The easiest one yet: "Wayside"

Les hommes de bonbons (cryptosicko), Monday, 14 November 2022 17:02 (two weeks ago) link

wow I only know four of these

Had this CD. A bunch of classics but easy for me, Shake Some Action. Has that call to arms feeling.

dan selzer, Monday, 14 November 2022 17:14 (two weeks ago) link

I only know three, and I love this kinda stuff. Gonna give a listen to the whole thing today.

Three Rings for the Elven Bishop (Dan Peterson), Monday, 14 November 2022 17:16 (two weeks ago) link

I've heard like 4 of these but "Shake Some Action" is one of the greatest records ever released so...

Fronted by a bearded Phil Collins (Tom D.), Monday, 14 November 2022 17:24 (two weeks ago) link

Yeah, I'll have to listen through these - but it's hard to imagine anything beating "Shake"

Reese's Pisces Iscariot (morrisp), Monday, 14 November 2022 17:44 (two weeks ago) link

I was thinking "Shake Some Action" would be an easy choice but then I saw the Real Kids.

nickn, Monday, 14 November 2022 17:46 (two weeks ago) link

love these:

Shake Some Action - Flamin' Groovies
Hanging On the Telephone - The Nerves
Southern Girls - Cheap Trick
All Kindsa Girls - The Real Kids
Tired of Waking Up Tired - The Diodes
I Am the Cosmos - Chris Bell

like these but like other songs by those bands better:

Baby It's Cold Outside - Pezband
Wayside - Artful Dodger
Stop! Wait a Minute - Pezband
When You Find Out - The Nerves
The Summer Sun - Chris Stamey

it is hard to beat Shake Some Action though

^this last

Impossible to vote for anything other than "Shake Some Action." (Not my absolute #1 power-pop song ever, but whatever I like better tends to be obscure: songs by Fudge, the James Dean Experience, etc.) "Southern Girls" is close, and I also love the Diodes.

clemenza, Monday, 14 November 2022 18:56 (two weeks ago) link

Also like the Nerves, Chris Stamey, and Chris Bell songs.

clemenza, Monday, 14 November 2022 18:57 (two weeks ago) link

Okay, I listened to all of them. As a musician who struggles with backing vocals, some of the backing harmonies on these are wonderful.

Poll seems impossibly weighted toward "Shake Some Action" though.

Love Artful Dodger but no denying 'Shake Some Action' here.

Piper features my old childhood favorite Billy Squier but the song never made an impact on me.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 15 November 2022 00:09 (two weeks ago) link

Billy Squier was the first musician I got into, when I was 10 or 11. I always saw those Piper records at the record store, and figured they were some kind of proto-hair-metal. Would have never guessed he started out in a power pop band, but it really works.

Somehow I never heard "Shake Some Action" before. It was actually a bit of a letdown after all the buildup it got upthread. The intro and ending are great, but the chorus just seems to squander all that potential.

enochroot, Tuesday, 15 November 2022 13:36 (two weeks ago) link

I kinda understand that. It’s a little overlong, and it’s subtle. There’s no explosive chorus. I hadn’t heard it or “Baby It’s Cold Outside” for years, and relistening yesterday it was the latter song that got my power pop juices flowing.

Three Rings for the Elven Bishop (Dan Peterson), Tuesday, 15 November 2022 14:31 (two weeks ago) link

Went with Chris Bell simply because I've played that track many more times than the others.

birdistheword, Tuesday, 15 November 2022 14:33 (two weeks ago) link

xp the musical understatement of the Groovies' track works for me because it reinforces the lyrical tension: action is lacking, will you help me shake some?

OTM

Me and the Major on the Moon (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 15 November 2022 15:07 (two weeks ago) link

Is that the same “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” as by Wally Bryson’s group The Choir?

Me and the Major on the Moon (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 15 November 2022 15:08 (two weeks ago) link

Ha, no, that one is just “It’s Cold Outside.”

Me and the Major on the Moon (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 15 November 2022 15:10 (two weeks ago) link

I heard Cracker’s version of “Shake…” first (in Clueless), which is more rockin’ / less subtle. It’s a good cover, IMO

Reese's Pisces Iscariot (morrisp), Tuesday, 15 November 2022 15:10 (two weeks ago) link

Guess I will have to settle for getting my Wally Bryson content from Fotomaker.

I had heard zero of these, and I consider myself a power pop fan. I guess my membership card will be revoked. Looking forward to listening through this list.

voted artful dodger. but i sort of think the real kids tune might be the best here.

this CD comp was pretty influential for my taste in this music, even if i now think the nerves tune to beat is "working too hard"; and chris bell, "i got kinda lost"

budo jeru, Friday, 18 November 2022 02:20 (two weeks ago) link

I only knew 2 of these prior to the poll, but this might be my favorite from the collection in this series so far (certainly the most revelatory).
Voted Fotomaker.
