What do you make of them? They just released a 3" cd on TB6. Props for that.

Thoughts? Opinions?

geoff, Tuesday, 24 December 2002 23:02 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

I wasn't too impressed with them until I heard "The Dream is Going Down" a few weeks ago. I ordered the CD as soon as I got money, and I'm still expecting it.

Adam A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 24 December 2002 23:24 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

I think they're pretty tops, save for: the Cold Hands EP, the 7" on 31G and the split with Erase Errata, which are all artsy wanking with no purpose. Before that they were an excellent hardcore band, and after that (now) they're just a great band creating beautiful music, that some would be tempted to label 'ambient' or 'noise' or 'post-something-or-other,' but would be wrong.

I suggest the double LP and the 7" on Gravity Records (the yellow one) for a good sampling of each style.

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 25 December 2002 02:13 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

dude, check the archives. there have been like 3 other black dice threads over the past few months.

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 25 December 2002 02:15 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

yes, they should definitely get props for putting something out on tigerbeat6. because. ?

i've liked all of their stuff so far, but they really have hit on something interesting with the beaches and canyons/lost canyon stuff. just hope the next album isn't "another bloody canyon."

looking forward to the black eyes (bd+wolf eyes) thing that's supposed to be out on vinyl someday soon. and "cold hands" isn't artsy wanking with no purpose; there's a purpose there, somewhere.

your null fame (yournullfame), Wednesday, 25 December 2002 02:17 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

looking forward to the black eyes (bd+wolf eyes) thing that's supposed to be out on vinyl someday soon.

I hope you don't expect it to be anything like either of those bands; it's not. It's weird psychedlic/drone music. Mellow pot smoker music, except not very well executed.

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 25 December 2002 02:18 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

hey. I'm giving them props for releasing shit on tb6 cos I have big respect for it and they usually put out good shit.

geoff, Wednesday, 25 December 2002 02:30 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

i've heard the CDR versions of the black eyes stuff on american tapes; everyone seems to be of the opinion that the vinyl release is going to be completely different. i already like the amtapes versions, so if they just vinylize those, that'll be alright with me.

your null fame (yournullfame), Wednesday, 25 December 2002 14:31 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

think there's a dischord release in the offing for black eyes? or maybe ian was just raving about them lots...

what's the one i've got?
it's a yellow sleeve with black dice written on the side
with a picture of some lady with a weird head/or body.
it has four songs.
it's er, rubbish.

That's the Gravity 7". It is undeniably great older BD.

That Black Eyes is a band from DC, not the Black Dice/Wolf Eyes collaboration.

Hahaha.. I forgot about Black Eyes from DC (who are a great band by the way...). I thought people were confusing Ian Johnson with Ian McKaye... haha

i think Earthbound and balearic are off the mark, but feel it's kin to MPP, but in their own inscrutable way. if anything, Repo sorta makes Dice come full circle and i find it to be really punk. it's also bursting at the seams, messy as fuck, and i'm just glad that they've sorta reinvigorated themselves with this one. it also coheres with their visual aesthetic (not that Load Blown didn't).
seeing as how it comes with a 20 page book of art, the physical (rather than the leak) will be sweet meat indeed.

OldHamSweat, Friday, 6 February 2009 21:22 (eight years ago) Permalink

Well you're definitely right about it being more rough and ready (I'm basing all of this on Glazin btw) but its also looser, stretched at the seams, blissed out, but not in a boredoms psych-ey beaches and canyons but in a trashier VIBEZZ kinda way. Like something washed up at Ibiza maybe.

I really liked the pop rock of Black Bubblegum, he wrote (and apparently played solo once at Palisades in BK) all those songs on an acoustic guitar. this new one seems more in line with his most recent two: dance, techno, more of a focus on bass.
