what one thousand once did.`"

^^^For some reason, I love that line.

Has anyone ever gotten the term "Kraut-jazz" applied to them? Because, sometimes I feel like Karate was just that.

Thanks for the reminder that there are still Karate songs that I haven't heard.
