Looking back, there were a number of songs that didn't typically fit in the format as we know it -- yet surprisingly found chart success on Modern Rock radio. Some of it is understandable for different reasons. Is this like the Eurodance we already play? (Right Said Fred, Ace of Base); Is rap ok if suburban kids like it? (Eminem, Outkast); Is this metal crossing over? (Guns n' Roses, Metallica); I.. have no explanation for Katy Perry other than the topic of the song?
I put some of the more noteworthy examples in the poll, but I'm sure there are others.
