Supersilent/Rune Grammofone, S&D?

I heard that bit by Supersilent on the recent double-disc edition of the Wire Tapper. Nice. Sounds like something I might want to check out, in factm but I wanted to take advantage of the wisdom of the assembled. Any thoughts on Supersilent's ouevre? Any other RG discs you'd recommend? I should say that what I heard struck me as a cross between stuff like AMM (whom I love) and more contempo electronic/postrock experimentalism (like a looser Kammerflimmer Kollektief maybe), all of which sounds good to me. Whaddya say?

I'm a huge Rune Grammofon fan, though I'm actually not that well versed in Supersilent. I'd particularly recommend Alog's two albums, both of which are along the lines you mention (AMM/Illusion of Safety meets laptop glitchisms), Argetti/Wiget, which is a bit more microsoundy, and Monolight's "Free Music." In a similar vein, check out Jazzkammer's latest, "Pancakes," on Smalltown Supersound.

i just picked up supersilent 5 last weekend (a purchase also inspired by that gorgeous track on the wire tapper). 5 is in a similar vein, so you'll definitely like it. i haven't really had a chance to sit down and absorb it fully yet, but there are some moments of sheer bliss that are immediately apparent.

Immediately apparent, yeah. A couple of summers ago, I walked into a store that was playing Supersilent 5 and bought it on the spot, not knowing a thing about them. I played it constantly for weeks. I've since picked up 4 and heard some of 1-3, which I suppose are all more "challenging".

i LOVE Supersilent and RuneGrammofon

i started with four, which is probably their most challenging, and also probably most rewarding. tons of electronic noise, drums falling down the stairs, and dark fusiony trumpet. the vocal samples on this one are spine tingling.

i then bought 5 which is WAY more mellow. i guess it's collections of live performances edited into a cohesive disc. more on the ambient fusion tip.

finally i picked up 1-3, their first 3cd release. this is way more analogue. less post-production work. sounds like a fusion band with all the members in different rooms, unaware of what the other players are doing.

also worth checking out is the trumpet player from Supersilent's solo disc Arve Henriksen's "Sakuteiki." it's a beautiful, mellow album where he so many sounds to come out of his trumpet. they recorded it in lots of weird locations (churches, etc) to get amazing dynamics and natural reverb. it's a zen-like album, he's trying to mimick the sound of the Japanese Shakuhachi flute. one song he just blows air through the pipes, no tones. one song he bounces a hard ball in the bells of the trumpet. one song he scratches something along the metal pipes. it's all very beautiful.

My favorite RuneGrammofon disc is the Scorch Trio. It's heavy modal fusion. Raoul Bjorkenhem (guitar), Ingebrigt haker flaten (bass) and paal nilssen-love (drums). it's hard and fast and improvised, and seriously, i sing the guitar solos. my favorite track has a four note bass line that the bass player sings along to his playing (doo doo da da). amazing album.

oh yeah, i was just listening to Robert Wyatt's first one "End of an Ear" while i typed this, and i swear i thought i was listening to Supersilent. it's his 'free album'

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 19 December 2002 18:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

hi, me again... i hear rumors there's a new Supersilent coming out the first week of January.

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 19 December 2002 21:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, Supersilent 6 coming out in January, though I heard maybe the latter part of the month.

By the way, checking them out at www.supersilence.net led me to Motorpsycho's "It's a Love Cult," which is nothing like Supersilent - it's almost conservatively traditional, ridiculously catchy psychedelic pop (my wife said, "This reminds me of the Monkees!"). But I recommend it if that's your thing.

I've had to import Rune Grammofon stuff in the States, usually ordering it from ECM. And it's not surprising that ECM distributes their stuff - in some ways Supersilent 5 is more ECM than almost anything ECM has done ...

Chris Dahlen (Chris Dahlen), Thursday, 19 December 2002 22:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

By the way, the Motorpsycho connection is that their "audio virus" guy, Deathprod, produced Motorpsycho, and that band is Norwegian. In case anyone was going, "WTF?"

I'm staggered by the vastness of the Norwegian music scene. I'm half-Norwegian, and it's driving me nuts that my dad passed away and can't sit through all the weird crap I've been finding from our homeland, most of which he would probably hate.

Thanks for the feedback. Looks like full investment is in the cards.

the phonophani album is real nice like oval if mr popp had more than one tune - the guy almost takes a dump in the punchboowl when he samples vincent gallo on the last track on the album but it works musically if you can disassociate yrself from the baggage.

So, 4 years since the last post on the RG thread? I quite like the new In the Country album. Any recommendations of recent releases?

Susanna and the Magical Orchestra - Melody Mountain

I rate Arve Henrkisen, Susanna and Deathprod. And Scorch Trio. And Shining (they're pretty daft though). Hell, I'd buy them all if I was rich, just so I could line them all up on my shelf and admire the typography. How expensive was that Deathprod 10"?!! It's great also.

I'm not feeling Susanna for the moment. She strikes me as Norah Jones doing a Nouvelle Vague.

For some reason I find their take on "It's a Long Way to the Top" profoundly affecting.

The cover they did of Love Will Tear Us Apart was one of my favorite tracks from last year. It's the way it brings the vocals out in particular.

"It's A Long Way To The Top" really is great...I also quite like their version of "It's Raining Today"...(time for a moratorium on "Hallelujah" covers, though)...the LP is a grower, that's for sure...

A new Shining album coming up end of Jan aswell. I seem to be one of the few (?) who really enjoyed the last one.

I liked the new Humcrush disc, and In The Country is not bad for a piano trio, but the tracks with guest guitar are 1000x better than the ones without.

I recently saw a triple RG bill, with In the Country, Susannah and Supersilent. The former were the best of the evening.

Wow @ Henriksen's Cartography, might very well be my favorite record of the year. Anyone?

sounded great on first listening a few days ago, but will give it another spin later today

maarten, Sunday, 16 November 2008 12:00 (fifteen years ago) link

It's really, really great indeed. Must dig into it's 'theme' some more, which was easier with the evenly beautiful but much more esoteric Strjon, but I like how there's slightly more electronica trickling through. Also, David Sylvian reading his poetry is gorgeous.

Le Bateau Ivre, Sunday, 16 November 2008 18:54 (fifteen years ago) link

tuesday's late junction is worth listening to if you like this stuff.

the sylvian track would be better ... as an instrumental.

djh, Sunday, 16 November 2008 19:26 (fifteen years ago) link

At first listen I didn't really get into the Sylvian track either I must admit but most of it is really good. Henriksen's freaky talented and seems like a nice guy too, it's almost painful

ok so these guys got three (!!!) albums coming out this year. 10 and 11 looks to be out already and 12 coming soon. apparently 11 is a vinyl only release of outtakes from the 8 sessions, i'm very psyched for that one.

that is, these guys = Supersilent

What's the best post-Jarle Supersilent album? I lost track after the DVD release (which was 7 iirc)

9 was really good (all three of them improvising on Hammond organs; had a very early Tangerine Dream feel at times) and the most recent one, 14, is good too, with lots of short pieces.

shared unit of analysis (unperson), Thursday, 25 April 2019 22:35 (five years ago) link

Short pieces sounds...interesting. I'll have to check that one out first. Thanks!

Really enjoyed the recent Ståle Storløkken / Thomas Stronen album as Humcrush and it made me think about the Supersilent albums I might have missed.

Very late to the party* I know, but it's 3:30 in the morning and 4 sounds perfect.

When I was doing college radio between 2007-2012 I must have heard 50-100 CDs from European bands that I would describe as forgettable variations on this sound (loose, jazzy drumming, abrupt electronic noises, amelodic skronk). Folks who were hip to this in the late 90s or thereabouts, Are these guys seen as particularly innovative or influential? I definitely knew the name Supersilent (and the packaging lol), I feel like they were always around and always respected.

*: Bizarrely, what drew me to them was my love of the 2019 Deathprod album, Occulting Disk
