The King of Detroit, people seem to like him on ILM, so let's leave the 80s and do a proper S&D session.

Search the dance floor. Destroy the records. ;-) Seriously, I prefer going to a dj set I never really understood why anyone would buy a dance record. Omar, do you sit in a chair listening to his records or do you dance to it?

Stevie Nixed, Wednesday, 30 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i've never really been into carl craig, everything i've heard is ok but never jumps out at you.

having said that, 69's Jam The Box is superb, although i think robert armani does the 'jam the box' sound better

gareth, Wednesday, 30 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Is he anything like Craig David? Because they both have 'Craig' in their name and last names that could be first names.

Maryann, Wednesday, 30 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Stevie, neither. I generally board my UFO, fly to Saturn, take loadsa acid and play dance records.

Search: Innerzone Orchestra - 'Programmed', all versions of 'At Les', that BFC/Psyche compilation (esp. 'Crackdown' and 'How the West was Won', as 69 'My Computers', 'Desire' and 'Rushed' (all on the 69 compilation), first half of the Paperclip People comp. (with 'Throw', 'the Climax' and 'Floor'), first half of 'Landcruising' album. Most of 'More Songs About Food and Revolutionary Art'.

Destroy: 2nd half of Landcruising. Never been too impressed with that 'God' remix.

Omar, Wednesday, 30 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

No, but he's a bit like Craig Charles, maryanne.

Nick, Wednesday, 30 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Omar, so you're implying they have turntables on Saturn, ey? ;-)

Stevie Nixed, Wednesday, 30 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Planet E just issued a most excellent 12" of "The Climax" (!) with a Basic Channel (!) remix on the B-side.

Andy, Wednesday, 30 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Not only implying, this is a well know fact. They also have the most beautiful girls on Saturn and the drugs?...pffff, really mindblowing :)

Nah, but to get to your question: the dancefloor comes first of course, then you chill out afterwards, then you wake up make a cup of tea a listen to say...Carl Craig! Most of his stuff (save 69 and Paperclip People) isn't really dancefloor orientated. Dance music of course also works very well riding your bike, or as background for cleaning your house or UFO.

Omar, Wednesday, 30 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Carl Craig - Search everything already mentioned, those tracks stand out, but the albums work as long-plays too. I can't say I'd listen to Landcruising all the way through at home, but on the road, that's a different matter. But the paperclip stuff, it's house, it's may not be aimed at the dancefloor, but that's a good place to find it. 'Breathe', it makes me ache if I stay sat down.
Also, should mention last year's Designer Music remixes (sure, he didn't write them), but reminded me of some forgotten gems, Problemz d'Amour - Alexander Robotnik and that 'Moscow/Disco' track by Telex, amongst others. I was always under the impression he'd sequenced the background strings on 'Strings of Life', is this true?
Maybe not a god, too playful, indulgent, not ruthless enough for my taste lately. But a 'prince'. You'll be fine on Omar's recommendations.

K-reg, Wednesday, 30 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I've never been that into his remix of Maurizio's Domina, which is the only thing I've really got by him.

Does anyone have a report from the DMF?

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 30 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

If anyone is genuinely interested in anything I write (which seems doubtful at this point), a short review can be found here:

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 30 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Tracer -- failed to visit the DEMF for the second year in a row, despite living a short drive from the location. Opinions from those I know/work with range from iffy to great. Closing night was a bit of a downer. Weather failed to cooperate (imagine that -- in Michigan), especially on the final night to the extent of forcing the fest to close down before May was able to do anything.

Apparently, the biggest disappointment performance-wise was Atkins. Mix was too slow and not without its technical difficulties. The worst glitch hit during "No UFOs," quite eerie since the fest was sponsored by the auto company that uses the track in its new marketing campaign. High point was the Inner City reunion -- no surprise there.

Everyone was in full support of Carl Craig, wearing stickers and such. As for all the drama surrounding the organization of the fest, well, that's another thread (many corporate sponsorships of the tacky variety -- not good). They really need to keep him on if the festival is to prosper.

Andy, Wednesday, 30 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Still thinking about this one. I just picked up Programmed a week or so ago, and haven't heard it much yet. It does strike me as a very inventive album (as in, it doesn't remind me much of other stuff I know well) but only a few tracks really grab me at this point. I'm not really down with whole concept, that kind of Burroughsian take on the future. And starting an album off with a minute-long answering machine track isn't such an inspired idea.

But okay, from that one album:

Search - "Blakula," holy shit, is this a great track. Weird & complex but groovy.

Destroy - "People Make The World Go Around." The only way I can stomach this is to pretend it's Ween doing a Tracy Chapman parody.

Mark, Wednesday, 30 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

jesus, this thread has gone up quick! only yesterday was i proclaiming the man as god, come back today and, well, i never realised he was so well known on here. apologies, this really is the most well-informed,interesting, broad-minded source of music writing i think i've ever found. anyway, enough of all that: carl craig- search and destroy. search: he's always been my top man , surpassed derrick may in the mid 90s i reckon,so there's a lot to search for, let's start with his involvement in 'strings of life'; he did the 1989 remix of it which is on a par with the original, it's on mastercuts house 2. as psyche look for 'elements'ep on transmat, this includes a may remix of 'neurotic behaviour' but the original is an abstract masterpiece. as BFC there's the ep with 'evolution'/'galaxy'/'static friendly' and'it's a shame' on fragile, all amazing, and 'chicken noodle soup'/'how the west was won'. the psyche/BFC tracks are compiled on the 'elements' lp released a few years ago. '4 jazz-funk classics'ep by 69 is one of the first releases on his own planet e label and includes the gob- smacking fucked-up techno funk 'ladies and gentlemen'. also 69 'desire', a deep as breakbeat track, and 'jam the box', which bangs, are paired on the 'sound on sound'ep on R+S. top paperclip people tracks are 'throw'/'remake', 'the climax', 'oscillator' and, perhaps my favourite '4 my peepz' a dark house classic. there's also the 'secret tapes of doctor eich' comp which collects most of these together (although not '4 my peepz'. on the remix front, i reckon both 'domina' and 'god' are fantastic but his job on incognito's 'out of the storm' beats the pair, more downbeat with a breakdown and kick- back-in to kill for. 'problemz d'amour' and 'moskow diskow' are warehouse techno par-excellance.you'll know 'bug in the bassbin' from the mo'wax remixes probably, a bit jazzy for me but the original is another story, a guitar-lick and a break looped to infinity. under his own name'at les' is stunning, and his two lps are excellent, especially the closing track 'home entertainment' on 'landcruising', his most beautiful, bittersweet 'song'. as for destroy; i'm at a loss, maybe 'programmed', i couldn't get it at all. sorry if i went on a bit, we all have our passions! ps. there's loads of japanese compilations knocking round, too.

michael wells, Thursday, 31 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Surpised a bit that Craig-heads (mmm, maybe not a good idea that ;) have doubts about 'Programmed'. I love that album so much. So many cool things going on: those blazing synth stabs in Eruption, that re- make of Galaxy with that simple "C'mon" and "Yeah" is so cool. And Manufactured Memories is my ultimate I Love Living in the City track (the dutch intro to that track is so surreal, talking about outer space, etc. in the most earth-bound language known to man).

That remix of Can's Future Days was pretty neat too.

Just curious: but wasn't Domina a remix of E2-E4? I read somewhere that Maurizio's remix was rejected at the time by Gottsching. True?

I didn't, but I spent all last week listening to his Just Another DayEP on Planet E, which is probably the best work he's ever released, IMHO. Everything about that record, from the dropping bombs on the cover to the steady 4/4 and nearly bursting minor-key synths on Sandstorms is just astounding. Definitely search this one.

Jena (JenaP), Friday, 9 December 2005 05:12 (eighteen years ago) link

hmm ... i think his best work is the "4mypeepz" ep

nice to see "sandstorms" is the hot techhouse comp track of the year (detroit division) ... up there w/ "safari" and "token mathew jonson track", anyway.

I like the new version of Landcruising so much that I might not ever listen to the original again. Craig went on a tear this year (the 12", Landcruising '05, the Theo Parrrish remix, the Fabric mix [which I unjustifiably slammed elsewhere]).

But yeah Just Another Day is beautiful, I could gave used an album full of that stuff.

Carl Craig really got back on track again this year. There's not only "Just Another Day" (what a great cover, simple and sad with these read bombs coming down). There's also the fantastic Remix he did of Terry Brookes & Aaron Souls: "City Life" on Rush Hour. And the stellar Remix of Theo Parrish's "Falling Up"! Beautiful stuff.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 9 December 2005 14:20 (eighteen years ago) link

ok, landcruising 95 vs 05 track-by-track breakdown

"mind of a machine" - the bass is much fatter on the new version, and it gets down to business much quicker (most of the new versions do). on the new disc, it maintains the pace instead of building tension. speaking of "the pace", it could definitely work as a slow tech-house stomper a la rob hood's "the pace". i sort of miss the electric guitar, but apart from that (and the thicker bass) he pretty much left it alone, although those crazy synth sweeps pop out quite a bit more.

"science fiction" - 95 version was the sound of the funky (909) drummer over the first stirrings of "at les" and echoes of "please stand by" and "ladies and gentlemen". great breakdown 2/3 of the way through and when it comes back ... those strings! the guitar!! it's like vangelis vs george duke!! this one is WAY different in the new version ... much more "techno". about 10 seconds in he drops the jetstream synth squelches all over the place, puts crazy phasing on the high-hats and snares and turns the bassline into a moroder-esque midrange percolator. here the breakdown isn't so much a breakdown as it is a sudden turn into extremely funky stripped-down groove territory. the new version KILLS the 95 version, as great as the early version was.

"a wonderful life" - well, you can't fuck with perfection. 95 version rules the school, ye fules, obviously. the new version is louder and has more stereo fx. it's also got more of a buildup, sort of climaxes where the first one starts. it's really heartbreaking, more poignant and dramatic, where the earlier version is just placid and beautiful ... i prefer the simplicity of the original but the new one's nice too.

so far 2/3 for the 95 version!!!

"technology" - funny, this time the drama synths are bigger in the original. in the new version, the synths seem a bit subtler, the beats are slightly tricked up and have more space to breathe. one for the 05 version, though the 95 is a close contender. it just makes more sense. four epics in a row is a bit suffocating - short and sweet is the order of the day on the new version and i think it makes sense (esp for a remix/remaster project where lots of consumers are already going to have the earlier version and in a post-p2p world where anybody can get an mp3 of the 95 versions...)

"they were" - the only track on the original that didn't really work for me. i just don't like pseudo-orchestral vibe all that much ... theo parrish and rob hood have both attempted stuff like this and it never works for me. the new version adds a bit of chatter to the drums and some new synth work. it still doesn't really work for me but at least takes the emphasis off those synth swoops and puts it on the chord progression and those great shivery 909 snares so it's much more listenable. also he adds a breakdown which gives that great wobbly bassline a moment to shine, when he overlays the martial snare on top it's a redeeming moment for the track. 05 version is a huge improvement.

"landcruising" - the old version is brilliant, but so short! the new version is almost twice as long and sounds much much better thanks to the remaster. that gorgeous sparkly starlit piano line comes floating out of the speakers in the new one and just floats in the air. totally magical remastering job.

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 11 December 2005 05:12 (eighteen years ago) link

"einbahn" - pretty much left as is. the drums and sound FX are foregrounded and the model 500 type synth line is pushed back a bit.

"one day soon" - ok, this version is INSANE. i forget how the original sounded in 97 when i first got my hands on "landcruising" but now it just sounds like whatever, kraftwerk-italo-eno nostalgia piece. the new version runs everything through that crazy fuzzy sucking-down-the-drain filter we first saw on urban tribe's album, adds fat bass explosions halfway through, and adds new strings to the end. gorgeous!

"home entertainment" - the first version is pretty similar to the original, just a bit more going on in the way of development and dynamics. the freestyle/electro feel in the beat is a bit more explicit in the new version. the "caya dub" is a beatless exercise in vainquer-type ebb-and-flow. oh yeah, there's also a remix of "technology" called "technoloambient" that explores similar territory.

the new track, "sparkle" steals synths from something else he did ... off the top of my head, i don't remember what ... it rides along on a paperclip-people type mellow house beat, cool mellow synths and some funky bongo beats. kind of like what you imagine a CC remix of 90s larry heard would sound like. nice stuff.

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 11 December 2005 05:26 (eighteen years ago) link

anyway it's good. i'm not sure if it totally replaces the older album, but it's a very different beast in places ... it's a bit less "techno" and more "downtempo", a little bit moodier and a lot louder. the weaker tracks from "landcruising" sound much better in their new versions and he certainly didn't fuck anything up w/ the timeless tracks.

has anyone heard the tom trago remix yet?
