wait, what's the difference between record of the year and song of the year? Is there also a track of the year?

silverfish, Friday, 8 November 2024 17:57 (one month ago) link

Although "record" often refers to any recording of music, Record of the Year differs from Song of the Year or Album of the Year:

Record of the Year is awarded for a single or for one track from an album. This award goes to the performing artist, the producer, recording engineer and/or mixer for that song. In this sense, "record" means a particular recorded song, not i

ts composition or an album of songs.

Song of the Year is also awarded for a single or individual track, but the recipient of this award is the songwriter who actually wrote the lyrics and/or melodies to the song. "Song" in this context means the song as composed, not its recording.

In both cases, the accent marks signal pronunciation rather than emphasis.

André is a common French name, which uses an acute accent to denote that the letter is pronounced as "ay" instead of dropped or swallowed (as in "cadre"). Because the name is so common, nobody would actually be confused if the accent mark weren't there, but it is often retained nonetheless.

Similarly, the name Beyoncé uses an accent mark to indicate that it does not rhyme with "sconce."

Stereogum - Best New Artists
https://www.stereogum.com/2286447/best-new-artists-2024/lists/best-new-artists/

Best New Bands” of the preceding 12 months, Stereogum has evolved. Today, it is my unique honor to present the first edition of our Best New Artists list. It is exactly the same thing as the Best New Bands lists you know and love, just with a more accurate title.

For this project, the Stereogum staff evaluated our listening histories and the news and features we published since last fall to determine who we think are the best bands, singers, producers, rappers, and musicians to have emerged this year. As always, “new” is subjective; we prioritized artists who put out their debut full-length album this year, but that’s not a hard cutoff for eligibility. Maybe the artist has been around for a while but just signed to a label this year. Maybe they have a hefty Bandcamp catalog but their most recent project was a significant level up. Either way, we’re acknowledging artists who’ve made considerable strides and earned bigger spots on our radar over the past 12 months — sometimes it really all just comes down to vibes.

If you’re an avid Stereogum reader — first of all, thank you — a lot of these names should already ring a bell. We might’ve named them a Band To Watch. They might’ve earned themselves an Album Of The Week accolade. Stereogum might’ve even presented one of their concerts this year. The Best New Bands Artists list is not a year-end list. But our 2024 In Review package is just around the corner, so you’ll probably be seeing some of these names again soon enough.

And now we present you with Stereogum’s 40 Best New Artists Of 2024, listed in alphabetical order. Below that you’ll find playlists on Spotify and Apple Music highlighting the honorees. —Abby Jones

albumoftheyear has it's 2024 banner green because I suspect they expect BRAT to win AOTY but it's funny how none of the list counted so far have helped pushed it anywhere near the top 50.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 14 November 2024 03:26 (three weeks ago) link

From what I can gather it's going to be a fight to the top between The Cure and Charli XCX.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 14 November 2024 03:34 (three weeks ago) link

Charli XCX and Chapel Roan releasing the most beloved pop albums in such a stacked year for pop releases was not in my bingo card.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 14 November 2024 03:45 (three weeks ago) link

Wasn’t the Roan album from last year?

Grape Fired At Czar From Crack Battery (President Keyes), Thursday, 14 November 2024 04:15 (three weeks ago) link

yeah but "year of impact"

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 14 November 2024 04:39 (three weeks ago) link

A few ILM pop elite were definitely in on it last year and it made it to #56 on the top 77 albums list which disqualifies it from appearing this year but it would have very likely made it way higher if nommed this year. I still expect some songs to make it to the tracks poll this year.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 14 November 2024 04:45 (three weeks ago) link

But you're right, allow me to rephrase:

Charli XCX and Chapel Roan becoming the most beloved pop acts in such a stacked year for pop releases was not in my bingo card.

RA - The Best Tracks of 2024
https://ra.co/features/4401

The Best Tracks of 2024

This year's 25-strong list ranges from pearly downtempo to zany budots and souped-up dubstep. But who made #1?

Let's be honest: albums reigned supreme in 2024. The Ubiquitous Festival Anthem was in short supply—especially when you consider last year's rich bounty. As such, the list below follows a more gentle curve, with nods to ambient, R&B and oddball tunes from all around the globe. Dubstep and downtempo get a strong look-in; traditional house and techno, perhaps controversially, less so.

But that's not to say the list lacks dance floor heft—you only have to look as far as incendiary floor-fillers from the likes of 1OO1O, Thoughtforms and TAAHLIAH & Elouiza. And then there's our #1, which sits somewhere between the club and the beach party. It's also the second time this artist—on this occasion, in collaboration with one of our favourite vocalists—has clinched the top spot since 2022. They must be doing something right.

UK based Radio Station Radio X have published the worst 2024 EOY Best Albums list I have seen so far. Link provided for comedy:

The 25 best albums of 2024

Thankfully I have not listened to Radio X in 2024. Who is this wretched radio station catering for in 2024?

Geez, that is terrible - Kasabian, Kings of Leon, Bastille and Razorlight? Ugh.

Aiui, even Black Keys stans don't think much of that new album.

I didn't even scroll down far enough to see Snow Patrol and The Zutons. I guess there was a corner of the world where 2024 was the return of the landfill indie scene.

UK based Louder than War presents LOUDER THAN WAR TOP 100 ALBUMS OF 2024
https://louderthanwar.com/albums-of-2024/

AOTY format
https://www.albumoftheyear.org/list/2330-louder-than-wars-top-100-albums-of-2024/

Like last year the Louder than War list is a very mixed bag of the good, to the average and to bad. From complete unknowns that you never knew even existed, to random choices of heritage artists well past their peak, artists you had forgotten or never knew released albums in 2024, a few decent choices and some predictable selections.

I look at this list and it certainly doesn't represent my 2024. I expect the list doesn't make any sense to anyone outside of the contributors of the list. A cultural cul-de-sac of odd choices restricted to the confines of Louder than War.

Number 1 by the way was

1. Amyl & The Sniffers: Cartoon Darkness
(Rough Trade)

Mexico's Sound & Vision presents Los Mejores 50 Álbumes de 2024
https://svmusica.com/2024/12/03/los-mejores-50-albumes-de-2024/

translated

In such an intense and emotionally charged 2024 in music, everything essential has already been said in more analysis and detail about many of these releases throughout the year. It is enough to express to you that we were very excited to do this count, which, of course, is subject to our artistic vision, oriented to the sounds and rhythms that made us vibrate the most in the alternative universe.
Here you will find albums of all colors and flavors, very diverse regions of origin and different levels of impact. What they do have in common is that all these titles (and many more that unfortunately were left out) left an indelible mark in a year that we will not forget.

Number 2
She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She – Chelsea Wolfe

Number 1
Romance – Fontaines D.C.

Sean: your eoy lists are always a treasure trove. I’m halfway thru it and I’ve discovered such great music (Andre Either, La Force, Peggy Lee & Cole Schmidt, MOMO). Thanks so much for sharing your words and music taste. It is consistently one of the best eoy lists you can dig into and I’m always looking forward to them. Never stop doing them.

wow - voodoo, moka, sicko, thank you for taking a moment to say that. ILX remains one of the most important places for me to draw insights, inspiration and motivation throughout the year: i feel lucky to have the companionship of so many generous, curious fellow listeners. my StG tradition always feels like a lot of work but it's nice to (belatedly) be put into conversation with so many people who like to listen as i do.

I guess the Aquarium Drunkard list is behind the paywall this year.

Grape Fired At Czar From Crack Battery (President Keyes), Monday, 9 December 2024 20:22 (yesterday) link

Everything on Aquarium Drunkard has been behind the paywall since they went subscriber only earlier this year. I know at least one great person and killer writer for them posts here, and I get surviving in this day and age is rough for all media, so I won't complain too much. BUT $10/month is A LOT and it really stings to not be able to read their yearly wrap up this year, because they are usually really excellent. Was kinda hoping they might put that one outside the paywall for a few weeks or something but, hey, I guess this subscriber only model is working out!
