Thunk I'd ask like

First thing I listened to on waking up this morning was this //e.snmc.io/i/300/w/a0feb3d0bca512870b5533074c490ef8/2485162
which elsewhere looks like this //e.snmc.io/i/300/w/21a5d838f7a87e1be8cc2aebd6a536a3/3608495and sounds like a bunch of middle class youth discovering how heavy one could set its distortion at the turn of the 70s. It does rock but I don't think I would ideally pick that vocalist cos I think he reflects his background but this is decent garagey heavy rock with corrosive distortion.I think I picked it up in Minus Zero in the mid 90s and hadn't played it in ages. But it is pretty great.
sorted through a pile of cds I hadn't looked through for a while andd found several essential titles including this //e.snmc.io/i/300/w/bced72bca65398d201167c3794256ba3/1234393which I have in a bootleg version from before the band themselves released a remastered version.Heavy rock that sounds like a heavier take on The Doors with a street preacher/street person expanding on Morrison. The guitarist is heavier than Kreiger and there is an u8nderkying Xian message though I think it can be overlooked. The singer's manic vocal is pretty great though.I have thought about picking up the remaster but never got around to it.
//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/0a43d383e764f66ec0af5c6eb5ce24cd/2365741Finnish heavy prog/psych. Quite heavy. I just got this after spending some time perusing a couple of lists of heavy psych/hard rock that had been written on headheritage a couple of decades vback and one I'd been sent elsewhere https://www.headheritage.co.uk/headtohead/unsung/topic/30590/threaded/381991andhttps://www.headheritage.co.uk/headtohead/unsung/topic/5500/threaded/45556which both have some seriously great stuff on.I was able to find tracks from a load of the lps I still didn't have up on Spotify. This sounded very interesting so I grabbed a copy. It arrived on Friday.Great guitar and band interplay. May take a while for the singer to grow on me. Reminds me of Brian Blesse4
//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/d6758698d9bcff04fab06a5ed71ab2c7/5370820 //e.snmc.io/i/300/w/d6758698d9bcff04fab06a5ed71ab2c7/5370820ery heavy, pretty late heavy psych lp dating from 1976. I thought this was considered a Stoner Rock classic which contributed to me buying it fromn Rockadrome when they reissued it in the late 00ies.It's been sitting in a piule neglected for an age.I started spinning it again recently and its really growing on me.
//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/dcb40301f7002b382fadd498fb7c8b3c/2312991Manchester band signed to John Peel's Dandelion label. Brutal thuggish reworkings of a number of blues asnd psych rock numbers and some original material which always stood out to me. I picked this up in a Dublin HMV sale in the early 90s and played bits of it regularly on my radio show, think I'd seen a review in Forcedexposure or something.Have meant to get the cd box set of all of their work.
//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/758968e2e62a294d7df63d02ce804759/9400569 very funky free jazz lp which I'd meant to pick up for a while. I picked up a copy in Honest John's late last year then put it back in the racks for some reason. Picked up a Sun |Ra compilation thing instead got back here and wondered why I had missed getting it. So wound up listening through it on spotify and going duh what'd you do. So got it through Spotify and may have wound up with a better version the Corbett vs. Dempsey one. Not sure if that was the one I'd initially rejected, sleeve doesn't seem to mention bonus tracks but this about doubles its length in cover versions.Pretty essential.
also been lkistening to a load of jazz I picked up from charity shops and seems to have a leaning to early eras 30s & 40s and a few artists from then's later work. So much great stuff here. I'm now reading Ted Giotta's history of Jazz which is helping place some of this, though I do have some understanding.also a load of classical stuff I'm picking up from the same charity shops. Classical is an area I really haven't spent a great deal of time listening to. Though have intermittently tuned into classical radio at different points.
mot sure what else extremely left field has turned up . Bound to be some stuff, various folk and stuff.Mainly listening to podcasts on spotify and therefore the phone as walkman interspersed with tracks a lot of which come from the lists I mentioned.

//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/7479547e44b47590f6ef0fa585a28c8f/1883438German teen heavies 1st lp.I'm listening to a lot of early 70s heavy material at the moment. This arrived yesterday and is pretty great. I think I need a better music player to hear things properly though. This is the Lumpy Gravy version, not sure how it compares to the previous cd.But been meaning to pick this up for ages so glad I finally did get a copy.
//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/8ea1794fa2f4cf68f46baeb3845a5940/13679231st lp by international heavy quartet. The rhythm section had been used by Brainticket on their lp Cottonwoodhill which is also the title of a track here.Great very heavy psychedelic rock. Again been meaning to get this for years. Now need Tomorrow Blue

Eno treating the rest of the band's instruments and creating dubbed out epics. Manzanera getting quite heavy in places.
//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/eb5a9e5143d9fe7632648459725303ed/2995370superheavy German trio. Get very abstract in places. Refound my copy this week. Should be much more familiar with it.
//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/0221405fe1efdc002ab4b2ed1779ef8f/1740286German psych which I guess is krautrock. It gets very noisy in places. 1st track seems a bit corny lyrically, maybe overtly English as 2nd language. But music on that gets really out too.
//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/a37083a4e26bd26bd40f5ee355ed5f99/23233311976 set which gets pretty out.Couldn't find this recently so glad I finally have done. Found a load of titles while looking for Silberbart.I think this was one of the first sets I heard by the band cos my brother had a copy of the vinyl. I remembered it as being heavily drum dominated which seems less true on the cd I listened to.
//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/0735b2e2f9d5603d59f6d218dbad931d/10464158The Grapefruit label set devoted to the Ladbroke Grove/Portobello scene. Wish I'd been more aware of the music being made around me when I was there, which was at the start but also my start.Got some great stuff on as always. I'm also reading Andrew Lauder's book Happy Trails which overlaps.

//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/7f71b7577367371ce514c43456dad337/2567576Heavy prog from Germany. Got some scorching leads and keyboard. Pretty psychedelic. Have been aware of the existence of this since the early 00ies when it cropped up on mp3 blogs but only just got hold of a physical copy.So only heard it through a couple of times so far. But will be listening to it a lot more. Going through a heavy stoner hard rock phase so picking up a bunch of stuff I've been aware of for a while but not got around to getting.
//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/898df71bb7ae0bb72f777e4ca11e21e2/1831174Turkish heavy Anadolu rock trio combining trad influences with electric rock in a heavy psychedelic way. Some great snaking lead lines.I was trying to work out earlier if the theme to their s/t track was borrowed from somewhere else, sounds familiar.Have had this for a few years but neglected it for a while so getting back into it.Maybe not quite as heavy as it could be but think it's pretty good.
//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/28db254b9afd66f4f9eed449e0caf21b/35915072cd compilation of 20s blues chanteuse cheap but with pretty decent sound.I grabbed this last week after it wasn't around locally for several months. I got a different compi of her last year, I think while I was reading her biography and had wanted to get this so did next time I saw it.Janis Joplin bought her grave a headstone at the turn of the 70s and I think she was popular with the current hippy underground as a number of other reissues from the time were. This shares a cover image with a compilation that was released in 1970 and I think sold pretty well. Her blues is played with a jazz combo so is a bit different to the delta blues that I think a lot of people associate prewar blues with. In Delta blues you normally have a solo performer accompanying themselves with a portable instrument like a guitar. It has been interesting to note that this music which has partially been portrayed more recently in terms of legacy going back to time immemorial actually seemed to be pretty new when it was being introduced in the early 20th century. The guitar as popular instrument ties in with the popularisation of the Sears catalogue, mail order and instalment payments. Which does also tie in with older traditions but new technology morphs the way that music is performed and also how it is heard. Like the fact that it is recorded for posterity was only a couple of decades old at the time. Commercial criteria narrowed what was being recorded all too soon and introduced formulae as well as excluded things it deemed outside of what was wanted to sell or represent the type of music to be recorded.Sonow you have a load of older music coming out of copyright and some firms are doing their best to make it sound listenable on current technology. This is Not Now who do seem to be coming out with good audio. I'm enjoying this.

His own playing is pretty interesting so I've wanted to get some for a while. This does seem to avoid overt schmaltz in what I've heard so far. It's certainly way more MOR than avant but this is a handy 3cd to have I think.
//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/18223dbf64d215dfed544b526833e547/10922427and //e.snmc.io/i/300/w/d6fa6d52e6657f37ec2ff04188fc5046/10432276First 2 lps by the band that morphed out of Timebox and took its name from the lead singer. Featuring the very dextrous guitar of Ollie Halsall who had only been playing guitar for a couple of years by this point. He had played vibraphone beforehand which he does in some places here. Wondering if his conception coming from another instrument impacted his playing on guitar, it's quite great anyway.Pretty blues based with a heavy jazz influence. So maybe like a more jazzed out Zep anyway recommended bband.

I think I only found 66 Breakout last week while going through piles of things. The Total Energy label was run by John Sinclair I think or at least heavily involved him. So they released a load of previously unreleased material some of which has been reissued since and some hasn't.These 2 are great anyway.
//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/6070c59725a00433c82ce6ec9fc47116/7250389Heavy folk rock from Chicago with female vocals.Production has a lot of space in it. Guitar is very heavy and distorted in places.Lengthy version of Train Kept A Rollin is sung by someone with no knowledge of the lyrics. So has complete mumbled nonsense being sung, not sure what to think of that, positive or negative? Garage innit?
//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/66e9081b6686e376c3ac24efcc103fcb/17213092nd lp from early 70s twin guitar band.I rediscovered the band recently. Love the first couple of lps and the live in Memphis mini lp which takes its tracks from this lp and extends them. I don't love the vocals on Argus so not listened to that in an age. They had a lot of promise early on. 1st s/t lp has them taking off in an impactful hard rock direction, this takes off in a more folky jazzier direction with some psychedelic influences. Argus has some guitar interplay that sounds like a more mature take on the ballroom sound but I find the vocals really bland. Not sure what the best releases of this set are. Have heard it was remastered and overcompressed a few years ago. Think it's a great lp anyway.

i've been listening to this Rie Nakajima release a bunch:https://rienakajima.bandcamp.com/album/four-forms
it's very well mixed and sounds amazing in headphones, quite ASMR-ish. she's maybe the most compelling voice doing this kind of found objects/ kinetics sound stuff rn... anne-f jacques is also really great.
also i haven't heard any other jazz that prominently features the celesta, which is a terrible shame because it sounds like this:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyk4GtvBhZo

I wish it hadn't taken me so long to get around to this. This is like the platonic ideal of an early '80s punk album for me, not just variations of the same song hammered over and over, a pretty good mix of hardcore intensity, melodicism and even things like a synth intro!

//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/048ef0d7791e653ef708f8c27a09b52d/9783027compilation of material by New Orleans r'n'b guitarist/singer. Incorporates what I take to be 2nd line rhythms into his style which adds an element I don't hear in contemporary r'n'b from elsewhere.I picked this up without being familiar with the artist but am very glad I did so. 2nd hand book/music shop I got it from recently bought up collections from a couple of people who'd collected a load of blues/r'n'b/various roots musics, so I picked up bits of those collections but not really as much as I would have if I had more money on me. Oh well chance element is always interesting. & thanks to a friend for pointing out that the cd I was looking at because it was on Acrobat which a Jesse Fuller set I was actually consciously looking to pick up after not doing so on a previous visit. Jesse Fuller was an artist a guitarist around town had covered a lot when I first got here.Anyway, one of the best buys I've made in a while cos it is pretty great.
//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/d8583e65056501991a572670170f4671/644265470s blues plus plus group incorporating some 2nd line, country, jazz and a myriad of other influences. Band leader Lowell George had tiny tootsies and great skill with slide guitar which seems to be a feature throughout. Can give some of this music a really psychedelic feel that and the flowing rhythms.I've been meaning to pick this up for a while but its taken a few months to restock and I didn't grab it last time it was in. So been going in to check if its there and surprise surprise it turns up when I'm feeling broke. But got it anyway and glad I did. Have only had ther 1st s/t lp up til now. Not sure how I managed to get to this point without picking up more.
//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/32f01ea62595e8d1ea9487c4b8554249/6099222compilation of old-timey Appalachian banjo player's recordings from the late 20s and early 30s.I think this came from one of the mainly blues collections I mentioned earlier. Macon is an artist I'm semi familiar with from reading about early country in books like Tony Russell's Country Music Originals.Pretty raucous party music I guess. Love this stuff. also picked up the Rough Guide to Hillbilly Blues a couple of weeks back. Early country reminds me of the Gun Club, other roots punk and things like Dylan's early acoustic years and the Charlatans since they all contributed to me investigating it. & then I've been slowly picking up bits and pieces for years.
//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/8588acf7e0436b8a26447235c69bbfab/5709756Welsh heavy trio playing a stoner heavy hard rock before the genre became fully formulaically defined. I have a copy of this on cd that I need to find that I think came out on a hip hop label. So far this is the only one of their lps I have but have heard first 5 lps are great. I'm having to listen to this one track at a time on Spotify so really should find my physical copy. There are some pretty odd titles on the record with more prosaic lyrical themes. But Nude Disintegrating Parachutist Woman doesn't get a further explanation.
//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/9a44fea8f1703cee792bee6e8d5ea015/4891392psychedelic hip hop stuff that I really need to get a physical copy of. I think I was turned onto it by comparisons made from the New Kingdom lps years ago. So not having it yet may be a bit lax, pretty great

That Pacific Northwest 3cd is pretty good too, does go into '74 too. I remember really liking the '73 set from Jerry's birthday on the 1st of August. I remember noting a soul influence on it. But do like most of the 72-74 stuff I've heard apart from the period in 73 when they incorporated horns. & not listened to any of that in an age so may be more tolerant of it.
Uncle Dave Macon is great as is that Tony Russell Original Country Classics book.

//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/4a8d57131949e51e6ff1fd56247d34a6/1893894Breakthrough lp of early 90s Californian desert rock band. It sounds like they listened heavily to a load of music from the early 70s and tied it in with more recent metal/hardcore moves. So I hear echoes of music I know elsewhere running through it. So I can't buy into the more recent purist stoner rock was invented in 1990 in California line when it actually seems to be a reinvestigation of earlierinfluences. This is done with a great deal of power and coherence which I think are the signs of success when listening to a band blending a number of influences. Which is hopefully true of any band worth hearing.I just got a new copy of this at the weekend. I got heavily into listening to the band about 20 years ago which was several years after the fact. Think I could have seen them live, knew somebody at the time they were around who got into them quite heavily. But I didn't pick up on them for a few years and have since left my copies of their cds unplayed for several years while enjoying the bands I hear them echoing.I'm not sure to what degree the band denying interest in the bands they were compared to is true and how much was petulant contrariness. I think several players here went on to cover late 60s/early 70s hard stoner rock in spinoff bands and I don't think I buy into this being Black Flag meets the Smiths 2 bands that I think Josh Homme admitted to liking. Black Flag at the time of My War the lp he does cite listening to were picking up on influence from Sabbath, Detroit Rock etc and Rollins when he went solo covered things from Ladbroke Grove Underground bands.I thought UK indie was picking up on a lot of mid to late 60s influences and a lot of reissues from that era were coming out. Seemed to be more concentration on later material being reissued when I had been more aware of the mid 60s mod and garage rock being reissued in my teens.Though that could be where my focus lay. Grunge had meant some focus on bands like Blue Cheer, MC5, the Stooges and other Detroit rock aspart of the blend that made up the sound of the better bands. So 1990 was pretty far from a vacuum without these influences anyway. So thinking there was a year zero at that point strikes me as deeply misguided.I like tracing influences back rather than just setting up arbitrary barriers. & tracing things backwards has lead me to some great finds.
//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/3b06366e2232b89d71dcce71484bc06d/8297051Australian very heavy psychedelic rock from 1973. This was their 2nd lp and the band had lost a vocalist since their first one which took them down to a single singer. When I first heard this in the early 00ies it was from files on an MP3 site and I was reminded of a more fluid Swans. This is archetypal stoner rock and seems to have had textures and structure borrowed widely and heavily. There is a great cd version out on Aztec records which I picked up somewhere around 15 years ago. It did lie on a shelf neglected for a few years but I'd reccommend it to anybody into this area of music.I'm not sure I would picture them as looking like this from listening to the music but they, like, rock.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYh85aIbJHEI'm not sure if their track Shylock is exactly PC which is a shame cos its got great dynamics.
//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/29cae1e4179e3286177b6ba7b776f4a9/6879199UK band captured live in NYC on a US tour. They are in their psychedelic era still, rocking pretty hard, stretching out in places. These places include an extended Relax and a 1/2 hour My Generation. They also include a lot of rock'n'roll covers for a mod band.Pretty good set that I'd meant to pick up for years.
//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/96093b956411cf963955adc88023c23e/5837187Irish band's breakthrough set from the Isle of Wight in 1970. Based in blues rock but quite expansive in terms of influences and prone to long exploratory improvisations.Rory Gallagher is best known for blues I think but at places his playing can get very angular which gives it a rather distinctive taste. This is the expanded version of the set that was released 9 years ago after a much shorter version had been released on vinyl in the early 70s.Songs tend to be heavily extended by exploratory jams which remain vital throughout.
//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/06b89cef8444e9d80831c868d12e65f6/1460969Scunthorpe heavy psych meets gospel band with some pretty great guitar.I don't think this is quite as good as I'd read but the guitar is pretty fine. Material can get a bit cheesy otherwise. Starts with songs with weird takes on the gospels of the new testament and a bit of a country tinge. It may grow on me. I do definitely enjoy the guitar.Band members went onto the folk band Amazing Blondel when this group dissolved.
otherwise various blues, greek soundtrack, jazz etc etc. I picked up what appears to be a bit of a tourist compilation of Greek music by Theodarakis, Markopoulos, Hadjikaidis among others that I'm enjoying . Always did love those like descending runs of chiming balalaikas that you get in these things. So that was a great charity shop find.
