Slightly off-topic but... the indie nightclub I used to attend regularly back in the day always played "Dancing Queen" at the end of the night and to this day hearing it inspires PTSD at the memories of scrambling to get out of the place before the horror of the lights being turned on.

For most of this year, the last song of the night when I’m playing out on Fridays has been UB40: Kingston Town. Some regulars requested it, and it just stuck, because it works. I barely remember it from when it was a hit.

To be fair, I can't really claim credit here - I first heard a DJ close with this at 6am at a docklands party somewhere in Denmark 25 years ago, and it was perfect: first of all, literally everyone knows and loves this song, but it's also laidback but still danceable, and the lyrics reference the sun coming up and the morning dew and "we gotta go" etc. So I've shamelessly stolen it for whenever I play a last set myself (which tbh isn't very often anymore).

This song mentions 'the small hours', but that's just a coincidence. For me, it has the right blend of melancholy and uplift for this brief.

I had to choose a track to get people off the floor and to other places and weirdly picked “You Gotta Be” (Des’ree) and I have never seen a dance floor fill up so quickly

I was definitely thinking more "You've got home. You have carried on drinking. You should stop but, oh, one more small glass of red and the perfect tune" rather than encourage people to go ... but obviously there's some crossover.
