all contextual reasons are valid. music doesnt exist in a vacuum

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 1 December 2002 19:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh thanks for derailing my thread there. There ARE stupid reasons for disliking music and you know it (i.e. "the band has too many of those ethnic people")

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Sunday, 1 December 2002 19:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

Search: Never hearing the band, reading alot about them, hearing mates talk about them, never buying their record and then hating them because you never liked them early enough.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 1 December 2002 19:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

Destroy: probably if you say, without any further explanation or distinction, a band or singer has 'offensive lyrics' (as opposed to thinking the lyrics just suck, if you like) -- that only flies if none of the bands you like have offensive lyrics, I'd guess.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 1 December 2002 19:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

destroy: you don't like the band's crappy name (see audioslave thread)

S: max weinberg plays drums.

D: the band is not famous.

destroy: the artist's politics are questionable.

angelo (angelo), Sunday, 1 December 2002 22:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ned, but as long as we're only talking like vs. dislike, (not good vs. bad) the only person that has to be offended is yourself, no? I think a person would already have a pretty good idea about why something does or does not offend them, why do they have to justify their offence to anyone else?

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 1 December 2002 22:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

S: the band is crap but the SINGER'S ASS IS ASTONISHING.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Sunday, 1 December 2002 23:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

I wasn't trying to be hard and fast with my suggestion, thus its rather conditional nature. Strikes me, though, that complaining about a lyrical focus on sex/drugs/etc. in one performer while tolerating it in another -- or not even consciously acknowledging it at all -- is evasive. If you're going to bring it up as a reason -- or especially the reason -- to dislike something, I figure you either have to justify it all down the line or else have a very ready and convincing argument for why other artists working similar grounds get the okay from you. It's just something I've noticed over many years' time that can crop up -- might be one reason why I don't consciously listen for lyrics, I dunno.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 1 December 2002 23:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ned, I've brought this up elsewhere, but how much you wanna bet that half the crits who decry Eminem's lyrics are big fans of the Sex Pistols?

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Sunday, 1 December 2002 23:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

I suppose I can see it that way Ned. I tend to trust my gut on these things though - I mean, I either get that over-riding icky feeling or I don't. If there are cases where I've somehow been able to get past the ugliness (or just not notice it at all) then it's only a good thing - almost luck. That's maybe the same thing as hypocrisy, but I'm not convinced of it.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 1 December 2002 23:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

Dumb fans of same, clearly. Such is the reason I'm so turned off by, oh say, so much Hip Hop, Rap-Rock/Nu-Metal, teen pop, etc.

Search: you hear a few songs, they're not that bad, maybe a bit catchy, then you hear/read/watch an interview with the band/prominent member and they are such an incredible tool you can never really hear the music again without thinking about what a supreme asshole is playing it.
