i started with four, which is probably their most challenging, and also probably most rewarding. tons of electronic noise, drums falling down the stairs, and dark fusiony trumpet. the vocal samples on this one are spine tingling.
i then bought 5 which is WAY more mellow. i guess it's collections of live performances edited into a cohesive disc. more on the ambient fusion tip.
finally i picked up 1-3, their first 3cd release. this is way more analogue. less post-production work. sounds like a fusion band with all the members in different rooms, unaware of what the other players are doing.
also worth checking out is the trumpet player from Supersilent's solo disc Arve Henriksen's "Sakuteiki." it's a beautiful, mellow album where he so many sounds to come out of his trumpet. they recorded it in lots of weird locations (churches, etc) to get amazing dynamics and natural reverb. it's a zen-like album, he's trying to mimick the sound of the Japanese Shakuhachi flute. one song he just blows air through the pipes, no tones. one song he bounces a hard ball in the bells of the trumpet. one song he scratches something along the metal pipes. it's all very beautiful.
My favorite RuneGrammofon disc is the Scorch Trio. It's heavy modal fusion. Raoul Bjorkenhem (guitar), Ingebrigt haker flaten (bass) and paal nilssen-love (drums). it's hard and fast and improvised, and seriously, i sing the guitar solos. my favorite track has a four note bass line that the bass player sings along to his playing (doo doo da da). amazing album.

By the way, checking them out at www.supersilence.net led me to Motorpsycho's "It's a Love Cult," which is nothing like Supersilent - it's almost conservatively traditional, ridiculously catchy psychedelic pop (my wife said, "This reminds me of the Monkees!"). But I recommend it if that's your thing.
I've had to import Rune Grammofon stuff in the States, usually ordering it from ECM. And it's not surprising that ECM distributes their stuff - in some ways Supersilent 5 is more ECM than almost anything ECM has done ...

I'm staggered by the vastness of the Norwegian music scene. I'm half-Norwegian, and it's driving me nuts that my dad passed away and can't sit through all the weird crap I've been finding from our homeland, most of which he would probably hate.

Wow @ Henriksen's Cartography, might very well be my favorite record of the year. Anyone?

sounded great on first listening a few days ago, but will give it another spin later today

It's really, really great indeed. Must dig into it's 'theme' some more, which was easier with the evenly beautiful but much more esoteric Strjon, but I like how there's slightly more electronica trickling through. Also, David Sylvian reading his poetry is gorgeous.

tuesday's late junction is worth listening to if you like this stuff.
the sylvian track would be better ... as an instrumental.
― djh, Sunday, 16 November 2008 19:26 (fifteen years ago) link
At first listen I didn't really get into the Sylvian track either I must admit but most of it is really good. Henriksen's freaky talented and seems like a nice guy too, it's almost painful

ok so these guys got three (!!!) albums coming out this year. 10 and 11 looks to be out already and 12 coming soon. apparently 11 is a vinyl only release of outtakes from the 8 sessions, i'm very psyched for that one.

that is, these guys = Supersilent

Didn't know that this had happened - Supersilent with John Paul Jones!

What's the best post-Jarle Supersilent album? I lost track after the DVD release (which was 7 iirc)

9 was really good (all three of them improvising on Hammond organs; had a very early Tangerine Dream feel at times) and the most recent one, 14, is good too, with lots of short pieces.
― shared unit of analysis (unperson), Thursday, 25 April 2019 22:35 (five years ago) link
Short pieces sounds...interesting. I'll have to check that one out first. Thanks!
Really enjoyed the recent Ståle Storløkken / Thomas Stronen album as Humcrush and it made me think about the Supersilent albums I might have missed.

Very late to the party* I know, but it's 3:30 in the morning and 4 sounds perfect.
When I was doing college radio between 2007-2012 I must have heard 50-100 CDs from European bands that I would describe as forgettable variations on this sound (loose, jazzy drumming, abrupt electronic noises, amelodic skronk). Folks who were hip to this in the late 90s or thereabouts, Are these guys seen as particularly innovative or influential? I definitely knew the name Supersilent (and the packaging lol), I feel like they were always around and always respected.
*: Bizarrely, what drew me to them was my love of the 2019 Deathprod album, Occulting Disk
