Six declarations regarding "Wasted Youth"

--------------------------------

1) I don't care what anybody sez about Meatloaf's whole career, this album in general, or his fat corniness: I sincerely love the song.

2) It was on the first CD I ever bought.

3) I think Twyla Tharp & Meatloaf need to make a musical.

4) When I was 14 I used to sing along to Bat Outta Hell II in the woods behind my house.

5) Wasted youth? (Mine wasn't)

6) These are the lyrics:

I remember everything!
I remember every little thing, as if it happened yesterday
I was barely seventeen, and I once killed a boy with a fender guitar
I don’t remember if it was a telecaster or a stratocaster
But I do remember that it had a heart of chrome, and a voice like a horny angel
I don’t remember if it was a telecaster or a stratocaster
But I do remember that it wasn’t at all easy

It required the perfect combanation of the right power chords
And the percise angel from which to strike!

The guitar bled for about a week afterwords
And the blood was zoot, dark and rich, like wild berrys
The blood of the guitar was chuck berry red
The guitar bled for about a week afterwords
But it rung out beautifly
And I was able to play notes that I had never even heard before

So I took my guitar
And I smashed it aganist the wall
I smashed it aganist the floor
I smashed it aganist the body of a varisty cheerleader
Smashed it aganist the hood of a car
Smasned it aganist a 1981 harley-davaidson
The harley howled in pain
The guitar howled in heat

And I ran up the stairs to my parents bedroom
Mommy and daddy were sleeping in the moonlight
Slowly I opened the door
Creeping in the shadows right up to the foot of their bed
I raised the guitar high above my head
And just as I was about to bring the guitar crashing down upon the center of the bed
My father woke up, screaming stop!
Wait a minute. stop it boy. what do you think your doing?
That’s no way to treat an expensive musical instrument
And I said, God damn it daddy,
You know I love you, but you’ve got a hell of a lot to learn about rock n’ roll

I take it #2 is more OTT than #1?

(and more nonsensical?)

Yeah, that is a great song. I used to love meatloaf when I was a kid (In fact, I share my birthday with him, which means it was his birthday a week ago...Happy Birthday Meatloaf!), but can't stand him much these days, except for the odd song. This is one of them.

I'll look it up.

I heard it on the radio last night. I woke up, unable to sleep, spun around on the AM dial for a few minutes (not bothering to look at the stations) and heard this end to end. It's been stuck in my head all day.

This entire album is great.

Jim Steinman's 'Bad For Good' (upon which the above monologue - and a bunch of other songs which ended up on Bat Out Of Hell II as well - originally appeared.. tho it was called 'Love, Death and An American Guitar' then) is one of the greatest albums ever recorded (in my humble opinion.. which is actually worth sod all, but there you go)... Jim's got a slightly more manic delivery than Meat. especially on something like 'Out Of The Frying Pan'.

i'm gonna go listen to it right now.
